Grass seed will germinate when on top of the soil. Remember the 3 keys to success for growing grass from seed: heat, moisture and seed to soil contact. As long as the seed is touching the soil, the root will dig down and the grass blade will sprout up. So when spring rolls around, throw down that seed.

Nice to see this video. I just remembered why I cant just throw seeds on top... Any rain will wash them away and I wonder if dethatching will tear them up easier in future?

Hey WeatherNut, dethatching might allow the seeds to better get down to the soil. For rain run off I'd either core aerate so that the seed is captured in those holes or put some type of covering or seed blanket on.

Germination should be less with seeds on top vs mixed. And, Some seeds will germinate weeks or a year later, so take the lazy way out and throw more seed in the grass

Thanks. If you want the seeds to stay put and not worry about outside factors, then bury it. otherwise there's nothing wrong with throwing some seed in the grass.
