One of my girl friends gifted me with two plants, and it’s so hot and humid here, I’ve had them in planters. I am encouraged to see how well it grows in containers. Thank you!

I ordered some seeds last year because I liked the description. Had never heard of them at that point. I started 4 plants from seeds. It took about 2 weeks to germinate. Now I am waiting for them to get big enough and after the last frost to put in pots. I am in zone 7 (Maryland). I know to be careful as to where I plant them since the seeds fall to the ground and the ground cherries will come back next year. Thank you for this informative video.

I grow ground cherries twice a year here in Northeast TX. Ground cherries drop their berries as they close ripeness, hence the name ground cherry. The plants should be darker in green color. Nutrition is really lacking on this plant. The berries are smaller for that reason as well. I'm always open to give tips if you like. Happy Gardening!

I can definitely use some tips. I posted this above but I'll post it again to you. The leaves on my pineapple ground cherry are completely white. Even the new leaves are white. I thought it was a mildew problem so I sprayed neem oil and it's not going away. There's plenty of flowers on the bottom but they just die. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

@@carmelwine7610 I grew some for the first time in a pot and loved them so much I picked and ate them from the plant. I hope this year I can grow enough to try some recipes. I can’t remember when I planted them. they were from what was called, “golden berries” I purchased at Trader Joe’s. I was surprised they grew but they fruited all through the winter and still have fruits. Now, they are getting new blossoms. I am in Southern California and we had the most unusual, rainy, cold winter, compared to recent years. My friend had given me a bunch of boxes from blue apron. The boxes also came with the foil liner which keeps the food cold, so I put one underneath the pot and one surrounding the pot and just kept other plants close to it on my balcony. I still can’t believe they grew all winter. I did something similar with cherry tomatoes. I stuck the pot more than halfway down into my compost pile, and on the nights when it got really cold, I put a foil bag over it. I didn’t have tomatoes, but the plant is doing very well and has lots of blossoms now.

@@justbeachy2031 That’s great to hear that they grew through the winter. I would love that. I planted seeds this year that haven’t come up yet it’s still cold. I’ve seen golden berries at Trader Joe’s but I haven’t tried them. I’m happy to be growing my own again this year. Hopefully we’ll both have a big harvest this year. I can feel a difference when I did eat them and I find that amazing!

A lot of people call this plant the Ground Cherry but it's actually the Cape Gooseberry plant. The Ground Cherry gets its name because it grows close to the ground, NOT because they fall to the ground when they are ripe. In the 2nd half of the following video a farmer shows you the differences in the 2 plants... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4xEpGqOVL4U.html

Northern Thai Garden Guy Good. Let me know how it goes. Remember to slightly shade the young plants until strong enough. My plants/dropped fruit was planted under a fig tree and did well on a balcony that only received about 4 hours of afternoon sunlight on sunny days. Although they should grow well in direct sunlight as long as their adequately watered if your growing them in containers.

If you don't want to add any fertilizer youd need to put alot of nitrogen aource un there when planting. Like maybe put a sardine in there . This plant is starting to struggle with yellow leaves which means doesn't have alot nitrogen..potting mix always needs epsom salt, lime & micro nutrients.I wonder if you can trellis this like with cucumbers or squash.

@carmelwine this is a great video. I just realized that these fresh groundcherries are the same superfood dried golden berries are the same thing! And even more excited that it doesn't have to come from a tropical place and I can grow them here in South Jersey! My church friend has a farm stand at a Saturday market and she let me try these little gems along with her cherry tomatoes and loved peeling back the papery calyx to eat them. When I went home is when I looked up the health benefits and the rest is history. I wonder if I can grow them indoors during the winter or should I wait until Spring to plant them outdoors in my raised garden bed or a pot like you did. Do you have Instagram? I am on there and just put a picture and video about them there.😊👍🏼Happy gardening.
@carmelwine7610
@carmelwine7610 6 лет назад
Thanks for the compliment Susan! That's right they do not have to come from a tropical place I've grown them in zone 7A & 7B. The health benefits are great as just eating a few I definitely feel a boost in my well being within minutes. Since your in Jersey I would wait until 8 weeks before spring and start the seedlings in a greenhouse/window type of set up. Sorry I don't have a Instagram page but I would love to see your picture/video. Happy gardening to you too!
