Growing Hardy Kiwis: Kiwi Berry Spring Update: Flowers + BABY FRUIT!

Hardy kiwis are the smaller, smooth-skinned cousin of the fuzzy kiwi commonly available in the grocery store. For most of us, hardy kiwi fruit are only available if we grow them ourselves.
My kiwi vines are loaded with flowers and baby fruit, so now is a good time to look at the growth habit, how kiwi set fruit, and what kiwi vines and fruit look like in summer.

I used to live next door to the owner of a fuzzy kiwi. The fruit wouldn't ripen until late November, which meant it was usually trying to ripen its frost damaged fruit. In the 10 years I lived there, they only had one year where the fruit ripened before the first frost. Hardy Kiwi is much better.

I literally planted some of these yesterday along my fence. I am both super excited about this fruit and terrified of the vigor. I thought about it for a while and have previous fought back autumn clematis along that fence - I decided that I would prefer to have a crop and lots of pruning than no crop and lots of pruning.

I bought a hardy kiwi prolific plant two weeks ago. I didn't know that they need male plant too. Thank you for your video. I will buy a male plant too. I love kiwi. But recently the kiwis we usually buy from Costco or Walmart, its never ripe and its stay very hard like a rock. I don't buy kiwis anymore. Thank you a wonderful video.

Thanks for this video, this definitely helped me decide kiwi vines are not right for my garden! Too bad though, because they sound amazing!

This is so helpful to know. Pruning info on kiwi--ooo look at all that green chop and drop energy waiting to be added to the garden. I consider my chain link or cyclone fence one of the best trellis ideas I could have installed. It gives my yard a bit of security, still allows light and wind to circulate and opens up my yard to even more vining plants. As the vines mature, I get a bit of privacy, create places for birds and pollinators to live. shelter find food and slow some of the raccoon traffic. (the raccoons seem to prefer bare wire and wood fences). I can grow annual food vines, or perennial flower vines or wonderful grapes or kiwi. Just a thought if you are running out of room or trellises in your garden.

I’m wanting to plant Hardy kiwi on my ugly 6’ chain link fence. Will it look good or grow up & fall over like an unkept bush? I want sort of close to the fence. We have about 2 acres closed in by fence.

I've got one spot for a vining plant set aside, next to my grapes. I'm kinda leaning toward maypops, but I have considered an Issai kiwi. I think the size of the hardy kiwis has been a bit intimidating, but it does sound like the Issai variety is quite a bit less vigorous.

So far, I have had entirely the opposite result with the survival my kiwis as far as their sex goes. The males are thriving, but it looks like the MSU kiwis I have are still in transplantation shock. It has only been a few weeks, so I hope they bounce back.

Seems like just 2 plants (male+female) will already take up plenty of space, and probably produce a lot too though. Not sure if I want to dedicate space to more.

Hello. Thank you for your video. I lived in Portland most of my life, but I now live in Salem. I saw that in Nov of 2023 (or was it 2022?), the USDA Plant Zone changed Portland from 8b to 9! What a shock! Salem is still 8b. My friend from may years ago, lived in Scappoose (I think USDA Zone 7) and had a Kiwi that had massively large leaves! I am about 75% sure he told me it was a Kiwi, but I could be mistaken. He was not interested in the fruit, just the tropical look of the larger leaves. Do you happen to know of a Kiwi that has massive large leaves but is not grown for fruit? My good friend passed over 12 years ago and his property has been changed so the big vine is now gone. Any thoughts on what this could have been? I just subscribed to your channel. My yard is small, but I hope a Kiwi is in my future... Thank you for the good information on this plant. Jack

I started Bower kiwi from seed last year. My understanding, from research, is that they can be planted in poor soil to slow vine growth and they will still produce
@ParkrosePermaculture

Yes! You do have to be careful with clay soil that is slow draining, though. Root rot can be an issue if the soil drains poorly.

@@ParkrosePermaculture they can also cook and freeze when they are getting established. we lost a couple the first year because they were in very hot spot for one an the other one got snow killed after fully leafing out. Now the ones we have are very well established so not worried about them now, more of a management task than a worried about survival thing.

I have a Dumberton Oak vine. I live in Toronto region of Canada. We had a lot of fruit last year but every single berry was eaten by squirrels - we got to eat none. This year 2024 though, I did not see a single flower, and it is already end of May. However, there is a lot of green growth. What I want to know is when does the vine actually flower? After the start of green growth or at the very beginning of the spring, when no leaves have yet appeared? I must mention that I did pruning during the last summer, and then again in late winter (around February). I made sure last year's wood was retained.

I Enjoy watching your videos! I purchased two Issia Hardy Kiwi bare roots and planted them initially in pots. I'm in the process of constructing a heavy duty cable trellis. The bare root package says hardy to zone 9 , I live in Central FL zone 9B , since Florida sun is very strong I am looking at planting my vines in part shade, they would get aprox 4-5 hours of full sun . I would appreciate your thoughts as to if you think my plan is appropriate.

Thank you for the update! Does your Kens red produce fruit every year? I've read they're not dependable producers. I took your recommendation and planted a Dumbarton Oaks last year and it's the most hardy of the 3 varieties I have. Big and aggressive out of the gate. But they're ALL very aggressive. My 3 yo Ken's red female and male are full of flower buds now. Fingers crossed, this will be my first crop!

Im in zone 6b and was wondering if its possible to keep this vine 6 foot by 6 ft because it will be growing on a deck we have 6 month growing season may to frost around October i go at bare root and I know for certain it will take a couple of years to mature fully its going to stay in a container.

@ParkrosePermaculture
@ParkrosePermaculture 10 месяцев назад
I have not had any problem with powdery, mildew and kiwis, but it is a real problem for roses here. I don’t generally have it as a problem on my grapes, because I try to prune them for a really good air circulation.
@OsirusHandle
@OsirusHandle 10 месяцев назад
@@ParkrosePermaculture thanks for the reply. ill have to try being more involved with pruning, but also maybe just unlucky. idk! our roses always get black spot and rust at the end of the year but by picking the bad leaves they seem to die slow enough it doesnt affect them and we get huge blooms every year. we tend to be quite aggressive on them though with pruning. maybe next year we try the kiwi 😅

I threw out a hardy kiwi plant I got from Etsy after I watched a show about them being invasive back east. It showed the vines pulling down trees in a (state?) park in Massachusetts. What do you think about this?
@catharinephoto
@catharinephoto 2 года назад
And I really wanted to grow it!
@ParkrosePermaculture
@ParkrosePermaculture 2 года назад
I have never found a volunteer in my garden. The vines should definitely NOT be released into the wild because they get huge and can smother other plants. I’m not sure about their invasive potential in terms of escaping from the home garden…they tend to have a pretty low viability from seed. I saw Massachusetts declined to list them as invasive “because of general lack of spread from areas of introduction”. It’s definitely aggressive and takes maintenance, but I don’t know enough about it’s potential to escape into the wild to make a definitive statement on invasiveness. Aggressive? Yes. I guess I’d err on the side of talking with local folks who grow it in your area.
@tomfarkas9507
@tomfarkas9507 2 года назад
@@catharinephoto I grow hardy kiwi (2 varieties) on Cape Cod. The vines are probably 5 years old. I've not noticed any volunteers either. My permaculture instructor turned me onto the plant - she is in Western Ma. in Shutesbury. My opinion on invasiveness is that compared to oriental bittersweet and porcelain berry, the kiwi is a non issue. In fact, I sometimes wonder if it could outcompete those two plants. I have incredible issues with both of those invasive and wish they'd provide the yield that kiwi does. PM me if you'd like some cuttings :)
@CampingforCool41
@CampingforCool41 Год назад
It doesn’t seem to spread much by root or seed so it’s probably fine as long as you don’t plant them near any trees and forget about them.
