Amazing informative video! I find bella to have been tough the first time! This viedo definitely gave me an insight on how i can get them to thrive now!
Doug this is thrilling! I’m so excited! I too changed my growing medium this summer to coco husk and perlite! Everything is growing so much better. You put the frosting on the cake by sharing your watering technique! Thank you so much!!
Hi Lynda! I have around 95% of my Hoyas now in coconut husk and perlite, and it works better than everything else I have tried and failed with - sometimes multiple times! It might take a little longer to water them with the plunge and drain method, but I think that it is worth the effort. I'm super happy that your plants are growing better using coconut husk as well!
Your Bella’s are stunning! This goes to show you that no matter how long we have been doing something we can always learn more and better ways to improve.
Great video on Bella’s Doug! They have not ever been the focus of my collection, though after seeing yours in full bloom I realize I need to devote more time to them.
Your Bella collection is stunning. Thank you for sharing. I've had my Bella for about 1 year and in Pon on a north-facing window and it has been blooming profusely all summer long. If things go sideways I will remember your planting method. Again, thank you for your videos.
I am so glad that you have found a way to grow Bella that works well for you! Thank you for the kind words and watching my little video; Happy Growing!
Thank you for sharing your awesome tips Doug! I have a tiny hoya bella and she hasn't been doing super well, so I will switch it to your methods today. Your Bellas are absolutely gorgeous!
did nothing for two years. I put it outside and now it is over a foot long, but I don't believe it's ever going to flower. Of all my hoya, it is definitely the most frustrating. At least now I have a goal!
Hi Doug, great video and gorgeous Bellas! Where do you over winter your Bella's? Mine are in the house year round with about 60% humidity under full spectrum lights. I try to keep them on the cool side, by the south facing windows away from my heat source in the winter and I find they tend to do better. I added a bit of cactus soil to the coco husk chips for the Hoya that need more moisture as in the house they tend to dry out a bit faster.Yup, the coco husk chips have been great for my Hoyas, changed everyone over about 8 months ago. It simplifies everything so much which is a plus with so many Hoyas. Have a great day, Happy Fall! 💚
Hi Carol, I am planning to overwinter all of my Bellas in windows in the regular house. My conditions are similar to yours, but I probably don't have nearly as much light as most of my windows actually face north. I will know a lot more about how well they will perform in the windows in a few months. I am happy that you have had success with coco chips too! I hope you have a wonderful, happy Fall as well❣
Nice collection of hoya Bellas, thanks for sharing. I have only the original one , which grows well in semihydro but doesn't bloom for few years now. Do they need lots of sun light?
They really don't need that much light, but do save most of their flowering for the summer when there is the most available. I have had my Bella grow poorly, but they have always wanted to flower so I don't know what is causing yours not to flower unless it has something to do with the semi-hydro?
I now swear by your coconut husk method as well, Doug. Thank you so much for turning me on to it! I've never seen such a stunning specimen of PES-03, either. Another one to transition to the new medium post haste, I guess. Very beautiful plants, but I was missing your seedling that has three leaves per node by default.
I also can't believe that after 8 years of trying to grow PES-03, I finally may have figured out the secret. I will know a lot more after going through a winter with it hanging in a regular north facing window upstairs without the benefit of the warmth and humidity of a grow tent. Right now it looks fabulous and has even gotten larger than it was in the video. Everyone of the three leaved Bella cuttings that I started immediately reverted to two leaves with all new growth so there would not have bee much to show.
So glad i took a look at this video. Just got a replacement Bella Lois Bois and i potted it in coco husk and leca because i have it in a self-watering pot indoors, so far it is doing better than any i have ever tried growing. I have a small cutting of the green one and i will be trying your method for that one. I have some chunky perlite so it hope it goes well too. Thanks for the great videos! 😊
Good luck with your new Bella Louis Bois Patsy! There is nothing as nice as a well grown Bella; I think you will find that my method for growing the different ones to work pretty well. Once you can get these plants on a weekly routine, they really are not that difficult to care for. Keep up the great growing!
I have the medium you suggest! I will be trying this for sure :) My bella is outside and blooming....but yours is so beautiful...all of them! My outer var bella is still on the small side but now I know what it will like at the repot! Thanks so much Doug!
Thank you! Gorgeous plants! Do you have a way to secure them in the pot, to prevemt them from “jumping” out of the pot once they grow bigger and heavier? Or you prefer to trim them?
That is a question that I have not faced in quite some time. With my lightweight mix the weight of the plant will likely want to pull that root ball out of the pot. I guess I would opt to trim the plant and use the cuttings to restart another plant using it to eventually replace the original. Bellas do grow pretty quickly.
Seeing them growing from seeds and the seed pod was really great! I have some coco coir that is about the size of mini marshmallows. Would that size work?
Lovely plants. Does the coir dry out much between waterings? I have been keeping my bellas in saucers with a little water in so they never dry out and they grow very nicely. That is in coir fibre compost rather than chips.
Good question! The coir chips at this point hold enough moisture between waterings because I soak the entire root ball. Also, there is a little saucer on the bottom of all of those hanging pots that you saw in the video, which does hold some water even after tipping the plant on its side for about 10 seconds to drain. I might have to move to keep more water in those saucers as the plants get larger. When the plant gets really large it will be time to move it to either a larger pot, or start the whole thing over again from cuttings. Because these Bellas can get so large, I would probably opt for starting over, because of space limitations. I am glad that you are doing so well using coir fiber with a little water in the saucer!
@@DougChamberlainVTHoyas Thanks, Doug. I enjoy your videos not only for the content, but that you address growing under northern conditions. I'm in Duluth, MN, on MN Point on Lake Superior. Also my family settled here from Bennington, Vermont as did many others from that area.
Hello Doug from Puerto Rico!!! First timer on your channel and just subscribed. Those Hoya Bellas are stunning!!! Just started my English speaking channel and would appreciate your support. What fertilizer do you use on them? 🪴
They are apparently out of the black, but still have the green. I would buy as many as you can, because when these things go out of stock, sometimes you can never find them again. I looked for over 10 years to find these when they were discontinued the last time. Here is the link: www.amazon.com/dp/B09V3H5D45/ref=sbl_dpx_outdoor-hanging-planters_B09V3H5D45_0?th=1
Doug, do you add any liquid fertilizer to these beauties? I just have the regular Hoya Bella and the buds always seem to fall off below they even get bigger to bloom! I’m going to try your method!
The Hoya Bellas can easily take that kind of warmth as long as the substrate doesn’t dry out too much. I find it is a plant that it’s important to get into a watering routine with and not deviate too much from it or it won’t be happy.
I use Jacks 20-20-20 and Liqui-dirt: www.amazon.com/s?k=jacks+all+purpose+fertilizer+20-20-20&crid=1MZ2DGTO29AQ6&sprefix=jacks%2Caps%2C315&ref=nb_sb_ss_ts-doa-p_10_5 and www.amazon.com/dp/B07PHNQSP9?ref=nb_sb_ss_w_as-reorder-t1_k1_1_4&=&crid=WHXDB6XG5UXU&sprefix=liqu&th=1
Here is the product that I have been using now for a number of years with great results: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0049XH0FM/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
@@1101naomi The remaining Hoyas are that are not in coco/coir are in a soil mix. They are the older Hoyas that have been in their pots for years, and won't get moved to coir until, I finally need to restart them.
Suponho que sua mistura de envasamento esteja muito úmida ou muito seca. Hoya Bella gosta de uma mistura consistentemente úmida. Precisa ser regado antes de secar e gosta de ter uma rotina de rega consistente.
