I knew from the minute that I found you on RU-vid that you were a gem. The way you present yourself the way you interact on RU-vid the way you speak to us, you are funny and quirky, but all in a good way. You always made me feel so happy to come back to your channel. Your parents must be so proud of you. I never doubted for a minute that you wouldn’t succeeded on your channel. If you don’t mind me comparing you to Laura Vitali on the cooking channel, I admire her just as I admire you. I see you as a journalist as a commentator as a scholar as a professor you name it you could be anything. You have that confidence. I am so happy for you and listen if this gets big you could quit your day job. So happy to be part of your RU-vid channel. Congratulations and good luck.

Most hydreangeas are down to zone 4 so container planting are perfect if your zone 6 and up. The rule of thumb is to make sure your 2 zones up whenever considering to leave them out in pots during the winter. I'm in zone 7b so this isn't a problem for me. I have the limelight & mophead hydrengeas in containers throughout the seasons.

Use the original pot as a mold for your root ball in the new pot. Works every time. Soil in new pot needs to be slightly damp to hold shape. Cheers

@@kushclarkkent6669 not super versed on hydrangeas, but they’re beautiful plants when in bloom. Most of my knowledge comes from the industry mentioned in your username lol. Mycorrhizae is good for most plants as it creates more bio activity in common potting soil. Use good quality fertilizers and keep an eye on soil PH. Learn how to read plants and their foliage and you’ll always know the right direction to go. Also if indoors, use fans, makes stronger plants.

I have large heavy pots that I bring into my garage every year. My pots are smaller on the bottom and most have an edge at the top. I take a rope and a hand truck (dollie) to move them even though the base of the pot is larger. I walk up to the pot and tie the rope to the left side of the dollie and go around the pot and tie the loose end to the other side of the dollie pulling tight. The pot is now connected and can be moved into the garage! If the pot is very wide you can place a piece of plywood on the bottom of the dollie and rock the pot on to the dollie. The weight of the potted plant holds the plywood in place long enough to get it in the garage. Some of my pots are 20 inches tall x 20 inches wide while the base/bottom of the hand cart is only 9 inches wide. It works great without any help!

TY found you recently, after completing my 1st year with my hydrangea. Basically did what was recommended from a ton of reading. My secret share is I do my plant work in my garage. I place a layer (plastic trash bag) under my work. When I’m finished, I either put what’s on it in the trash, reuse it or depending on how messy…throw it away! 😂

Great information on posting hydrangeas. I bought a few small ones this year and potted them because the soil in my garden is so hard I can't dig a hole for them. The flowers seem to be turning brown. I am experimenting with changing their location si they don't get too much or too little sun. Leaves seem to be bright green so I know they are not dead. I stratify my soil. At the bottom ordinary compost that can keep some moisture before it goes out the draining holes. Next level is perlite-compost mixture for a more airy mixture. Top most layer is depending on what I need. Keep water in equals bark, or normal drainage needs compost or the same mixture as layer two. It is a misconception you cannot use ordinary dirt. It depends on how you mimic your local circumstances in the pot.

Is your garage fairly warm to be able to overwinter the plants and hence survive? Do you know how warm it stays in there as opposed to outside? I'm asking this because our garage on a single family home gets very cold, the ceiling is not insulated. My daughters live two miles from me in a townhouse and their garage is insulated by their own floor above the garage and both sides, also. Even when it gets below zero outside it can stay above freezing in their garage and it also faces south and gets warmer from the sun as opposed to mine where it is only a few degrees above the outdoor temperature with only one of the sides of my garage against a wall that is attached to the heated house. Just wanted to point that out to some to check to see how cold their garages get before assuming they can overwinter in their particular garage. Beautiful hydrangeas!

However, the fall is now here, I live in the hardiness zone 5 and in an apartment building with no unheated garage or basement. The only possible places to keep my plants at home are either the balcony, a storage space in the balcony (without any insulation so not much warmer probably) or inside of the apartment (which is quite warm). Would it be possible to overwinter it in any of these places?

I also thought I had to water hydrangeas over head since they want so much water but apparently I wasn’t supposed to do that. My pot soil started growing white mushrooms. On the web it said if hydrangeas do this that there’s no treatment & mushroom root rot will kill the hydrangea. So I started pulling it out. When I noticed, the white mushrooms were growing from the outside potting soil I added to fill the pot & not growing from the hydrangea soil. Do I keep the hydrangea and change the pot soil or ?

Hello! My dear friend gifted me my first hydrangea! I live in a townhouse in KY (zone 6-7). I unfortunately dont have a garage....any suggestions for winter? I do have a outdoor storage closet 🤷🏼‍♀️ Thank you!
@ChicagoGardener
@ChicagoGardener 2 месяца назад
I would put it in the storage closet and put some burlap, blankets, or other material around it for insulation.

How long can the average hydrangea stay in the container? I mean do the out grow it and die after a year or two?
@ChicagoGardener
@ChicagoGardener 2 года назад
From my experience, 2 to 3 years before I need to pot it into a larger container!

I haven’t changed it in the hydrangea pots but I do add compost each spring!

When exactly do you bring the hydrangea in your garage? When its leaves die or as soon as the weather gets to certain degree Celsius? Thank you!

New Subscriber here!! Just bought our FIRST HOUSE and am beginning my journey of gardening! I bought these huge black planter. Its 21 inches tall and 11 in wide across each way. With that much DEPTH how do I fill it up 🥺 Do I just need bags and bags of soil? Thank in advance!
@ChicagoGardener

If what you plant it in will use all the space, yes lots of soil!! I also like to mix in compost as well from local garden centers. If you don’t need all the space, I have seen people fill the bottom of large containers with bark or mulch then put soil on top.

This is how I don't make a huge mess: get a large tote (I have a few 27 gal. HDX totes from Home Depot), empty the 50 qt. bag of Miracle Gro potting soil into it. I add perlite and worm castings to the tote (add whatever amendments you prefer). Then, I get my plant pot, my plants and a little stool to sit on (I'm old) and while holding the pot so it's sitting on the rim of the tote, I reach into the tote with a 3 qt. feed scoop (Tractor Supply) and fill the pot. The soil falls back into the tote if I don't get it into the pot for some reason. Sit the pot right on top of the soil in the tote to put the plant in the pot. It's large enough . Brush off any excess soil back into the tote. It's a handy method for window box containers too. I always have a tote or two full and ready to go. Buy the soil and other stuff when it's on sale. Best wishes.

This is such a good method, thank you!! I just recently got a tote to store soil in over the winter so I’m definitely trying this out!

@ChicagoGardener

If you have an unheated garage or shed, id recommend putting it there for the winter. If not, move it up against the wall of a building for more winter protection.

What about the PH since they are acidic plants. Do they need special soil?
@ChicagoGardener
@ChicagoGardener 2 года назад
I add soil acidifier to my pots about once a month for all of my acid loving plants!

Yes, beginner here… The purple cow activated organic compost is not available for purchase in Connecticut or for delivery. Is there any other suggested compost?
@ChicagoGardener
@ChicagoGardener Год назад
I’ve had good luck with all types of compost! The mushroom compost from Home Depot has worked well for me if that’s available near you.

Is your hydrangea in the ground or a container? I would check for water issues first, either too much or too little.
