> So do I. I bought a packet of red leaf lettuce seeds circa 2007 and have been growing them ever since. This year I experimented with constructing a tarp to protect the lettuce from sun during the summer to reduce bolting, and also growing seedlings in a tray and planting them repeatedly to extend my lettuce season. Both seem to be good.

Thank you Kevin for making informative videos delivered in a simple way. Im from Britain and my children wanted to know how things grow. So for 2 years ive watched your videos and then I teach them. You have inspired a whole generation of my family to get growing for which I am eternally grateful. My kids now spend their summer growing produce rather than playing video games. You will never know my kids, or their friends who see their enthusiasm for growing and then start asking their parents if they can grow food too, but please be humbled knowing the difference you are making to people's lives and the snowball effect it has. Be proud of what you have accomplished my friend, not only in business success but also bringing good to the world.

Love making plant guilds. Waiting for slower growing veg to grow and mature leaves me a lot of space to seed or plant in fast greens and small roots such as radish and green onions. At this point in my 58 years of gardening I utilize every inch of space by putting seeds in everywhere and anywhere it makes sense, naturally paying attention to variety, eventual space needs, time required. Maximizing my best garden soils means less work developing other areas. Also I never turn the soil. I use a potato fork and just give the soil a slight lift or boost to loosen it. No more heavy work for me unless absolutely necessary (don't like to disturb the soil microbiology).

Thi summer I constructed a tarp over my lettuce to reduce sun exposure. Also planted lettuce seedling several times to extend the lettuce season. So some may bolt, but others are still growing. Next year I'm thinking of planting lettuce in a mostly shaded spot and see how that works. The lettuce would get some sun in just the morning or just the afternoon and be cooler pretty much all the time. A few plants in containers that can be moved to shade might also be a good experiment.

After harvesting lettuce leaves if I wash them I help dry them by running them through a salad spinner. Although the leaves are still a little damp after being run through the spinner it greatly reduces the amount of moisture you have to deal with. I then place them in a large bowl and in a few hours they are mostly dry.
@SeattlePioneer

After pulling leaves off my red leaf lettuce, I wash them in water to get rid of any dirt or insects. I shake the water off and put the leaves in a plastic bag, and then into the refrigerator until I'm ready to use them. Some water typically collects in the bottom of the plastic bag, but I'm happy with the lettuce this method provides.

I’ve been growing Paris island for a few years, even when bolted flavors still pretty good and not very bitter.

Im from Tucson Arizona, and I've found mulching in the winter time. Depending on what you are growing, slows down growth as the soil takes far too long to dry out. Obviously I was also over watering, but I've found just in general my lettuce, and brassicas do ten times better without mulch. I have a feeling mulch is going to help A TON in summer when it'll be hard to keep my soil moist.

Depending on the moment of the year we don't sow the same varieties, for some reason the red ruby is very cold hardy (I feel the rougher texture helps to not get crushed by snow), so livin in Québec its got a lot of love from us. And as summer hits we switch for softer romaine varieties 😊

Easiest way I've sewn lettuce is the way Charles Dowding does it. Doesn't try to pick apart those tiny seeds, just uses an open tray then after they all come up, just separates them from the clump and puts them in the starter trays individually. I'm really not good at thinning and this is working well this year.

I could see thinning them applying to those who might not have the space to facilitate it, but as a fellow fan of Charles Dowding, it's definitely worth mentioning the "pricking out method". For those who don't know, the method involves taking the extras gently out of the cell tray and moving them to an open cell tray spot as to avoid waste, while increasing your yield.

I've fallen into the habit of starting red leaf lettuce seed in plastic trays indoors. When they get to a suitable size, I pluck out the biggest and replant them in the garden From time to time, I pluck out others to extend the growing season. That seems to work pretty well. I saw a video in which someone suggested mixing seed with sand to reduce excess seed planting. That sounds like it would be worth a try next year.

I'm on year 2 or 3 of the Epic plug trays. The 6-cell size. They are the best. Super strong, inexpensive. They clean up fast and have a nice size hole at the base (unsolicited endorsement).

I grew Black Seeded Simpson last year. It grew well. I made a lot of sandwiches out of it. Best looking lettuce for a picture of a sandwich or burger. Definitely doing it again.

We got some indoor lights in November. The lettuce is still a little ways out from us being able to harvest, but my 3 year old and I just barely, less then an hour ago, planted more spinach

Not sure if this will be seen by anyone that matters, much less Kevin, but my friend over at 90 Second Mycology (mushrooms), is having his channel demonetized because YT says his content violates their guidelines, is "harmful and promotes drug use." The man teaches a technique that is great for people just getting into the hobby, whether it be for medicinal or gourmet mushrooms. As we all know, when starting a new hobby, getting wins under our belt further drive our intrigue and passion for that activity. Growing mushrooms can be a tricky project as it is often costly to get started, but with this gentleman's technique one is able to get started for a fraction of the price with great success. We are here to learn to be more self sufficient and mushrooms can be used for a variety of things, least of all, food. Please do what you can to help appeal this decision! Again: 90 Second Mycology. Thank you!
