I'm harvesting my Luffas (/Loofahs) and this is a little guide on when to harvest them, and what to do if yours aren't quite ready yet.
Growing luffas is a lot of fun and I hope that this video will get you well on your way to growing your own luffas too.
It's important to harvest luffas at the right time so that they are well formed and don't produce a big sticky mess! If you peel them at the right time the job will be quick, easy and (pretty much) mess free!
Luffas are a really great alternative to plastic sponges in the bathroom and in the kitchen. They are sustainable, fun to grow and make for hard wearing dish sponges and exfoliating tools.
I grew just two luffa plants this year and they produced a total of 25 luffas in the end - that's enough for all my friends and family and some for me to reduce my plastic usage in the year to come.

Thank. You for this video, it’s what I needed to know. Am planning on adding a loofa to my homemade soap for gifts.

Thanks for the timeline information. I harvested 6 this year. It's a lovely tasting vegetable that I tasted last year when I visited Bangladesh.

I finally decided to grow luffas this year because I bought shampoo ginger roots and I thought it would be perfect timing. I'm really excited now to open my luffa and see how it turned out. Thank you for showing yours. 💜 happy growing 💜 Eta love the poly tunnel 💜

Hello and Thank You! What a lovely video - you answered all of my questions! I live on the beach of a little tropical island in the Caribbean so I have no worries of cold weather. I grew one plant as an experiment, had lots and lots of blossoms but only one loofah actually grew. It is small but has a brown patch so I think I'll harvest it soon and try two plants next time! Thanks again for your help.

Thanks Beccy. I'm just about to transplant two luffa seedlings I've grown (I'm in Australia). Never grown them before. Thanks for the useful info 💙💚🤎🌏🌱🍃🌿🖐

@@SowMuchMore thanks for replying, hope you don’t mind asking your advice. I’m an absolute beginner on gardening, I’ve just moved to Scotland & I’ve bought a tiny polytunnel. I also have a small conservatory. Now, my question is: is it worth it to invest in a couple of LED light panels to help seeds growing in the conservatory? I’ve noticed my first seedlings are struggling for sunlight.

If the light levels are low then yes it is worth getting some LED lights. I use these in spring too to extend the growing period during the day for things like chillis. But word to the wise; there is no discernible difference between the expensive lights and the cheap lights….! 😁

Would it be possible to grow them in a conservatory? I'm in west coast of Scotland. Just discovered your channel and podcast and it's giving me hope for next season I can do some growing :)

When you say that you wash them, are you just rinsing them water and getting all the seeds out, then letting them air dry?

I am in Wisconsin and I grew loofah a few years ago but they weren't able to cure enough I did use them in soaps but I just thought they were a cool plant. So this year I started a couple of plants inside in march. I have 15 loofahs hanging right now and hoping the frost holds out couple more months. But I'm definitely going to harvest them sooner I thought they had to be black and dried out Thank you for the video Ps Am I the only 1 that thinks the loofah leaves when green smell really good

Oh no! September is way too early, I’d plant in January, did you have any luck?
@theresacard2237

So, do you have to bring these inside before a hard frost? Would a frost ruin them if they're not dry?
@SowMuchMore
@SowMuchMore 10 месяцев назад
The plants will die back but the actually structure inside the luffa will be ok if they are dry. If not dry harvest before a frost though because any that aren’t properly dry might rot
