It's so satisfying growing insects because you get more so quickly! I bred these flies myself with a similar setup. I only allowed the 25% BIGGEST pupae to become my breeding adults. In only a month 90% of my pupae were that size! So you can quickly create 'super size' worms through selective breeding.

Your ambition and enthusiasm is great! For anyone watching that has backyard chickens, who may not want to do such a large amount of maggots, there is an EASY AND FREE way to do the same! When you clean out our chicken house, put some of it in a box, or plastic container. Put all of it, straw, chicken droppings, and FOOD, into the container. Leave it outside in the yard. make sure there are drain holes in the bottom. The first day, water it throughally! Till water coes out the holes. Then leave it in the yard. Dont be too concerned about light. But ou dont want it to bake in the sun! a partly shady area would be best, but anywhere out of constant dircet sunlight will work. I put mine right in the yard, where the birds eat. After a bit. maybe a week or so, you will know, because of the smell it has, you can tip it over, and the chickens will do the rest! There will be all kinds of grubs and maggots! I do not know where the come from. Maybe they are in the straw. Or even in the crumb food I feed. Or maybe even from just out in nature! But I have done this for years! and it always works. Well, not in the dead of winter! But I bet if ou put it inside with a little heat, they would show up as well! But I have never tried it! And the first time, you may have to show your chickens that they are there. It is easy to do. Just tip it over, and spread it out a bit. They will find them! AND, once they learn, they will usually let you know that it is time for them to be harvested! Cause they will get in the containers and try to scratch them out! lol But it is much easier when ou tip it over, so they can get to it! AND, the yard will grow all sorts of things and be very nutritious for all sorts of plants! SO after they get all the bugs out, toss some whole seed feed on the spot! And they will have sprouts to eat for weeks to come! It is a fun and productive process! with really very little effort!

You mean what I see each time I clean my poultry is the larvae in this video?
@southjerseysound7340
@southjerseysound7340 3 года назад
@@benjaminonuoha9202 my grandmother did the same thing and they loved the grubs. We also grew earthworms and they were one of the best additions to things because of the byproducts. Here the worm castings are like black gold for the organic guys and the juice that runs off is amazing. We're able to get rid of kitchen scraps that they pay us to take away and feed the worms. Then our worms create organic fertilizer from food that we are paid to take away that we can sell for a lot of money. On top of that we sell the runoff as castings tea and use it for our crops and last but least is the worms. I use them for feed in my aquaculture project where they get dried and ground up into feed. They also get fed to the chickens and last but least is they are sold to other gardeners, fishing tackle stores and more. So we earn a little bit feeding them, from the waste products and the worms themselves.
@wordswritteninred7171
@wordswritteninred7171 3 года назад
@@southjerseysound7340 That sounds like a win win win plan! Getting paid, saving money, nutrition for chickens and garden! I'm gonna look into this! Thanks! Have any good reference s by chance?
@wordswritteninred7171
@wordswritteninred7171 3 года назад
@@benjaminonuoha9202 What do you mean by "clean your poultry? Are you talking about when you harvest meat birds? Or are you talking about when you clean their coup? Any chicken you kill to eat, should not have any worms! Don't eat if it does! To keep your birds from getting worms, get Dia to macro use earth. Put it in your feed, and around the coup, and in their dust bath spots! The worms inside a bird carcus is not what you see in the video! If you are talking about when you clean your coup, then yes, it could be the same thing. Many different insects have a larva or maggot stage of life. If you find them inside your coup, then you have too much moisture in your coup. Either they keep spilling their water. Or you may have a leak in roof. While I intentionally try to grow them, I would not want them to be inside my coup. And the chickens can smell them and hunt them put. So if you are funding "some", there must be ALOT of them ! Cause they are eating most of them. While it's good nutrition, having a wet coup is really bad for your chickens! This will lead to all sorts of health issues. Even death. I would figure this out asap. Hope it's an easy fix!

I should say one important thing. You have the ants problem taken care of, but when raising BSF or Mealworms or Earthworms, keep an eye out for microscopic mites! There are (white or yellow or tan) Grain Mites that will eat ALL the eggs of mealworms. The grain mites need water or moisture or humidity to live. There RED mites which will suck the blood from black soldier flies. You can get mites in all species of things you raise, and they breed way too fast. Grain Mites will first appear as a "dust" but then you realize the dust is moving. So, when transfering larvae from 1 container to another, be sure you are not transfering mites. I do not know how much of an issue they are in your country, but they are an issue where I live. Luckily, a dry enough environment, can kill them off. If you get mites, do not give up, they can be extinguished, I have succeeded. You may need to heat-treat food before feeding to them, to insure mite-eggs are killed.

I should've said this when I first watched this video... After watching your first video about Black Soldier Flies, I started doing some deep research and wondered where I could get some for myself. I eventually found some BSF larvae in my backyard some weeks ago; I couldn't believe it OMG. I then constructed a little maggot farm where I am now keeping them... I'm planning to use them as chick feed, thanks to your inspiration. But I don't have chickens yet. I want the BSF to reproduce through a few generations where I'll have enough to sustain my chickens when they arrive. I am extremely happy for you Dr. Daniel.
