Hi everyone, today I'm showing you how to grow Oak trees from acorns, Acorns are the seed from an oak tree.
Oak trees are incredibly easy to grow from seed and I'll show you the easiest method I've found to get them off to a great start.
I'm also running an experiment growing them in water as indoor plants.
Hope you enjoy today's video.
Thanks for watching 🌱🌱😊🌱🌱

I planted, carefully about 18 fresh acorns, and zero sprouted. The squirrels planted about 100 and these sprouted. Now I let the squirrels do it and lift the baby trees up when needed. ; )

My son has a 2 acre field on which he now wishes to grow trees. In 2021, I started planting a variety of trees but will plant mostly Oaks. In my garden, I have a glorious Oak tree that I believe is around 110 years old. My calculation of its age is derived from the circumference of the bough, 1 metre from the ground (275 centimetres) divided by 2.5. Last autumn (2022) I picked 18 acorns just as they were about to drop and planted them in pots of damp compost, leaving them in my cool garage for the winter. I took them outside at the very beginning of March 2023 and now, nearly 3 months later, have 16 Oak saplings doing really well. 2 of them have sprouted double boughs - which I will leave to see how they develop, in comparison to the single boughs. I will give them 2 or 3 years in pots and transfer them to my son's field and build guards around them all, to try and protect them from pesky vermin, rabbits and sheep. I am totally absorbed by this project and one day (long after I have shuffled off this mortal coil!) my few years of planting and developing these wonderful trees will be a magnificent site to behold - I hope. I so enjoyed your video Kit, many thanks.

I believe acorns from the White Oaks family begin growing the year they hit the ground. Acorns from the Red Oak family need stratification and do need an over wintering in cold storage either artificial in refrigeration or naturally thru an outside winter period. The Reds will then sprout and begin to grow the following spring after dropping.

Thank you for sharing your skills on growing oak seeds. Your method is the best one I found to work great ! I tried with wet paper towels , ziplock bags and so on. Congratulations, your method is # 1 as far as I’m concern. I hope this helps out other gardeners who are just starting out or even professionals. It can blow your brain 🤯 when you don’t know what your doing wrong in growing beautiful trees, plant, and shrubs. Thank you again. 😊

You can also simulate how oaks grow naturally. Get regular fallen acorns that haven't sprouted and plant them outside in compost. Leave them over the winter and in late April you will see shoots appearing.

All cold Strat seeds are going to be effectively the same. Grab them in the fall/from fruit, moist peat or Coco coir in a bag, chuck the seeds in and put them in a place like your fridge or cold cellar for 90-100 days. Then warm them out and let them root in the bag for a little then plant them out. Alternatively just collect a bunch of seeds in the spring and plant them, they'll probably sprout. Just less control this way. You could also just bury them in your yard and protect them from animals until spring when they will germinate naturally.

Acorns will still germinate if you take them from the tree. I currently have 5 potted English Oak seedlings that grew from acorns taken off a tree in September 2022. When i took them off the tree the acorns were green but they quickly turn from green to brown and within a week they'd started to split with tap roots starting to push out. At this point you pot them up and they produce growth above ground anywhere between Autumn through to the next spring.

Great video. A couple of years ago I collected quite a lot of acorns from highlands of Scotland and planted them out in pots, the next spring. Most of them sprouted and were doing well. Unfortunately the local grey squirrels dug most of them up and ate them, even though they had germinated. The few remaining ones seemed to die from a infestation of inch worms. But i will try again next year.

I love collecting and planting acorns - i do this every autumn. The best way to do it is to put them underground in october and they will grow next spring. I was putting them in pots 2/3 years ago - now its waste of time - its better to put them outside and get them used to cold and sun etc. They belong outside. The only problem with that is birds digging them out when they look for food.

Very interesting! Thank you. How deep would you estimate the tap root of that 4 yr. one? How well do they do transplanted? Would a younger or older do better? It would seem the older has more risk of root damage but Idk anything about it.
@donnavorce8856
@donnavorce8856 10 месяцев назад
No one answered so I'll take a swing - The root of a 4 yo tree in the ground might go to 3 or 4 feet deep. If you can dig them when they're fully dormant (mid December in the northern hemisphere) and take care not to break many main roots you can transplant young trees. Grown in a pot you're confounding the tree by keeping its roots in the tight pot. They'll tolerate it but won't develop as an in-ground oak will. If you sprouted acorns in pots and put them in the ground in a year or two it'd probably develop naturally. Or upsize containers every 3 or 4 years (till you need a wheel dolly to move the pot around). Cheers

I just soaked my acorn seeds that sank with hydrogen peroxide to kill any fungus that may had lingered and somehow all the seeds cracked and sprouted with in a day or two after throwing them in a ziplock bag and let them sit for a few days and I didn't expect them to sprout after one day. the ones that didn't sprout sprouted at day 2.

I'm thinking about buying some particular white oak seeds to plant but I'm undecided which ones to get. I've read a lot about them and am worried about germination. I'll only be getting either 68 smaller or 35 larger acorns (same price per ounce), and they're expensive. They've been in storage maybe 5 months, which being recalcitrant seeds means they don't have a long storage life and have to maintain their moisture...and I've read that parasitic insects greatly lower germination rates. Then I read that the larger acorns-without their caps are the best to use because they'll produce better seedlings. I've grown a lot of different trees from seed and I have to agree that the bigger the seed, the better chance something has to survive. Right now I'm growing Deodara Cedar..which I'm really impressed with. So yeah, I'm wondering if you've noticed the bigger acorns doing better than the smaller ones. I've never grown oaks but I've transplanted them and I know they're very resilient trees, I'm just trying to get the most viable ones I can. By the way, if you've ever grown Elderberry, please tell me your secret. Haha, that's the one tree I just cannot grow for some reason.
@GrowWithKit
@GrowWithKit Год назад
I haven’t really noticed a difference but then I haven’t kept track of them either, I have noticed some of the bigger ones will have 2 embryos and grow 2 trees that you can then separate once they’re a bit bigger. I’ve only ever planted them fresh from the tree in autumn and they’ll germinate almost straight away but won’t send leaves until the following spring. No not tried elderberry but they do grow wild here so might have to have a go one day. Any way good luck with your oak tree. All the best 🌱🌳😊🌳🌱
@wheelmanstan
@wheelmanstan Год назад
@@GrowWithKit Thanks for the reply. Yeah, from what I've read basically the larger the acorn = the more fuel for the seedling. So the root will travel deeper which means it has a better chance at water and once it has water then it has a better chance at sending up a stem to find sunlight. I'll probably buy those seeds next year, I just have too much stuff growing that I'll need to keep alive this year. haha

2 questions: After transplanting my oak tree outside last April after planting it in October 2021, keeping it inside all of last winter, my oak tree lost its main stem in September and all that was left of it was a 1 inch tall stub. It grew 2 branches to the side, but as of November 9, 2022, my oak tree still isn’t changing color and it didn’t grow back the main stem. Will my oak tree grow back its main stem next summer? When will my oak tree change color?
@GrowWithKit
@GrowWithKit Год назад
They shouldn’t be kept indoors, it’s too dry and they need to go dormant, one of the branches should take over as the new main trunk or you’ll get a twin trunk. You can remove a branch and help guide upwards if you like. Young oaks can hold on to their leaves until it gets really cold. One of mine dropped all its leaves over the past few day and the other didn’t yet. I think they change colour more when they’re older.

Just let it do it's thing. It will be fine. The things are meant to be in the ground and trampled, flooded, dried out, eaten down to the ground by deer and squirrels and come back. Especially as a little sprout such as yours. It will have no trouble rebounding. Now once it gets to a certain maturity, say 2-3 years old something catastrophic such as getting plowed down to the ground again may kill it, although even then they sometimes grow back just fine. Nature wouldn't be good at its job if the slightest little unfortunate event killed their sprouts so easily. All that said, plant that sucker where you want it and leave it be. The thing wants to be in the ground, not in a pot and certainly not indoors ever.

find a forest preserve or someone who has land . See if either would like to have oak trees. The trees are a gift to several generations past ours. Just as the ones that we look at today. Just gathered about 150-200 and are planting in a large plot to get a start< then will replant and protect next year or the one after. This is a "mast" year in the USA and there are thousands laying around in the public forests. More than the animals can eat and they fall on mowed areas and walking paths. The seeds will be wasted if they grow then get mowed down. So may as well help the survival of the oaks.
