As some of you might already know, we are moving to the Philippines 🇵🇭 in a few months, so I’ve recently sold all of my potted trees. One of the those that I’ve been really missing is my old Olive Tree, so when I saw this young tree at the store the other day, I couldn’t help but give it a stare 👀 (hubs knew exactly what that stare meant so he ended up buying it for me as a 🎁😁). I know, I know…I could still love a plant even for just a few months right?
I like growing them as houseplants as their foliage is really beautiful to me. Ideally, you’d wanna grow them outdoors in full sun, but since we’re transitioning into colder season, I decided to keep this in my living room and admire its beauty all day long.
If you want to grow one but live in any zone below 8, you’ll have to bring it indoors during the colder months. Here are some tips on how to keep them alive and happy indoors:
🫒It needs a lot of direct sun, so it’s best to keep it by a South facing window. If not available, keep it under grow lights, which is what I’m doing with mine.
🫒In this reel, I fed mine with homemade compost at transplant, and watered with diluted worm tea. You can use any other balanced fertilizer. They love nitrogen - I used to feed my old tree with liquid fish fertilizer twice a month.
🫒It’s drought resistant, but it’s important to keep it watered regurly in order to maintain its health & beauty.
🫒It needs regular watering, but it doesn’t like wet feet so avoid overwatering it or it can cause the roots to rot. Make sure that your pot has good drainage and use a potting mix that drains easily (like a cactus potting mix), and only water when the top inch of soil feels dry.
🫒If your tree is mature enough and you want it to set fruits, it’s best to bring it outdoors in full sun during Spring and Summer, or you can continue to keep it indoors as a houseplant (but most likely, it won’t set fruit if kept indoors all yr long).
Fun fact: They generally need a couple of months of chilling temps (below 50°F) for optimum flower and fruit production.
