I went gray at 50, and loved it! But then a "friend" said on FB that I looked like my husband's mother. Boy did that comment hurt and affect me! I immediately dyed my hair. I regret being so insecure. I am on my 4th cold turkey month now at 53, and have decided that I will never again let ill comments influence how I like to use my hair: grey!!!

My stylist kept telling me it would automatically age me 10 years so I listened and kept coloring my hair until I found I was allergic to nickel and was forced to stop dying my hair. I cut all my hair off and let nature take its course. I am 100% gray and I LOVE it. Embrace your gray. If you don’t like it, you can always go back to color.

This is awesome! You’re so correct. I’m glad that you went for it anyway. I personally, don’t subscribe to the idea that gray hair inherently ages people..

@@justinhickox Several years ago, we had a big function at my work. There was a woman, middle-aged I would say. She was slender and fashionably dressed. She had a pixie cut, like myself, but her hair was completely silver. I couldn't take my eyes off of her. Her looks were so striking that she just glowed. She was the prettier than any of the young women in the room. It's just proof that a woman can be beautiful at ANY age! I'm not trying to toot my own horn, but I try to look my best at all times and I still get looks from all ages of men. LOL.

😱 Beautiful waterfall! I'm just wanting to encourage anyone going grey! Grey hair is beautiful! How I helped my 30yr old self and my mother go grey was this mindset...why not try it, if you hate it you can always dye it! We both loved our grey and never turned back. Other women close to us watched us and was encouraged to do it too! Grey is beautiful!

I’ve gone natural for a year now and enjoying my grey. My hair is thin and fine. What surprised me is that the grey hair camouflages my scalp more than when my hair was brown. You could see the thinness of my hair as the scalp showed through the brown hair.
@justinhickox
@justinhickox 3 года назад
That’s fantastic! Likely what’s going on is when you have all over one main color of hair it can also have a tendency to look a bit thinner. Gray hair, many times, has multi colors. A bit of light in a bit of dark. The dimension that creates can help hair appear to be thicker.

Until I stopped coloring my hair, I didn’t know what “ going grey” would mean. I didn’t realize that under the warm tones I’d been applying was this really cool nuanced amazing hair that is grey in places but the back is darker than I ever imagined. It’s crazy and I love it. It’s changed my wardrobe and my face looks way better. There is no way I could have tested this or seen this coming, you have to grow it out and get the dyed part cut off to see the whole effect.
@justinhickox

its been 12 months since i last colored my hair and i feel FREE FREE FREE - i’m very pepper, thought i’d have more white, but turns out i do have a few white streaks, but mostly a little salt and a lot of pepper, which is a happy surprise to me. the hair that is now natural vs the colored part (yep, i’m going cold turkey i have 4 different colors currently) is so healthy in comparison, not frizzy like the fried colored/bleached part. for me, i made the 100% right decision. i feel like running around in your waterfall forest with my hair flying free in the wind 😂😂

When I was 44 I went cold turkey to grow out my gray. It took two years to grow it to my shoulders, and while it was an adjustment to get used to it, my hair is so healthy now. Dyeing it brown for 20 years was so damaging, it was thinning and breaking off. Now it’s thick and soft, and I haven’t had any yellowing (3+ years).

@jmk1962 3 года назад
I'm nearly 59 and have been dyeing my hair since I was around 30 and I'm sick of it. I already did exactly what Justin suggested. I bought a cheap short choppy style greyish wig off Amazon for about $16 to see what I would look like if I went grey and cut my Covid long hair short. I thought it would look awful but was pleasantly surprised that it actually looked quite nice. I sent a photo to a friend who lives in another country pretending I'd cut my hair and let it go natural. She loved it and thought it was real and then I admitted it was a wig. I am now on the look out for a better quality wig slightly longer that the cheap one so that I can wear it when the awful horizontal regrowth line gets on my nerves. Once I find the perfect wig I am going to go for it. Have been watching lots of silver ladies videos here on RU-vid and they all look so beautiful and free, so can't wait to join them. Covid is helping as I already have regrowth of about 2 months although mine is more white than grey.

Great video, and mesmerising scenery! I have been dyeing my hair for 30 years, stopped May 2020. My skin has cool undertones and the silver I have is much more flattering than the dark brown I was trying to recreate...it just looked harsh in the end. Now my face is beginning to be framed with steely coloured hair which I love. Cold turkey and another 18 months to go but I'm determined... now noticing lots of other women (and men!) doing the same. Thanks for your advice and support😃

A friend of mine has the most beautiful grey hair. She has been Grey since her 30's. One of the things that's most noticeable is the shine. Her hair stylist uses a salt & pepper, low lights & highlights, then puts on a gloss. She looks fantastic. I myself will probably never go grey I have thin hair. Since my hair damages easily with constant coloring, I never use a lift anymore. I just use a deposit toner. Anything more than 10 volume hurts my scalp and makes my hair break off. Usually I only use a 5 volume. Thank you Justin for sharing such beautiful scenery. You are so talented with your videography.

I just got done growing it out and love it. Nature gives us the color we need! I went cold turkey after one last bleach bath to lift some of my old dye and soften the demarcation line, but over time it all just sort of faded out. I used overtone or artic Fox in violet shades or a purple shampoo to Ash out the blorange. I never did the big chop, I just owned the process. And I've had more compliments on my hair over the last 2+ years than I ever had when I was coloring it. If I'm out shopping I get at least one compliment a day. My son's stylist can't stop raving about it. I chose cold turkey because I was over the time, upkeep, money, and damage. I just recently cut it to a just at the shoulders bob and now sport 100% pure natural mostly salt and some pepper hair. I've kicked up my lipsticks for a boost and even my eyeglass frames. It's been the most freeing thing I've ever done. I've been every color and every length and this is the best thing I've ever done for myself. I'm 53 and have zero regrets.

I've done it all, but my hair is nearly all silver now. I've done 'low lights', 'all over' color and everything in between over the years. I had 'all over' done about 4-5 months ago and ended up not liking it, so since it's all grown out now and it's just the white, I think it washes my face out, so I'm having some low lights done next week. I like the depth and dimension it gives and it's my favorite, because, like you said, you only have to do it about twice a year. Great video helping someone figure out what they want!

I had sudden hairloss after losing 30 lbs on a keto diet. More than half of my hair fell out within about 7-8 weeks. Ive been grey since 24, eventually became allergic to every dye I tried. I am 67. I was using hairprint for the last 7 yrs. I also had burning & itching of my scalp during the last 2 applications. This means that I feel I have no choice but to stop using any kind of hair colorant. Another great video with lots of information - thanks, Justin! One thing you didn't address was the fact that many people going gray will need to start toning their hair to prevent brassiness/yellowing. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this! I, myself, am used to colouring my hair red since 16, but have decided to go natural since March 2020/COVID. My natural colour is tri-colour with definite bits of auburn but lots of ashy dirty blond as well now. I do now have two gorgeous half-inch-wide streaks of white (one on each side of my face) that I love, and although I'm one of those once-a-year-haircuts kind of gal, I definitely need a new do and am thinking of cutting off a lot of it....What a major milestone for any woman...but somehow empowering at the same time! :)

Haven't watched videos in a while and so glad I ran across this one. I am currently doing the transition from medium brown to grey "white". I tried the salt and pepper when I was 40 and it looked really bad so I continued to color up to this year. I'm now 64 and each time I had it colored less and less of the grey was being covered and I needed to have my hair redone by the third week so I decided it was time to go natural. To help keep it from looking so bad I pull my hair up and it looks salt and pepper instead of the grey roots screaming "look at me." I took your suggestion and not only did I order a wig in the color you mentioned (mixed dark and light) I also picked a hair style I would love to wear, that may be a mistake after watching your face shape video. Either way I will continue to watch your videos and enjoy the great views of Oregon you give us. Thanks so much for all of your hard work in helping us make better decisions when it comes to our hair.

Hi Justin, just found your channel today and the first video I stumbled upon was on gray hair 😊 I was raven black since I remember and found my first gray hair at the age of 12, my dad was silvery white since his last 30s. I started coloring at the age of 18 and stopped 4 years ago, Jan 2 and never regretted this decision. People have been complimenting on the color and strangers kept asking me what color do I wear. I was also toId I look 10 years younger and softer 😊 My hair is silver with darker gray at the back, I'm also cool skin type so gray works just fine.I had to stop wearing some colors I used to wear but that's about l I had to sacrifice 😊 I encourage everyone to go for it 😍

In the last year I have been using professional color at home to cover the gray only, which frame my face... last month I decided I was done coloring my outgrowth every 2 weeks. Instead I have been using shades eq toner to blend the grays and because it’s a Demi color it fades out gradually. No line of demarcation. I do miss my highlights/lowlights because now I feel I lack that dimension I once had but at 50 I’m just not about that salon visit every 6 weeks....

Love your video and the encouragement you give to us new silver foxes, Which is now how I refer to myself. I did not have a plan when I went gray silver. Covid forced me to reassess as I didn’t want to keep dying my hair at home to chocolate brown. I was having to dye every 3-4 weeks to get rid of what I called the snowy sprinkles. The gray strip that grows out when you have dark hair really ages you so dyeing regularly must be done. Anyway, I was very lucky. In three months my hair lightened on the ends and the gray and silver grew out so beautifully. I cut my hair short on top of all that in this cute spiky style. I felt like for the first time I was as close to platinum blonde as I was ever going to get. The thing is I got stopped in the street almost every day with people asking me how did I get my hair this way. I have a white strip in the front that is just super cool. The thing I struggle with as a single 60 year old woman is feeling old: I think…am I cool am I beautiful do men find this attractive? Then I remember: I find me attractive and I feel bold and fun. I still get double takes all the time as my look is striking to have this beautiful silver hair and my young looking face. Plus I’m always wearing a smile and that adds to the attractiveness of any woman. Yes I do have those panic moments when I think oh no I should go back and then I put on a brown wig and say what was I thinking? I haven’t 100% embraced it as it is bold and sometimes scary, but I am 92% there and loving it. I agree with the comments why not try it and if you don’t like it you can go back. Mine was such a wonderful surprise. I feel blessed as I hardly have to do anything to my hair now but Want to say one thing that is most important is to get a really good cut and work with your stylist until you are there.

When I transitioned to grey from my dyed red hair it was simple. My hair stylist put in low lights, and streaks in the red colour. The grey came in without the roots being obvious at all.

I bought a hair topper that made the transition so easy! It covered the gray roots (I was a brunette) and I was never self conscious.

Those waterfalls are spectacular - there's just something about water! I enjoyed your tips as well as the comments below. A friend of mine just allowed her hair to go grey naturally. She looks quite similar to the lady in the photo, she has big eyes, great bone structure and a nice shaped head, so she has it cut very close to her head - I think they call that an urchin cut? She's about 70 now and she still looks amazing! I mentioned the shape of her head because I think that makes a difference when you're choosing a hair style. Would you agree with that?

I’ve used henna and indigo for about 20 years so gotta go the slow road. I have sort of a shag/mullet with short braids. (My own crazy signature ‘do!). I’m about 4 months in and it’s just starting to look like I’ve put myself out to pasture lol. I’m planning on sticking with it to see how I like it (I think I will!) then maybe getting some low lights eventually once the henna is grown out.

I have never been regular with coloring my hair and I get the kind that fades away over several weeks ( semi permanent?) so roots aren’t a big deal. Covid has done 2 things for my hair....allowed me to grow it quite a lot and to let the grey start to come in. But why are the greys so kinky when the rest of my hair is stick straight?
@justinhickox
@justinhickox 3 года назад
That’s great that Covid helps you get to a place of more length. Good question regarding the hair texture. I honestly don’t know why that happens but it’s not uncommon at all. Many times the gray texture is very different then your pigmented color hair texture.

Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I find it incredibly frustrating that stylists (the ones I’ve seen) are too quick to dismiss concerns I have about my grays! I really appreciate the information you shared and just wanted to let you know. The biggest concern for me right now is the contrast between the coolness of the grays against the warmth in the lower sections. My hair was dark brown for so many years and as I’ve gotten older the maintenance required is exhausting not to mention damaging to my hair! Within 1.5 to 2 weeks inevitably was finding I had a nice white/silver streak at my roots like a skunk! Last fall I had a LOT of highlights that was severely damaging and has left me with more of a light reddish brown hue. Couple the bleach damage with hormonal changes that include significant amounts of shedding, I’m not “in love” with my hair anymore. Anyway...I found it refreshing that your video addressed things my local stylists haven’t been able to do. Thank you!

I've been letting my salt-and-pepper hair grow since June 2020 because my hair stopped holding color at all. It's long enough for a short haircut, but I like shoulder-length, so I have another year to go. In the meantime, I'm wearing wigs (which are much more attractive than battleship grey!). I may never stop wearing wigs, actually. Maybe if I can get some silver or white. For now, I think the mostly-pepper look is not pretty.

I have lots of dark hair, I'm 67 and I have grey growing out at the temples more and more. I hate the bronze that is in my brown. I experimented alot to get the grey more striking. Watched a video of a girl that said take a Demi, Blue Black(wash out 28 shampoos, not permanent) just a little, and add shampoo and shampoo to it and wash your hair. Dont leave in too long. It works as a purple shampoo but much better. I love it. What is your opinion of this???? I only do this maybe once every 2-3 weeks. Thank you

Hi Justin. I live in Portland too. Multnomah falls rocks! I have been dye free for 4 years. I was actually disappointed it wasn’t more gray! Lol. I am 62 and about 40 to 50% gray, the rest is medium to light brown. Some days it looks great, with natural highlights. It depends on the cut (duh) and my last cut was too short of a Bob with too many wrong layers for my fine hair with medium to heavy density and inconsistent wave which just makes it stubborn. I prefer to blow straight but it eventually curls up in odd places. Too high maintenance. So growing it back out to just below chin and will get layers corrected to long layers instead of wrong layers. Lol. But I toy with adding highlights to help brighten my complexion. Is that sound and if so should I go for lighter gray/white or ash blonde?

This was a good video. However the chemicals in hair dye can be dangerous if used over a long period. An important fact to consider. I grew out my gray in my early 50s and don’t regret it at all. It would have been a constant battle with touching up roots if I hadn’t.
@justinhickox
@justinhickox 2 года назад
You’re not wrong, however that is totally dependent on what brand of color, what type of color, how said color is being applied etc. Aside from the fact that companies are constantly changing color formulas and they’re getting better and better over the years with regards to their ingredients.

My hair is naturally a med brown with a bit of brassiness. My grey hair had been coming in and within the very my hair is also growing out a really dark brown. What type of coloring, from a pro, would I ask to get so that I can just let it grow out without lining flat? I normally color a reddish brown.

Both look nice but the coloured hair looks way younger. Badly coloured hair is aging and unstylish but going grey is aging. No question.
@justinhickox
@justinhickox 3 года назад
I think it depends on how you define aging/useful. To me looking youthful doesn’t mean a specific age. It means looking vibrant and alive/awake at whatever age you are. So in my opinion, gray hair can absolutely look useful. And in many ways if done right I believe it can look more useful than colored hair. It just depends on the situation. But I do understand your point.

Interesting that you yourself have grey hair…doesn’t seem to be low lighted, highlighted, etc. You don’t seem to be so concerned….
@justinhickox
@justinhickox 2 года назад
This is true. I mainly don’t have lowlights because my hair is so short and it typically has enough dimension when I put product in it. With that said, I’m not saying people HAVE to have color (or follow any of my tips for that matter). I’m simply giving people ideas of what they CAN do.
