Awesome video. Next time at the grocery store, I gotta buy an Asian pear and a Good Ol’ American pear, and decide which kind to plant this spring! Thank you for the education.

I planted 3 pears . The varieties are Hood , Pineapple and Flordahome . They have been in the ground for one growing season and at Christmas 2022 we had some very cold weather for our standards and then for last two weeks it’s been 70-80 degree weather here in the South Georgia/ North Florida area . They are low chill varieties and one of them is starting to flower in early January which is too early really . I think that may be the only negative aspect of the lower chill varieties but we have to have lower chill varieties here .

I have an Asian pear that I got from tractor supply in the spring. I put it full sun and it was putting on some lovely growth, then I had a baby. My partner slacked off on watering 😮‍💨 I haven't given up on it. Trimmed it all back and have been deep watering every couple of days 🙏 it comes back

So many pears have perished at my property. Usually they go black from the tips down the trunk. I have tried in the sun, and the shade. I am ready to try again though!

My pear tre3 is one of the fruit trees that survived the Texas 2020 freeze I’ve had it for about 7 years last year I trimmed it very heavy and it still gave lots of fruit but when the fruit was still about 2 inches very very hard the squirrels cleared the whole tree out. I don’t know what type it is but it’s the hard pear I really want a softer fruit I will definitely get another

Out here on the Western edge of the Mojave in California near Barstow. Zone 8B. I think we get a few more chill hours than you but just as hot and dry. Any suggestions on varieties that may work best?

They put up Bartlett's in most of the big box stores. They'll put on a lot of growth per year but that's about it. I have yet to try some of the asian varieties but I'd be really interested to see what you've discovered in regards to types that do well in pots. In the Vegas valley area 9b the common idea around is that any kind of stone fruit and similar genetics will just catch fire and die during July. Or just not set fruit due to poor climate and monsoon winds. If there's a variety out there that's self fertile, can handle the wind, the heat and will take to any soil even potting medium that would be huge for growers here since we share a lot of the same varieties and techniques with our Arizona brethren.

@@ArizonaFruitTrees A lot of local home owners will have or attempt at least one or more. Figs especially. Myer Lemons. And Pomegranates. And Kumquats are the top 4 here. Gilcrease farm is a local orchard, and the only one I've seen successfully grow tons of red apple trees. Caveat being. Most of their trees are at least 8+ years old and they suck down enough water to fill a couple city pools. All of them growing in what looks damn near like silt. But in ground. Pears is a new one I've never heard of actually survive in these climates. But we have a lot of enthusiasts out here trying to beat these martian like desert climates. Your channel, Growingyourgreens, LV Fig and Garden, and Edge of Nowhere Farms are some of the only channels I've seen put up real world results for our region. California based channels dominate our ethos too much where growers here will try to utilize stuff that grows well in california, but then forget.... This ain't California...

@@ArizonaFruitTrees So uhhhh....I got the 21st century Asian pear...and its growing out of control. Hasn't even been 6 months on about an inch Diameter trunk. And theres been about 3 feet of growth on a single branch horizontally. Its taking full las vegas sun in a nursery pot I painted the outside white. Uhhh....this thing is kinda scary, do you have any pruning guides? Its definitely the strongest plant I've ever come across for this climate but uhhh....holy hell...

@@andromedadelux it may not fruit well, 20th cent, which makes them grow bigger and faster because they have no fruit to slow them down

Jay, i bought one of the Tennesoui from you last year and it looks great in my west facing front yard. It blossomed but the fruit didnt set which is perfect for its first year in ground but it really looks great even after several very windy days this spring (which likey blew the blossoms off). You never steered me wrong. Since it should kind of taste like pear apple cross, I've been looking forward to my first pear(/apple) pie. It does have a sucker and I'm wondering if you know the rootstock since im considering either growing it or using it for rootstock for grafting? I imagine I'll be up there for mango trees before too long since this pear and the Shang-mulberry will be their tier one. Thanks for all your great knowledge and videos. (Zone9A)

OK, so you tell us that pears are a Tier 1 fruit. Then you say that there are 10 varieties that grow in your region. Then you tell us not to listen to anyone else because they aren't as smart as you. I watched all 33 minutes and you only named 1 of the 10 varieties, which is commonly known to be one of the worst tasting pears. WTF?!? I want my 33 minutes back.
