Man seems like a lot of work! I threw my pecans into my compost pile and forgot about em. A few months later I had roots a few feet long. Transplanted them into pots and now little trees are coming through
I have successfully grown pecans from nuts, but I noticed pecan saplings are super sensitive to Texas sun. What schedule of sun time should we use to get them adjusted and adapted to the sun so their leaves don’t turn brown?
You're smart to plan ahead like that. I've considered doing the same but running this operation alone gets pretty overwhelming at times. I leave so many unharvested that they germinate on their own. I've considered digging them up, potting them then selling them when they got a couple feet tall. For now, and the last ten years, I have just been mowing them. At times I wonder how many millions of dollars I have mowed lol.
I didn’t have to put my acorn seeds in the refrigerator. They started growing after I soaked for 24 hours in water. They started growing in Dec. I am repotting them but how do we get them adapted to our Texas sun? Even in late winter the Texas sun makes them cook. How do we get them adapted to the sun?
@@HeritageFarmsTexas later on when I want to plant them on property how do we do that? Only plant in shady areas? How long will it be until they are tolerant to the sun? Pecan orchards are out in the open. So confusing as to what age pecan saplings can begin to be conditioned for full Texas sun. Thank you for replying back. ☺️
Awesome video buddy I have 300 hundred trees on five acres hoping to plant more I do this for my two little girls just bought 24 acres hoping to be able to plant it
i just rooted PECAN IN ABOUT 30 DAYS no fridgeration i nicked the tip of the pecan with a blade then placed the pecan in a small tube about 8 inchs high 2 in dia filled with top soil wet it good just cover the nut with some soil wet it several times out come a fat white root changed to a larger container now i green shoot is showing this is in an unheated garage my first pecan to root. i forgot to mention i soaked the nut several days to soften it you can see the shell start to crack the i put it in soil
Frank Davidson - outstanding. I’m learning there is several ways to do it. I think the squirrels have it perfected. We will start stratification in a couple of weeks. We will be using the Oklahoma Stste University guidelines. Future video on the way.
I'm actually starting to grow pecan trees and I got the idea after finding a few in my garden from soil I got from my father. Didnt know what they were. Did some research. Now I want to have a farm. Trees were my childhood here in texas so I'm going to continue for my kids and the rest of my family!
Hello Kaci, thanks for watching. Really appreciate it. We planted them for the same reason, part of my childhood and I wanted a legacy for the future. Good luck
I saw the flag up and flying this morning. I missed it. Now I can tell which way the wind is blowing again. Were doing OK,thanks. I guess the upcoming wedding is your next fire drill. Take care
Awesome. A couple things: 1. Great idea for a revenue stream and 2. I'm impressed you could count to 50😁 I learned a lot watching this video. We have talked about pecan trees here. Maybe we'll do it one day. If we do, im calling you!
Michele Dry - thanks for stopping by our channel. So happy to have you here. I love Georgetown. There is some beautiful country around there. If I was starting over, it would be somewhere around Georgetown.
Excellent. You should start with purchasing a book for Texas A&M on the subject. You should also check out the Nobel Foundation in OK. They have a lot of info as well. These are the two sources we used to get started.
i am still having luck with rooting pecans just put in 1 gal pot good soil keep it wet 10 weeks average they sprout once they sprout they grow fast with 3 -4 leaves i switch to 3 gal pot as needed then they are ready to plant in yard i do this as a hobby (small scale )
The Drifter - we planted the trees in 2013 and this year we got a five gallon bucket full. Not much, damn crows and squirrels got the most of them. Every year, we are getting more and more. They say at maturity, we could see 75-100lbs per tree.
just a tip for anyone wanting to root pecans (seeds) it takes about 10/12 weeks in the damp soil for some to sprout i had about given up but here the come little sprouts pop out of the soil they are about 12 ins tall now 4-2-20 two and three leaves so dont give up just use plain top soil.
David Leal - thanks for watching. You can. The old days they would place 3-5 pecans in a hole and see what happened. Sometimes zero, sometimes 1-2. The method we are using is based off the guidelines of OSU. In our approach, you will have nice strong container grown trees all uniform in size. (Hopefully). Haha.
I recently started following your channel and i am interested in growing pecan trees. I had ordered a pecan tree (bareroot) and a few weeks ago i had to cut part of it down as it was dead and sprouts came out. I am wondering if i can grow it out and maybe use the pecan nuts to use for the rootstock. (Btw I had to cut below the graft). I'd appreciate any insight. Thanks in advance
Just couldn’t listen/watch with the music in the background. Why mess up an otherwise good video with annoying, distracting and unnecessary music competing against the info you are providing?
I can actually grow them I was just trying graft some I have a lot of non-producing hickories and my good producing hickories only produce good once every three years at the most
QUESTION? We have at least 30 native pecan trees, most are very large trees, I am not sure about the number of trees. They usually make a lot of small pecans. Some years more than others. Do the small pecans have any value? We do use some of them ourselves and they taste great. And if we started managing the trees like spray them and water and whatever else they need will the pecans get larger? Thanks
Hello, They sound like native pecan trees. The pecans should taste just fine, but they will not get bigger. You might produce more, but the size will not change. Guessing the shell is pretty thick on them also. Positive note, they’re very durable, drought resistant. Cold hardy. That’s why the nurseries graft improved varities to native root stocks. All of my trees were grafted to native root stock.
@@HeritageFarmsTexas Thanks, most of the trees are at least 70 years old and produce a lot, didn't know if they would be worth trying to sell the pecans/harvesting commercially.
👋 hey I’m interested in buying a few trees from you. Guess I’ll have to subscribe to keep in touch. Not far from you we are in the Houston area. Where & when can we order?
Hi brother , I am from Algeria , I bought a pecan seeds thinking its cacao seeds , they look the same , i wanna grow them does the climat good in Algeria for Pecans , thank you and big hi to all Texas
i agree with everyone elses opinion . great educational. i did my first 4 flap graft of a native tree. 3 more week till i know if it took. i remember when i was in my 20s i went to a tree farm and they had a tree with 6 different varieties on 1 tree. im going to try to do the same. sir when is the latest you can plant seeds? last but not least i have pecans can i store them now to plant next spring?
if you have 8 acres of pecan trees would it not quicker to use the air layering method { in 90 days or less you can have 3 ft rooted plant) of excact copy with seed you dont know what you end up with the dna is in the tree not the seeds good luck
Frank Davidson thanks for watching, I appreciate your feedback. We have a 8 acre orchard (150 trees). We are trying to figure out how to grow trees for sale. We are using native pecan trees for root stock and will graft improved varieties to them in the future. We are learning daily and by no means experts. Appreciate your input.
the bad part about going with seeds is about 10 years to fruiting on the pecan tree and you still dont know what you what you will get the dna is not in the nut its in the tree so the quickest way i think will be with air layering a limb if it roots you have a 2 yr old tree instaid of a sprout. hope this helps some one
Frank Davidson - absolutely correct. My plan is to graft them down the road. We use native pecan trees as seeds for strong hardy zone tolerant seed stock. Then graft papershell varieties from there. Thanks for watching.
do you ever have to check them in the refrigerator or give them air or can you for forget them til spring.??????? will 3 year old seed still germinate?????? been in a closet in the house
Hello, I’m not sure about three year old seed. You do not have to check them in the refrigerator until spring. It’s basically simulating them being in the ground during the winter.
