Quince is a deciduous fruit tree that resembles pear and bears a bright golden-yellow fruit when mature. The nutritious fruit has been cooked since ancient times. With heat, the fruit is transformed to a savory rich treat!
It’s beautiful. I love making preserve. I found an old abandoned house in the country with lots of them. It’s just awesome. The perfume. And how the preserve tastes.
I have 2 of this Smyrna quince growing in southern California, just out side of Los Angeles. they are tasty and yes with little tartness. It makes excellent pies. could be mixed with apples or just quince pie. delicious.
You are welcome! The quince is undemanding. I irrigate my mature quince like my Anna apple and apply about 28 gallons of water a week in peak summer. For fruit, you want to preserve one-year-old wood so I usually prune lightly in winter and remove any unwanted crossing/weak growth and shape. I can definitely do a pruning video this winter and discuss care but it's very hardy and fuss-free.
I encountered Quince for the first time about 2 years ago, a green variety, and what was so amazing was the smell! I'd never smelled anything as gorgeous. Was that the same for your variety? And have your grafted varietals born any fruit?
The best quince comes from an area near Isfahan in central Iran called Gortoon quince. The fruit is very fuzzy with an amazing mild but covering fragrance. Just leaving a few of these quinces on a shelf in a room it's like if you sprayed that room with the wonderfull fragrance for weeks.
😇 Aromatnaya is Best 😇 Picked yellow n ripe, I eat it like an apple. Also peeled n chunked in a pot with a bit of brown sugar @ very low heat for a few hours till like a pie filling, then pour it still warm over vanilla ice cream. Truly it Tastes like HEAVEN.
Wonderful to see this! I’m in the Phx area, too, and would love to plant a quince tree but am worried about sun exposure. Where is your’s planted? Does it need afternoon shade or filtered light?
Hi! My tree is planted 8' from my south wall so it gets sun all day. At least my experience with the Smyrna variety of quince is that it handles the intense Arizona sun in the Valley here. Even last year, it had no burn to the leaves. It should be fine to plant it in full sun given you mulch the tree and water appropriately.
Good stuff, growing pineapple quince in South Gilbert, planted bare root in early 2017, already have about 5 I'm waiting for them to be ripe. I thought when they fell off the tree is when they where ripe?
I have no experience growing them or know if they'll take our Summers. You may want to check the local fruit tree forums to see if anyone has tried them. It looks like they may need some chill hours/cooler zone like 8 to do well. leafnetworkaz.org/Sys/PublicProfile/30032986/3847197
Are you certain that you are growing a fruiting variety of Cydonia oblanga? Ther is another type of quince that is ornamental ( Chaenomeles x superba ) and won't set fruit. If you are growing a fruiting variety, flower drop can happen if pollination is not good. You may want to attract pollinators in with a nearby flowering plant that blooms at the same time as quince. If nothing else, you could graft the branch of a productive quince on to your tree. That will guarantee fruit.
Quince is fairly slow growing. The tree in the video is large because I bought a 15 gallon size. It will take a couple years for your tree to put on size and start fruiting.
