For all of you talking about how expensive this is, think about not having these things at the grocery store. You’re buying pots once if you don’t have ground to plant in and you can use natural fertilizers made from your eggshells, banana peels and Epsom salts. Lots of ways to do it in a less expensive way, but I appreciate Gary’s expertise as we have struggled with blossom end rot and powdery mildew in our area. Following the tips has given me much more confidence and success.

My husband added a PVC worm tower in each of my large containers that I fill with food scraps & shredded (uncolored) paper every week because castings are amazing fertilizer. I was very excited when I found my first worm in one of my containers! Lol! The worms came up through the holes in the bottom of my planters that sit on the ground.

Hey Gary, very interesting you used a different soil composition than you did for your peppers and tomatoes (garden soil & peat moss 50/50...plus fertilizer). But, I don't think you explained why you used the shredded wood on the bottom, or more organic matter in this zucchini soil mix. Is it something in how they feed or need water that is different than peppers and tomatoes?
@valeriechin1685
@valeriechin1685 6 лет назад
15-20 gallon Wood chips inch above hole Sprinkle organic fertilizer 6-8 tablespoons and mix in so to help wood chips break down over time Too soil an inch atop of wood chips Another 2-4 tablespoons of fertilizer Handful of garden Lyme good handful Worm castings 1 cup in top soil mix it in Container mix from old plants mix into top soil Leaf grow atop of all this and mix it in Another cup of worm castings *One cup per five gallons approximate More container mix, mix it up Cucumbers, zucchinis, melons, squash will thrive in this Shredded hardwood as a cover so it locks together and it wont wash away since it's so fibrous. Keeps moisture in here Now water it and soak it in And you're done! (With the planting at least)

PLEASE REMEMBER TO REMIND PEOPLE TO NOT GET ANY ORGANIC FERTILIZER THAT COMES FROM OR THE MANAFACTOR IS CLOSE TO ANY SEWAGE TREATMENT PLANT.. IN MY CITY, THE CITY BOUGHT THE LOCAL FERTILIZER COMPOSTING PLANT, AND NOW WE HAVE SOME HUMAN WASTE IN THE NATURAL COMPOST. IT'S HARDER AND HARDER TO GET ANIMAL FERTILIZER ANYMORE. AS PEOPLE DON'T FARM ANYMORE. . AND THAT KIND OF FERTILZER WAS ONLY SCOOPED UP IN THE BIG FEED. LOTS , CORALS OR. AUCTION YARDS. FARMERS ONLY DRAG THEIR FEILDS, ON THE NATURAL GROUND. ( I HOPE YOU CAN UNDERSTAND WHAT I'M TRYING TO SAY. ) NOW YOU MIGHT BE WONDERING WHY THAT IS IMPORTANT. WELL ANIMALS LIKE COWS ,HORSES, RABBITS, CHICKENS, ETC.. EAT PLANTS MOSTLY, AND THEIR STOMACKS DIGGEST, THIS. BETTER, ( WITH CHICKENS THEY HAVE GIZZARDS) ANYWAYS. HUMAN WASTE. HAS. SO. MUCH. BAD. BACHTERA AND OTHER THINGS THAT DON'T GET BROKE DOWN, AND PASSES THROUGH INTO THE VEGTABLES AND THEN AGAIN GET PASSED ON TO YOU , IN THE FORM OF DISEASES, ETC... WHY DO MOST PEOPLE ASK FOR COWS AND SHEEP , FERTILIZER, THEY HAVE 2 STOMACHS AND THINGS GET DIGGESTED BETTER.. OK, NOW YOU ARE GOING TO SAY WELL THE ASIANS HAVE USED THEIR OWN WASTE FOR YRS. WELL THAT MAYBE TRUE IN THE PAST. WHEN WE DIDN'T LIVE IN A MODERN WORLD AND THEY ATE ONLY NATURAL HOME MADE THINGS AND HUNTED AND COOKED WHAT THEY GREW. THAT HASN'T BEEN TRUE FOR A CENTURY. AND HUMAN WASTE REALLY I. BELIEVE ISN'T SAFE.. OUR AIR AND WATER ISN'T WHAT IT USED TO BE. P.S. LOVE. THE. VIDEO.. GREAT. IDEAS AND. HELPFUL.. VERY. VERY. HELPFUL.

Hey Gary,. My wife thinks I'm crazy for believing everything I see on RU-vid, but certain things do work. Last year I had good soil for my toms and squash, but a bit depleted having been used for some heavy feeder plants. It was given to me instead of being dumped in a landfill. Lucky me, huh? This year I will replenish it with additives and amendments for my hard won seedlings to grow in. She gets all her gardening information from people's opinions from Facebook, not actual doing any practical stuff, just the way they think grandma might have done it decades ago. The proof is in the plants, not conjecture or "opinion". Thanks my friend, for all the valuable info. Good stuff. Now if I can find some 5-5-5 fert. I've mostly used "all purpose" MG (24 nitrogen) but maybe not this year. I'll use garden gypsum around my toms to prevent BER like I did last year that seemed to work well. Cheers, Bob
@HATINTHEKAT
@HATINTHEKAT 2 года назад
You can definitely revitalize that depleted soil! You can keep it really simple or you can get really technical with it, I add peat moss to fluff the soil back up so it won’t compact, a little bit of new or leftover potting mix that hasn’t been used yet, compost, worm castings to add good bacteria and soil life, then a good, balanced, Organic granular fertilizer, like Lilly Miller 10-10-10 all purpose granular fertilizer or Pennington 10-10-10, I think they’re the same product, or something balanced from jobes organics, or espoma, dr earth, etc, they all work very well when given in the correct amounts, then I water it all with an organic liquid fertilizer at like a 1/4-1/2 strength to get nutrients in there quickly and help start that soil life and breakdown of nutrients, and mix it really well. It’s a lot easier than it sounds, plus I have all these things on hand anyways. If you really wanna get fancy you can also add some blood meal, bone meal, and/or a form of soluble potash to tailor the renewed soil for whatever you plan to grow it in, sorry for the long winded reply, I hope this helps you or someone reading this lol

I did a test last year with Worm casings fertilizer VS aged organic chicken manure,,,, The chicken manure beat it hands down,,, best production I have ever had with the garden especially the Tomatoes and the Squash,,,, also used a little Molasses and Ebsons salt,,,,, very cheap and great alternatives,,,

Its reassuring to see you doing this. Due to 2 situations I'm growing over 50% in containers this year. My Amish sawmill cut wood never got cut on time, they have great prices and wood and the secret got out lol. So I had to start growing in containers and I have so many woodchips I've been doing this because containers can eat up a huge batch of soil mixture in no time. I'm also experimenting with my usual straw mulch and woodchips, so far no difference even carrots came through the woodchips. I get more weeds from the straw its still not much.

Yes, I drill some holes on bottom & around the bigger pots , even in 10 gallon or 5 gallon i make sure to drill holes on bottom & sides as you dont want any plants to get wet feet .... I learned so much from gary the last almost 2 years , even though im 56yrs old and have gardened since I was a child living with my Grandma & father in Alabama when I was young ( they both had big plots of gardens ) But finally learned this past January how to make our own transplants , Especially with the prices so CRAZY . We finally get to taste all kinds of different varieties of old time Tomatoes , peppers , eggplants - the ping tung 18 inch long ones from bakers creek , So many different veggies , Thank goodness I bought all my heating mats in December & shop lights Gary suggests i got at wally world for only $18.98 5,000 lumes LED - now i can reuse them year after year and save my seeds also , as even seeds have went up . Millions of people started growing gardens last yr bcause of C - but this year alot more are starting gardens due to prices of everything , luckily I purchased everything in December and January , As transplantes here in Montgomery County , Texas are going for $7.98 for 1 tomato plant $ $5.98-$9.98 for 1 pepper plant , my basil, Lavender, dill , rosemary which they are selling little bitty bonnie cups for $4.88 are only 1/4 my size , plus started more herbs & flowers which im having another plant sale next weekend , i had veggie sale for our community $2 a plant and gave alot away to help people and told them to watch Gary at the Rusted garden so they learn when to water, fertilize and start their next crops come in August as it gets so hot here ... Have a great harvest this year especially . Mrs Josette Tharp Montgomery County , Texas 🙏🏻

Gary, have you ever tried the GroBucket insert for self watering 5 gallon bucket? Just drill hole in bucket and insert it and then your done. I am wondering if a zucchini can grow in this if I topped it off each day, since it is self watering. Will the plant not grow to that large of a size because the container would be too small? I'm sure with this self watering container I could keep it hydrated at least.

Hi Gary, I'm doing a few watermelon in large totes and a 20 gallon pot this year. I'm wondering about vine management once they really get going and what to do with the fruit. It would be much easier to let the vines go along the ground etc...but would you recommend taking them vertically would you use a tomato cage? Is this necessary?

Your math is off. Those brands of soil, leaf compost, woodchip, are all $2 to $4 in my area. And one bag is enough to fill a few pots. I've gotten most of my pots for free over the years. And anyone who's grown zucchini knows you get way WAY more fruit than you'd expect off one plant. Organic zucchini goes for a couple dollars per in my local stores. So it's really more like a $10 investment per pot for at least $50 return. Plus seeds for next year, off a lineage of plants acclimating to your yard and growing habits.

Hahaha this is good information but I already planted mine with bags of organic garden bed soil in grow bags. Next year I’ll try this.

Gary, I really like your video. Please tell me where I can purchase a watering can like yours? I’m going to try this. My cukes are in the main garden in a row. (Husband row cropped all his life). I have a kitchen container garden. Never thought about trying clues in pots!

Every year I plant melons. I've yet to get one ripe. Rodents eat ALL of them!! Do you have any suggestion?

Cover the plants with a hard plastic cover, vented with holes....like a mini-green house.

Which one was the best yielding on this experiment The worm castings, the fish emulsion or the chemical feritlizer???
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN 3 года назад
Chem look best at the end. But fish emulsion did well too. Casting was nothing to sneeze at. If you are experimenting with various fertilizers, shouldn't you plant the same plants to compare?

So, would you completely duplicate this process next year or would you just recondition a portion of this container?
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN 4 года назад
Recondition with some granular fert the 2nd year. Maybe a few scoops of peat. Not much.
