I grew up growing flowers next door to my grandma... wishing now that I would have paid more attention to how she did everything 🌻 Thanks for teaching us here and helping me fill in the gaps of knowledge. I've followed you now for years and it's great to see how you've grown into making really warm videos! Bravo!!

Thank you for the detailed instructions on growing stock seeds and seedlings. I really appreciate that you explain the temperature requirements, as I live in subtropical Australia and knowing the germination temperature really helps me succeed with these beautiful flowers. I am only growing in my home garden.

Thank you for doing this series of videos on growing various seeds for cooler climates. I find it SO incredibly helpful and t's hard to find this type of info for those of us in Northern Climates!

Your explanations are so useful for planting flowers at scale. In 2023 I am relying mainly on your videos to guide my 4th year of gardening. I will be starting 600-1000 plants from seed, and also will be transplanting perennials like lavender and echinacea purpurea that I over-wintered from last year. Thank you always!

Just found your channel. Thank you for providing such good detailed instructions. This will be my first year growing stock from seed. NOT my first year seed starting. Usually just grow veggies.

I've been watching gardening channels ALL winter and I don't know why the common sense of replanting duplicate sprouts in the ungerminated cells didn't occur to me or get mentioned anywhere else, but thank goodness I saw this video 😅

In Florida it gets hot fast! I started seeds last year late in February and germination was really good but never got to bloom!! I plan to start them in fall this year!!

Such a helpful video! I’m a home gardener in Z3 , first time Katz grower, and looks like next week is go-time. It feels crazy to be planing out seedlings so early. Even though daytime temps are ideal, and hard frosts are less, the ground temps are still very cold. We’ll see how it goes!

Great video and thanks for the tip to surface sow stock! As you said, the seed packets say to cover. I sowed lots in soil blocks and got great germination. I sowed in cell packs too but not so great germination because I covered them!

I'm so glad you shared the "surface sow method" for stock 🪻 It works great for me, as well! I think Antique Pink is my favorite, but I love them all 💗

Started 9 stock inside with my other stuff. Plants are yellowed, tiny, etc. I can't imagine it's too warm. Lost 3. Super weird. Maybe it's the seed but otherwise, IDK. Putting them outside with the snaps early in case they like it.

This was really great info, wish you had uploaded when you were sowing. I didn't get any blooms last summer, guessing I may not again. Kind of discouraging thinking I may be wasting seeds, I'm on the shore in Maryland, hot & humid here.
@marykennedy3351
@marykennedy3351 Год назад
This is also why you need to grow early. Stock loves the cool weather, and if it gets over 60° it will not flower.
@itsmewende
@itsmewende Год назад
@@marykennedy3351 I'm sure that was my issue last yr, guessing it will be a repeat for me, but I sowed them today anyway. Funny thing tho, I had one survive this winter...I'm on the shore in Maryland, only had very cold night temps maybe 5 - 7 nights here & there. Noticed I have buds on that one. I don't know if the flowers will be nice, but it's fun to wait an see. Thanks for the comment.
@marykennedy3351
@marykennedy3351 Год назад
@Wende It liked that cool weather.😊 Yeah, I'm secession planting this month, but trying stock past March will most likely get too hot and not flower or be short. It's a tricky one good luck to you.
@itsmewende

@@itsmewende Maryland here, too. I'm thinking this is a very difficult flower for us and I'm going to have to build skills and work up to it. A couple of falls ago, I direct sowed them outside (but not surface sow...). Nothing came up. I know we had a mild winter this year, but we get up to 60 degrees quickly in the spring! I'm just a home gardener, but it looks like it will have to be started inside and then put out in... February??? with cloches going on and off with frost advisories? Definitely have to work up to this. Well we can't have everything, and being able to leave the dahlias in the ground is nice. 🥲

Hi! Thanks for the informative video. Lots of good info. I have a question about planting in succession. What is the reasoning behind doing this with a biennial. Will the plants actually flower at different times next year? What am i missing here. Thanks for your time.

Hi Rose! We plant them 9” apart, but you could also do 6” to increase their stem length.

I have a big question. My daughter is getting married April 26 of 2025. When do I start the seeds to have flowers ready by then? And what other flower I can grow this early to go with it. I am in zone 8a.

You might want to mention your growing zone so people don't plant their's too early in a lower zone. I made that mistake before.

Hi from the southern hemisphere 👋 I’m growing an autumn succession of stock at the moment but I’ve got some very elongated seedlings - they aren’t flopping over or anything and have a strong light source - but they’ve been exposed to some high temps this week so I think that’s the problem. Would you chuck them out and start again or see how they go? Only about a week old.
@PepperHarrow
@PepperHarrow Год назад
They’re probably okay unless the stalk is emaciated.
