This is the first video that was straight to the point and offered excellent advice! I have this oversized organic sweet potato that I wanted to plant but couldn’t find a container large enough to put it in. Answer: cut that bad boy in half lol! Thanks guy
I grew sweet potatoes this year from a potato that had started shooting in the veg rack. It was the Purple variety. I ended up with about 5 potatoes from the 1 plant. Ps it was grown in the greenhouse.
Great video, thank you! I'm originally from the tropics and missing sweet potato green (stir fried with garlic). I tried growing sweet potato last year with no success (even though I live in the SE). I also soaked tubers in water but didn't cut them in half. Next time I'll follow your advice and hope they'll produce a lot more slips and leaves :).
I'm From Philippines currently living now in UK, Sweet Potatoes One of our common rootcrops and my favorite as well, Specially the leaves it's verry healthy since I arrive here I didn't eat the green leaves of the potatoes So I wanted to plant , and this channel verry helfpul and clear explanation..I hope I can grow soon.😊 Thanks xx
Hi, your stem was the first one I watch on sweet potatoes 🍠, I have slips now three was, half sweet potatoes and full in water, and some in damp soil, all have work, but my word it has taken about four months, I have just planted three slips in my poly tunnel and waiting for more slips, I have thoroughly enjoyed watch you, thank you for sharing, I am new at veg growing this April 😅
You are my new guru. I am from Panama and therefore very keen to grow what I can’t find in the supermarkets! My daughter looooves sweet potatoes so will give it a go! Thank you you are a good teacher:)
Such a great video. I've had 6 sweet potatoes on the side for 3 months waiting for me to get round to starting the growing process. You've just given me the extra push to start. ta. Stumbled across it whilst looking for info on how to prune my pomegranate bush that I have from a seed sown from a supermarket fruits 5 years ago. Then also seen your citrus, kiwi, ginger and dragonfruit vids all off which I've got on the go at the mo too here on the English Welsh border. Nice one :-D
Ta. Hopefully I'll have more success than with the coffee. Have tried that 3 times. Got rootlets but never shoots. Won't stop me from trying though :-)
Hi, thank you very much for sharing, I’m from Thailand and I love growing anything from my country but I haven’t tried to grow sweet potatoes yet. I might try to grow some this year ❤️👍
john smith 😂 I don’t think my gardening comes anywhere close to his standard of cooking, nor my use of colourful language! But, I do like to try and think outside the box when it comes to gardening, try new things, and with climate change, altering our seasons, we need to be open to growing different vegetables and fruit. We are able to get hold of more interesting plants now, compared to 10 or 20 years ago, so I do feel we should take advantage of that! Thanks for your comment. All the best. Chris
So many healthy shoots already! Well done on a great job! I have about 5 sweet potatoes suspended whole in water since February. There is just 1 slip which is all of 2 cms,! Plenty of roots though so still hoping I'll have some decent slips for my veggie patch. Thanks for the video.
Harriett Williams I had 4 whole sweet potatoes in water since early February and one cut in half after seeing this video. The halves have produces masses of slips I'm delighted to say in just over 3 weeks! Thanks to this video this cut in half method is what I'll be following. Many thanks again for uploading this video! The purple variety seemed to grow very fast compared to the white and orange flesh sweet potatoes. Will be interesting to hear what others have experienced.
Very well explained and clearly demonstrated, thank you. Like you, my overwintered cuttings had high mortality and I wonder if we should propagate specifically from the survivors for useful increased hardiness in future seasons. Another thought for our northern climes is to grow in black containers that aren’t too big and so increase the growing medium temperature. I’m not sure if you mentioned that any shop bought potatoes are better if organic and hopefully not treated with sprouting inhibitors.
Dalesman I’m all for seed saving and plant propagation from plants that do well in our climate. I do think each generation of seed will have better growing qualities to suite the climate that it has been grown in. My sweet potato’s did really well this year, planted through black plastic. Really nice size tubers. Unfortunately they were attacked by wire worm!🙈 which make lots of little holes. I took cuttings from the plants and so have potted up about 14 plants for next year. Not sure what the variety is but they seem to do well in Suffolk. This years sweet potato harvest is one of my recent videos. Regards. Chris
Thank you! Really clearly explained and demonstrated. I'm going to plant it this spring. I hope I'm not too late: it's still rather cold here. I've bought some sweet potatoes in Israel (it called "batata" there)and kept them all winter for planting.I like sweet potatoes but they dont sell it here. Greetings from Russia))
Sweet potatoes are related to morning glory. I have that morning glory that I keep cutting back so now I have bought seeds for other morning glories (that are heirloom) and also planted hyacinth bean vines that were given to me and want to plant scarlet emperor (similar to runner except semi perennial if I could only find the seeds!) so that the hummingbirds will have a replacement for the morning glory i am trying to purge
Great Vid, thank you yes growing sweet potato slips is actually very easy, the leaves are great in salads. The are also great for Tortoises, Torts often suffer from Vitamin A deficiency, Sweet Potato leaves are very high in Vitamin A. Might be great to mention pet benefits for growing plants indoors in the UK, to reach more audience 😉 Also, I have have success growing shop bought non organic Sweet Potatoes too 😄
Hey how's your sweet potato plant doing? Did you cut it in half? I have a store bought sweet potato plant basically at the same stage yours was at last year! I've just broken off the tall vine with leaves placed Into glass of water. The potato itself has tons of roots coming out of the bottom! Any idea what to do with it now? Should I grow outdoors in UK soil or indoors in a tub? How long does it take until harvest? Do you ever get new tubers when you harvest?
This is so concise. Thank you for sharing this! I’m looking to grow sweet potatoes just for the leaves to use for cooking, as I can’t find them sweet potato tops in any shops around here. Have you any tips on how to care for it so it gives me plenty of healthy leaves? I don’t have a garden so I’m thinking of growing it in a decent-sized pot indoors if that can actually work. Cheers, Mari
I must say, that I appreciate how you got straight to the point, explaining how to start sweet potatoes. I am new to gardening and am excited to learn all I can. However, I am curious about the long thin stringy root like protrusions that are on my sweet potatoes. What are those? Can I still root this potato ? And if so, how? I would be so grateful for any knowledgeable response indeed. Thank you in advance for your response indeed.
Davida DAUSUEL you will need to grow it on until you get the green stem with leaves and roots. This is what you then plant. The sweet potato will probably send out roots first, then the stem.👍🏻
I followed your instructions last year, and I’d successfully grow the slips. The planting was the problem, if I grow in containers, how do you suggest I go about doing so.?🤔
Amazing tutorial I love how you explain each step so clearly. I have 2 store bought sweet potatoes that started to grow stems and leaves but the leaves are tiny, I was told to put the whole potatoes in water with the water coming up to halfway of the potato. They have started growing small roots but now I'm confused as to whether I should cut the potatoes in half. What would you say?

Although they are named as Sweet Potatoes...they are in fact NOT. The Sweet Potato has to be grown year on year from the slips produced as in the vid...hope this helps.
Thanks for your informative video. I'm a new learner wanting to grow sweet potatoes. Do you plant your sweet potatoes outside in a garden bed in the summer? When do you plant them out and when do they mature for harvesting? I live in a cool/cold climate (snows in winter) so I hope I can grow sweet potatoes. It's challenging growing watermelon in my area @ times. Don't have a greenhouse yet. 😮
D E they are planted out in my area around the middle of may, when soil temps are about 17c. They love the heat! So the warmer your summer the better! They are harvested about October/November before the first frosts. I have a video on growing watermelons which may be if use to you as well. All the best. Chris
How have your outdoor citrus, etc, fared this winter? I keep mine in containers (root nurse pots and citrus compost with added charcoal chips, perlite and pumice to improve drainage), so with a watchful eye on the weather, I have managed to dodge the frosty nights and keep them out on milder winter days and nights. They have spent a great deal of time indoors this winter compared to the previous one, mind you!
Gary Card the citrus have certainly taken a bit of a hit this winter, but nothing more than a bit of cosmetic damage. Will be doing a video to discuss how the citrus have dealt with this hard winter soon! All the best Chris
Really like to do this! i grew some lovely sweet pots from slips i bought last year so i can follow your instructions. however i am wondering when i should start? it is late february now and i am thinking to put the cut potato into water maybe end March? would welcome advice on timing!
They look so lovely, mine have worked. Do you have to put them in the ground during the summer, is too cold to put in now, or could I grow them in a grow bag indoors?
Depends where you live. In the SE of the UK I plant the slips out around the middle to the end of May. They are normally ready to harvest around October/November time.
