Artificial seawater instructions:
We recommend using the artificial seawater salt brand 'Instant Ocean'; however, other brands of artificial seawater salts can be used.
1. Mix Instant Ocean with dechlorinated tap or purified water.
Use ½ cup Instant Ocean per gallon of water or roughly 38g of per liter of water.
2. Stir vigorously to ensure a good mix. Let sit (wait) for 1 hour or more.
3. Measure specific gravity with a Hydrometer ($15-$30 USD).
Recommended Specific Gravity Range: 1.022 - 1.026 at 72F (22°C).
4. Adjust salt level accordingly. If the specific gravity is too low, add more Instant Ocean. lf too high, add more dechlorinated water.
5. Sterilize the artificial seawater using UV light, 0.22micron filter, microwave heating or a combination of these methods.
6. Add Nutrient solutions (F/2 media, DinoNutrients or concentrated DinoNutrients)
For small batches of artificial seawater, we recommend using a covered pyrex dish (to prevent evaporation) and microwaving the water until very hot (but not boiling). Once cooled, we recommend adding a standard DinoNutrient pouch to each 2 to 4 liters of artificial seawater.
PyroFarms can provide Instant Ocean salts, DinoNutrients and concentrated DinoNutrients (200X).
Important to mention that our PyroDinos are grown in Pacific Ocean seawater (DinoNutrients) but can be adapted to artificial seawater over time.

Wow so cool! I wanted to know what camera you use to capture the dinoflagellates? Also, I was wondering if you could use just the Pro Glow Flasks and not all the mason jars, etc.?

We use a Sony A7SII to capture most of our low light shots. You can grow only in a Grow Pro Flask or any clean clear container.

Im loving this. I feel like i discovered magic and want to keep it a secret... i know about red tide but is there a way to balance these in a fish tank or a larger amount of water?
@PyroFarms
@PyroFarms 2 года назад
We grow our PyroDino in tanks as large as 300 gallons. So expansion is possible. PyroDinos will live happily in a saltwater tank system but will eventually be removed by mechanical filtration and predation (snacks for your fish).

Thank you for your super helpful video! I would have one question: How frequently do I have to change the water environment? I mean, how long the first set-up would work? Or is it just a case to pour some more Dinonutrients let's say after every month (to top up the evaporated amount)? I hope you know what I mean. Thank you for the answer.
@PyroFarms
@PyroFarms Год назад
The idea is to continually add DinoNutrients (sterile seawater) to the container over time, eventually pouring off the excess to maintain a clean and robust PyroDino culture.

2 questions: Would you need to perform water changes if one were to culture these in a dedicated tank? When some of these cells die and sink to the bottom, how would I maintain water quality? Thanks!
@PyroFarms
@PyroFarms 2 года назад
There are no water changes. PyroDino cells are immortal (meaning one cell divides into two cells after several days). We have been carrying the same PyroDinos for several year with no water changes. We do add fresh seawater (DinoNutrients) and pour off extra culture so that takes care of any debris and evaporation over time.

I have been having alot of fun cultivating these friends after we bought a kit from you! We use ocean water since we live on Hawaii. I did have a devastating accident tonight and lost a bunch of friends as one lid wasnt secure :( One question i have is, does the amount of water in the container effect how well they multiply? Seems like less water is better? And what would you suggest if they seem to be dying off?
@PyroFarms
@PyroFarms Месяц назад
Use sterile seawater and try to keep the culture in log phase growth. This means that you should not add any sterile seawater until you see significant growth from the culture. This video explains this better: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TZVGcGs2wNU.htmlsi=FyxkVd8XC-bRoXOR. Once you have the culture in log phase growth you may continue to add enough sterile seawater to allow some room to grow but whatever you do - do not over dilute the culture. They like to be in high density and it could take a week or two to achieve this due to the stress of shipping.

You can reproduce them like plants. They are plants or 'plant-plankton'. And like plants - they can die.

Could you grow these in say a 10 gallon fish tank by themselves? Would adding a filter or pump to it kill them? Not to be turned on all the time, of course, just when you want to look at the color.
@PyroFarms
@PyroFarms 2 года назад
You could grow these in a 10 gallon tank. They gave been grown in 300 gallon tanks. A clean and somewhat sterile aquarium with a cover could be used. Bubbles or water pumps could be used for short periods. Although neither would be required.
@cc.8805
@cc.8805 2 года назад
@@PyroFarms How would you keep it clean/sterile? Any different from a fish tank?
@PyroFarms
@PyroFarms 2 года назад
@@cc.8805 Yes. slightly different. For a normal saltwater system with fish or coral you would just add the PyroDinos to the system and they would be fun for a few weeks before mechanical filtration and predation reduced their numbers to zero. As a stand alone culture in a 40 gallon fish tank you would need to clean the tank and then start adding PyroDinos and saltwater (1:1). Keep the tank lighted during daytime hours and keep a lid on the tank. For long-term success you would want to maintain cell density (do not over-dilute) and not use any water movement or filtration.

@@PyroFarms Why only up to a year? Do you mean a single culture without feeding or splitting? I thought you could just keep these going forever if you continue to maintain and subpassage/split the cultures as they get overcrowded.

heya, i had two cultures of dinos out on my window sill. one on either end and while one collapsed, the other has stayed alive for quite some time. both containers have started growing little blobs of green on the insides however. any idea what that could be?
@PyroFarms

The green blobs are contamination (green algae). Unfortunately your green algae will eventually take over the container.

Hopefully yall still keep up with comments on old videos because I have a question. I just bought a container of your GrowPro seasalt formulation as I want to make my own media (those pouches get pretty expensive once you get more cultures growing). However, there's absolutely no information/reviews/discussions about it online outside of your website so I can't really experiment with adding different fertilizers or "nutrients" to it. Any ideas on what could work besides yall's concentrated dinonutrients? I read up on F2 media (which you list in your description), but that's also fairly expensive unless I want to roll the dice with random bottles on Amazon.
@donttrackmegoogle
@donttrackmegoogle 9 месяцев назад
Also, in your description you say that you have concentrated Dinonutrients available. I guess that's exactly what I'm looking for, but I can't find it anywhere on your website. Do you still sell it?
@PyroFarms
@PyroFarms 9 месяцев назад
The best solution for small scale artificial seawater is to add regular DinoNutrients after you sterilize the seawater. Example: add one to two pouches of regular DinoNutrients to 4 to 8 liters of seawater (1 to 2 gallons). This should work fine. We also sell concentrated DinoNutrients as a custom product. Please contact support@pyrofarms.com for a concentrated DinoNutrients quote.
