What a Blessing to hear the Southern history. Now I understand why my grandparents from Louisiana only had a 4th grade education because they had to farm to survive. Country Style!
Thank you Hezekiah for taking us back in time in SC. My mother grew up in Holly Hill and my father grew up in Vance South Carolina. The stories my mother told me about how she grew up was damn near like Hezekiah. She would pick cotton to have some money to help out the house. She was raised by her grandmother because her mother passed away when she was 6 years old. She took care of her baby sister and started cooking at a young age. She left SC once she graduated from high school and went to New York City. Married my father and a year later guess who was born lol. She has been telling me about her life in the rural south since I was 9 years old. Remember folks to learn your family history from the older generations so you can pass it down to your kids. Art thank you for this video so we can learn about how our people lived while growing up. Until your next video you and the family and friends Travel Safe 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
I grew up poor in Birmingham and was raised by my grandmother. Listening to this podcast brings back rememberies of very little food in the house and chopping wood to keep the house warm. My grandmother had a garden, and she would pick vetables out for dinner. In the winter, the robin' birds would come down to escape the winter up north, and the trees would be completely full. I would shoot about 300 of them, and we would clean and cook them. My first meal of the day was lunch at school. My grandmother has been dead for years, but her work ethic that she instilled in me allowed me to live a very successful life. I wake up every day and thank God for allowing me to live a comfortable life. The one thing my grandmother taught me that I still follow today. No matter how successful you become, never look down on anyone who is not so fortunate as you. I have always followed her advice, and over the years, I have helped a lot of brothers and sisters get ahead. I love being around country folks because once they find out that you are a good person, you have a friend for life. I still like to hunt and fish. This is why I love watching Country Style.
When you hear the term "raising sand" .....you know you're in the SOUTH ❗ Art, this is one of your best videos. I love hearing about our history from someone that has lived it.
Absolutely love this and any thoughts or talks dealing with country style keep up the good work so encouraging 😅 to hear things about the past brings back good memories try and watch country style as much as I can ❤.
When I was 9-10 yrs old. My brother and me would sit on the floor listening to our mom tell her story about growing up. She would have us so Mesmerized Just listening. Mr. Hezekiah's story Resembles My Mom's Story So Much. 🙂
Perfect Timing🙌 Countrycr Style!! 💜 Wow!! Hezekiah mentioned Johnson grass. That took me back to childhood❤ that Johnson grass is razor sharp😂😭 Hezekiah is truly a Southern Gentlemen! ❤
I can answer that. The world would be a better place because people would be more appreciative of what our southern relatives did to survive. My mom's from the south and grew up on a farm. I can relate to these stories very well. It brings back fond memories I heard from mom.
This is just like listening to my grandad from Louisiana tell his stories. So many parallels of country life in the south for black folk back in the day. My grandad always tells me similar stories about the cotton fields, gardens, big mama killing snakes with a hoe... I bet my grandpa and Hez would be good friends
Subscribed. I really enjoy this channel but especially listening to Mr. Hezekiah talk about the old days. Preserving and showcasing our culture in such a beautiful and respectful way. More videos please!
Man, Mr. Hezekiah’s demeanor reminds me of all of my Uncles, always gentlemanly, sharp and with that toothpick. But don’t let the smooth taste fool you.! I wish you would have just let that camera roll, he still had more to say., but I appreciate every bit of this video. Thank you Art and Mr. Hezekiah for sharing 🙏🏿!!
Thank you Art for featuring Mr. Hezekiah...he is so natural. He told his history with simplicity while dropping all kinds of knowledge. He carries himself like an intelligent yet proud, hardworking man. We can see that his parents instilled integrity and work ethic in him. Next up...how about Navy Boy Rick? Would love to hear his story as well ❤
He said put a hog pin out there & them hogs will root up all that stuff dere dere dere dere. I love my people from the south & their southern accent/country style! Shout out to Art for filming, narrating & interviewing everybody all the time but in this case particularity interviewing our main man Kat Daddy Hezekiah Ward.👏🏾💪🏾👍🏽😎😄😂
Thanks to The Southern Gentleman Mr. Hez Ward! Brought back plenty good memories of my Grandfather Ollie Dungee who lived 97 years on this earth with only 6th grade education. @ Art These factual stories will grow big. 👍🏾
Listening to every word Mr Hezekiah Ward said what he said at times made me Happy and Sad also because of the Trails and Tribulations of our Ancestors.thank You Art for this.need to hear more from our Elders. Shout out to my Family in Greenville and Sumpter South Carolina. Philly love ❤️
I know what you mean but don’t be sad. Be proud of the resilience because I don’t think any other group of people on the planet would have survived what our ancestors endured. 💪🏿🇺🇸
Excellent and super interesting!! Kudos! I love hearing part of Hezakiaha's story! Please do these as often as possible. They're great time capsules and documentaries! Thank you! ♥️♥️♥️✌️😁
Hi Art!👋🏾 Thank you for allowing Mr. Hezekiah the opportunity to share his life experiences growing up. My granny is 93 and she has shared so many similar stories with us about her childhood growing up. Looking forward to the next interviews
I've been subscribed to your channel since the hog head cheese video!! And I've always thought Hezekiah was the coolest man on the show. The knowledge he has and everything he knows and seen, They don't make them like that no more!!!!
I have watched this channel for a couple of years but have never commented. this episode felt so real. I'm 58 and born and raised in Columbus Ohio. my parents are from rural Kentucky. I absolutely loved going "back home" as a kid and hearing the stories of the past like that. I experienced quite a bit of that country life when we went. I even ended up living there for several years. I never got tired of hearing the about the life experiences of folks like Mr. Ward. I look forward to more episodes like this.
This was a blessing to hear Mr. Ward's wisdom. My mother is from the south by way of North Carolina. She still tell us stories of her youth living in the south. It's such a blessing to hear these storys from our elders. Stay bless Mr. Ward and Country Style.
☝️this right here... I encourage you all to speak with and record your elders. Our children need these stories. I wish I had some of my long gone kin folk. 🙏
You're so right!! I know many who don't like photos or being recorded. I tell it's more for those you love than yourself. Art have memories I wished I had with my friends & family. 😊👍❤️
Hez knows about southern cooking for sure. I grew up on collards cooked that way. Good eating for sure! Hez is truly a gentle gentleman. Everything from his style of dressing to speaking. Remember the Cook Off was held on his property . He reminds me of my Uncle with the “tooth pick “ in his mouth. 🤣🤣 You gotta love the stories of the country. You learn what the “school books” fail to include. Sitting at the foot of the old heads is precious. Thanks Art for another informative educational episode. Would love to hear the entire crew backstory. Especially Gissum! 🤣👍🏽 As long as you keep them dumb where they going ~ Hezekiah Ward That’s the truth! That’s how they kept black folks down
Love it! I'm a white man but Grandpa was a Mississippi share cropper growing up just like this. Had nothing but farming knowledge. Came north to work in the factory during WW 2. Used to sit around telling stories just like this. He taught me the value of working hard. Nobody going to give you much. Now I'm a successful construction company owner . Thank you gentlemen!!!
Love all the country style episodes. But love this episode.its like listen to one of your uncles or father talking about how things used to be . Love from Cleveland Ohio
I would loive more gardening tips! I raise my children to know about a garden raising they're own food bc of my grandfathers garden, but I wasn't taught much. I love the old style planting tips!
This brought back so many memories of me visiting my grandparents in Georgia in my youth, me leaving in southern Jersey. My grandparents grew peanuts and raised chickens, which allowed me to gather eggs after fighting off the rosters. Being around my cousins humbled me as they would use the sentence, stop bragging and being so proud. They also would tell someone, you’re just a well dressed hobo. You brought back so many memories. 🙏🏿🙏🏿👍🏿
Thank you for sharing this beautiful conversation Mr. Hezekiah and Art❤❤❤ It's always good to hear from the Country Style family. Have a peaceful weekend. Checking in from Virginia Beach, Virginia By way of hometown Philadelphia

Hezekiah, the southern gentleman! Who dresses nicely. Love and enjoyed your story. Thank you, Art, for bringing this forward. You're doing outstanding work. Keep it coming. I see you with your own production company and studio. 😊
OMG….thanks so much Art for introducing us to the “southern gentleman” better known as Hezekiah Ward. You know sitting down and reminiscing with him reminded me of a project one of our teachers gave us in grade school. She said, “pick your oldest relative in your family and let them tell you about some special memories and moments in there life growing up my age.” What an amazing educational experience I received. My great uncle would tell me about the boxer 🥊🥊 Jack Johnson and the stock market crash in 1929 etc. Thanks for a little peak into how Mr. Hezekiah grew up and the best thing that God ever made a “loving and caring mama!” 💯👍🏾
I could listen to Elders talk all day about there "back then" reminds me of when my grandma and gran auntie would take us crabbing to hilton head (not this new one) we had to tie the raw chicken around the rope ourselves wrap it around the pin roller and get to crabbing on the banks with ya green net lol, and waiting for someone to pick us up from the yamassee train stop which was literally on the side of the rode in the middle of nowhere 🤣Good times I'm blessed to have had the best childhood
Children today definitely would have an attitude adjustment if raised like this gentleman. Mr. Hezekiah, you're a great influence on each one who hears your word's of wisdom.
I miss hearing these stories🥰 my mother, father & grandma used to tell us so many similar stories. Miss them all dearly…Thanks I needed this ❤ aint heard chicken snake since my folks, learned to always keep a sharp hoe while out n the yard
Arthur have mercy on me this brings tears to my eyes! I've heard this many times from close family members, but can't get enough. Don't stop keep it going I think you have hit on something. PBS! Are you listening? NPR ! I want more! Arthur you are a genius! Love you man.
LOVE THIS!!! Hezekiah reminds me over the folks I grew up with on the eastern shore of Maryland. I am looking forward to retiring in SC. Researching towns/cities now.
I’ve watched this 5…yes 5x in a row. Though we’re from different regions, I’m able to relate. Born in Illinois, my folks are from the sticks of Forrest City, Arkansas and Corinth, Mississippi. Job well done Arthur and Mr. Hez.
I just love y’all so many memories being raised in the South… reminds me of my uncles… I’m in Las Vegas now however I kept my southern roots that’s not going anywhere … love this video Thank you
Hezi Remindes me of my grandma and grandpa. Grandma is from jasper texas and grandpa is from colfax louisiana. everything Hezi talks my grandparents have told me the same. I hold those cooking traditions to my heart dearly. Creole cooking is in my DNA. Being a man from California. I'm blessed to hold Southern values.
Mr. Hezz is absolutely my favorite.... I watch your shows in hopes that he will make an appearance.... he is TRULY a Southern Gentleman. GOD BLESS you Mr. Hezz !!!
Definitely miss my momma stories of growing up farming and picking cotton. She told many stories of those cotton mouth snakes. 💜💜 Thanks for sharing Mr. Hez with us. Much respect 👋🏽
I love hearing history from the older generation and how they grew up. It gives you a lot to be thankful for and to appreciate. Blessings to you, Mr. Ward and Art.
Alright that's what I'm talking about. Mama Ward didn't play the radio, she knew her stuff. She took that land that most considered nothing and put life into it!! Amen
OG is a good man and I can even begin to know how they felt back in them days because it was tuff for black folks but we make it work through anything and still today it’s as tuff as you make it for yourself? Thanks 🙏 Country Style for the memories and we can’t wait to hear from the other guys?
Listening to the elders walk you down memory lane is very soothing. I feel ashamed we didn't even have to endure 1/10 of what they dealt with yet we still complain. Praise God
I love Hezekiah. This is why people in power attack the educational system so hard. What he said encompasses that..keep em dumb, hungry, and barefoot and where they gonna go? This man has a wealth of knowledge and if you got something to sell you aint never broke! My man!
