Growing up in California's Prison System - Matt V - Fresh Out Interviews

Big Herc met with Matt V, a south sider from the Inland Empire, whose story is centered around the psychological aspect of Prison. Many do not understand the various forms of psychological warfare that takes place once you are on the inside. It can come from guards and inmates but the worst, is when you are your own worst enemy. Take a look at Matt's perspective as he explains segregation, the disconnect from family and the struggles of life on the outside.

Your interview style where you just let the other person talk is so rare yet so valuable. You get a much more real conversation when the person gets to take it where they want and talk about what they found important rather than you stringing them along so they can answer bullet points.

Other people try to control the speaker and steer them in the direction they want it to go, but Big Herc just wants to hear their story as much as we do. He knows is not about the host.

Ya a lot of interviewers are retarded the other reason Herc let's him talk is because Herc basically knows everything he's gonna talk about besides his personal experiences.

If you like him for being a regular ass dude in the pen, youd really enjoy the channel Lockdown 23& 1! Hes done a decent amount of time in prison but never got down with gang life or anything, but he has all the basic prison knowledge. He also is a gamer and a cool ass dude

@mr facts "All Mexicans are southsiders" Incorrect. Mexicans are split. Hispanic gang members from southern California are considered to be “Southsiders.” Hispanic gang members from northern California are considered to be “Nortenos.” Southsiders owe their allegiance to the Mexican Mafia, while Nortenos owe their allegiance to Nuestra Familia. The statewide north-south dividing line between Norteños and Sureños has roughly been accepted as Salinas and Fresno.

If you have dirty guns, take care of them yourself without asking your friends to put themselves in legal danger too for something they haven't anything to do with. It's a different thing if the friends offer to help, and if I was his friend and felt I could bail him out, I would have done so. But if I was the dude with the guns, I wouldn't be going around expecting my friends to take part of the responsibility for me.

focknfree yeah my thoughts exactly. Matt has a nervous personality, he has some trauma in his past, and I don't think he's really got the tools to manage his anxiety. He spent his first years as an adult locked up and probably formed some persistent negative beliefs about himself in there. He would probably get a lot of help from talking to a counselor or therapist. He probably had some of this stuff going on before he went in, RE: anger, getting overwhelmed, craving freedom from responsibilities.

Damn, sometimes I wish the stigma for guys wasn't that we can't show emotion. he even says " sorry I didn't mean to cry" as if emotion can be controlled 24/7, because that's honestly the expectation. For any guys who feel like they can't show emotion, fuck that. Let it out, nobody is judging you.

Seems like something so easy and quick he could have done to avoid loosing YEARS of his life...? Maybe I'm just paranoid and thats why I always air on the side of caution. When i worked in the steakhouse restruants or restruants at times we would get people men and women who were ex cons, and they got a job by there P.O. so they can work there way back into society you know and my boss would let me know a head of time who he hired and i would have to train these people that got out i never brought it up on why they got locked up etc but i would show them how to weather it be inventory, how to weigh the hamburger pattys or how to use the dough mixing machine, the ovens, the dishwasher machine, etc and some of them would have small talk some told there storys when they got used to being around me in stead of work related talk, but outta all the yrs when i was a line cook or a baker etc many of these people both men and women who did time alot of them told be that..they would rather go back to being locked up again cause now they have to worrie about child support payments, paying rent, staying away from alcohol and drugs, paying tags for there car just stuff like that cause its hard for them to adapt in the real world some do make it and some do go back

Yeah, especially when he touched on the emotional/mental aspect (& I can only speak on it because I have so many close going through the same)...you could tell in his mannerisms & speech that he fighting something still. Mental Illness is so prevalent in prison, I would argue, probably 3 out of 4 suffer from some type of Mental Illness...perhaps even higher. JUST like he said, didnt none of my people fear the physical, & these arent the biggest guys.....they ALL talked about how it fucked them up mentally & emotionally forever.

if he ain't married without kids he has the option of renouncing society and becoming a monk or yogi. Then he could just live in a monastery practicing spiritual austerity to cleanse his mind body and spirit..Also all that karmic energy he accumulated..Hopefully him (and others) learn Eastern Thought and Spirituality so they don't have to suffer anymore and become a victim of "Western ways". Let's face it this society programs people's minds to think that money and material wealth is everything in life. Then we start working our whole lives which just destroys the mind body and spirit...When really you could say screw all that and just live the most simplistic life possible with basic needs and meditate your whole life to achieve peace of mind body and spirit..You stay out of karma and harms way and you can enjoy a long and healthy life...One would have to let the ego die though which could take a while depending on the willpower of the individual.
