I remember my time there and I miss it. It’s cool to see how the people I knew grow and develop and produce something like this. It’s amazing. Great Job.
Man why did I watched this. Grew up in San Diego 80's to mid 90's til my family moved to the Philippines. SD has been and will always be called home for me. Went to Perry til my mom got me out and sent me to some school far away called Green. Went to Bell then Morse. But dude is right, live there nothing seems to be wrong with PH. It's home. Graffiti was big. Only crew I remember from then was JVC. And that two storey McDonald's, I remember walking home one day from Bell and some big as Samoan busted up this Mexican and walked out like nothing happen. People standing in line just looking at the menu like there were new choices. Memories.
My family moved to PH in the early 80’s from Shelltown to get away from the ghetto problems . In those days PH was a place to escape the gang life and the murders and robberies. I remember all my friends dads were from a hood in San Diego somewhere but not Paradise Hills. My neighbor and one of my best friends as a kid was Gerardo who ended up being Gato from PH and was murdered in Plaza Bonita in its early days. My other neighbors were Darnell and Preston Randsom half Pilipino and half black . We lived on Potomac st near the Rec center . Man I wish I still kept in touch with them. Slowly through the 80’s and 90’s you seen all the sons and daughters who’s parents moved there from different neighborhoods start to bang for the hood and being close to Encanto , Lomita Village, Spring Valley ; and National city it was not hard finding opps to bang on . Even the Pilipino gangs found them selves as opps . We also had a large Samoan presence which mostly banged for skyline which acts as a border for PH . Having family still in Shelltown there was no way I could be from a gang unless it was for the ones my family banged for. I refused to get jumped in and had lots of opportunities. For both PH or Shelltown . Well that’s my story . GB you
We have very similar stories I was born in Shell Town of 39th a block from St. Judes move to PH in 1990. And yeah I remember the Gato incident. So yeah very similar
To the gentleman who lost his father in the Brook, your Dad was my paper delivery guy. I will always remember his smile and kindness. Every Christmas he would give us a Cristmas card along with my paper. Your Father was a man with a heart of gold. He would be proud .
I remember that too. It is strange how something so simple could stick in your memory. I also remember that my mom would get that McDonald's orange drink in a big cooler thing so the kids would have something to drink at the cookout.
Good work! The editing, lighting, cinematography were all well done...kudos! And thanks for presenting a brief view of my childhood community (grew up there in the 80s). I heard all the stories growing up, but other than a shooting next door and a robbery at the Kragen on Paradise Valley Rd, I (fortunately) wasn't affected by any violent crimes. That's terrible what happened to Mark Pagayon's father; may he rest in peace -- thanks for taking the time to share your story. Hopefully you guys can do a more in-depth piece in the future
PH was the life. Was the struggle. The love and the fear drove you man. Peace to all my brothers and my sistas out there still today. Be safe. Rip to the brothas and sistas we lost too.
I remember the old cricket park down the street from the rec center. The Samoans use to play down there before it became a obstacle course and I remember we use to play football in the grass area before the skate park was made. Good times
I remember we used to have rock fights (smh) on the side of the hill before they made it all smooth, goin to the rec eatin free lunch all fucked up lol.
This was nice seeing a documentary of my old neighborhood loved growing up in PH. Block Busters pops Taco Shop introduced me to Carne Asada fries and Chips. McDonald’s was the meetup spot we messed up for a lot of people doing stupid stuff on the second floor 🤦🏿♂️ I enjoyed living out there even raised my kids in the neighborhood for a time. Now it’s getting bad with all the bums and crack heads roaming the streets. Still mad that PH has buses now we had to walk or ride a bike to get to places back in the day 😂😂 The only bus that was there was the National City bus that took you to Plaza Bonita. Thanks for the memories I still roll through once a week to get that refreshing vibe back.
Pretty cool. It would of been more in depth if you had older cats who actually was in the bangin era (90's) tell more of what it was like. The Pirus from the Brook, BDowns, Barkadas, State Siders, the Samoans, KDK's, Peaches (vPH 1608), etc. The race wars in the early 90's was the craziest shit. Period. If you didnt grow up in the 90's you have no clue how insane it was.. Cool doc tho. Big ups
@@SwagMaster824 You trippin. I for one, was a part of that era, although SOME are gone under the dirt or behind the cold steel, I can assure you a lot of us are still alive and well.
I went to penn elementary then bell junior high. After that I was at Lincoln high then moms sent me to UC high where some bangers went at that time, some were my friends but a lot weren’t and you can guess what happened during my time at that high school.
FUUUCKKK MAN I WENT TO PERRY ELEMENTARY AND THEN STRAIGHT TO BELL JR HIGH.. FUCK I MISS IT ALL MAN IT WAS CRAZY AF BUT IT WAS HOME.. WAS SUPPOSE TO GO TO MORSE BUT MOVED AWAY TO AZ ... ITS TIME FOR A VISIT 💯💯
I noticed that people from San Diego (mainly niggas) have a slightly different accent compared to other cities in cali. It’s very slight but it’s there lol. It has that Mexican influence I see
This was a cool little documentary, but the only thing that needs clarity is the guy in the charger jersey is showing you parts of Skyline, not paradise hills. That can lead to confusion
@@abrahammariscal6643 Lol. No it’s not. I grew up in the Brook. I remember when the delivery man got shot, and before that when the police officer got shot. Ask the guy in the Deathrow shirt about me. Paradise Hills is not Skyline. As far as gangs are concerned. Paradise Hills is under Skyline, but the two communities are separate and different.
Who you think shot the delivery man. They accused two paradise hills gang Member of committing that murder. Yeah that Skyline if u lookin for the blacks but if u lookin for Mexican gangs u gonna find Paradise Hills in that area
I’m from Inglewood, California but my cousins live out there in San Diego. I use to slide out there and hang out with the Parkside and Skyline Piru homie. I had a bad ass little Filipino girl I would also kick it with who lived out of Paradise Hills. She and her family was cool as shit. She ended up joining the military tho so we lost contact. Hopefully she’s doing okay.
Where my Bullock Boys at? Lol. Miss my old house, riding bikes, playing street football, walking to Mr. Bills arcade, Pizza Plaza & Plaza Bonita. Good times.
That was a tight video, I grew up in the Hills by the car wash on Saipan ST. , I can tell you it wasn’t easy but definitely showed me how to stand on my feet like a man and until this day I hold that self respect. Big up to all the people that made it out of Paradise Hills alive especially coming out the 90’s 😳 GROWING UP THERE left me with PTSD lol no joke .
I went to Valencia Park Elementry in the 60' s. Lived by St Rita Church that was my hood. Good memories. Green Cat Liquior.Valencia Park Market. Huffman's BBQ.😁
Excellent video!! Grew up in PH. Went to Zamarano, SCPA. and graduated from the charter school by the two story McDonald's in 2012. I loved growing up in PH, never a dull moment. Our culture is very unique in PH. We are so lucky to be a melting pot of East Africans, Filipinos, Mexicans, Islanders, blacks, and whites. No places like the hills. I feel like NaShon sounds like PH, something about the sound of his voice and laid back tone, reminds me of Ryan Anthony. I hope to see more videos, would love to see you touch on musicians from PH.
Very good documentary. I was raised on parkside and in the Doriana apts. Dropped out of charter school by the Zapata taco shop lol. Used to walk from Reo dr to 2 story McDonald's everyday. Went to Lee elementary and Morse high.
Mister Chubbers i went to lee but my mom saw how bad shit was getting around lee so she sent me to bonita right when I graduated, still was a hood baby tho haha
I am a OG bullock boy my parents bought a house from the ground up back in 1986 across the Canyon from Morse high school. It’s been 25+ years since I left and it brings back all kinds of memories. Went to Fulton next to Morse then to bell jr high in 88 then to Morse 92. I could tell tons of story’s but the only ones I remember the most was back in 88 when starting the school year off my mom was about to drop me off and there was a mass execution of people killed on the front lawn of the Morse high school and my looking at me and say have nice day like WTF? I had a convertible purple lowered truck in high school and I remember leaving school during the Rodney king riots man I thought my ass was going to die driving down skyline. Ph was no joke back then I knew everyone and everyone knew me. I left in 1993 thinking if I stay here I’m either going to die or go to jail, meth was out of hand, crime was everywhere the city I was born in didn’t look the same so I left. I still have homies that send me videos of my old house and the hood but I know I can never go home again. Much love SD PH
You probably remember some of the things I do about PH then. For 40 years I lived just on the border of NC and PH off of Harbison. I have seen PH go through a lot of history and changes.
I used to walk to Granger Jr. High by way of Rachel Ave. every morning. I'd pick up my friend who lived on Rachel and then would go up to school. I forget the name of that steep street, but the school was at the top of it. I haven't thought of that in years . . .
I lived on the border between PH and NC near Harbison Ave. That street used to be a favorite for the NC and PH street racers. I cuss them out for waking me up with the vroom vroom, but had to secretly smile: someone was living the life! I was baptized at St. Michael's catholic church in the 'older' part of PH. I often did my homework in the PH Library, there. It was my favorite library. I liked so much better than the NC library farther away from me. My experience of the area goes back 40 years and I've seen it go through about three eras in that time. When I was a kid, it was a nice residential area. I remember it had the best Christmas decorations. I particularly loved the giant Christmas stars folks would hang on the backs of their houses from Manchester, etc. That era faded and PH became, kind of, boring with the most important thing being the rebuilt Naval Housing off of Allegheny. Then, things started to change for the worse and I heard of more crime in the area. That was so sad. I'm so sorry for the Papa shot doing his job! That was so far removed from the PH I remembered as a kid. You can't imagine. So different . . .
LEE ELEMENTARY, BELL JR HIGH, MORSE c/o '99. Night time basketball at the Potomac basketball courts. Twin hills baseball. Victory foods, reo gas those were the days!
I was one of the few girls who was hated b/c I was a good student, did not become pregnant and did not care for pot. And even my own parents did not like me.
I don't know the exact lines of what designates PH, but great video otherwise. The interviews by all reflect the views experienced by all in the area. I grew up on Altamont, just off Reo Dr...directly behind Paradise Hills Elementary....
Spring valley 1922 is with the shits though . That shopping center where the kfc Taco Bell and Pizza Hut is spring valley by adress but skyline loves to claim that area
I live next to the rec center. If you grew up playing there you'd be happy to see how nice it is now. And that little walking area behind the skate park just below just got a nice little landscaping facelift. The homies living in their cars there, not so much but hey, things take time. Paradise Valley road after dark is still wild af.
It changed to much they took all the fun out remember 12th and imperial 97 a random people would take you to a party or you would definitely find a Hina to chill with or go down to Tijuana and party
Do you know one of the PHotos you took of the graffiti is the guy who murdered your father? I was with them that night, I left a couple hours before it happened. I'm their big homie, they where acting a little funny, but if I was their, it never would of happened. I do feel bad. Please contact me, I'd like to talk with you.
I remember Victory Foods and more importantly, I remember Casa Martinez next door to it. The BEST enchiladas in the world! This was back in the 70s when PH was a much different place.
My homie been living there for 30 plus years I remember living there on deerhurst hanging in the condos. Back when blockbuster was there next 2 the 2 story mcdonalds
What year did that take place in the brook? Rip to his father. Plenty of shit went down in the brookz. One of the craziest ones was hearing somebody putting their new born in the dumpster. Sick fucks
Lol most of y'all "Paradise Hills natives" be claiming the wrong area for decades. These areas in this video are predominately outside of PH; mostly in the Bay Terraces, [2-Story McDonalds, Woodman Village, Meadowbrook APTs, Mariner Village APTs, Bethune Elementary, Bell Middle School, Morse High School, SCPA], some streets in Alta Vista & in Skyline [Skyline Dr., O'Farrell]. The ONLY areas that is Paradise Hills in the video is only the skatepark and the rec center. There's usually 3 reasons why people associate the BayTerraces, Skyline, and Lomita-Jamacha as Paradise Hills: -All of Southeast San Diego's landscape is hilly = hills -'Paradise' Valley Rd is the main street that can take you to Spring Valley to National City before it becoming E. Plaza Blvd going west. -The Paradise Hills gang [vPH or 1608] be doing a lot of graffiti in these communities and a lot of y'all "natives" see this everyday as you go to school, go to work, etc. // It would be bullshit if you didn't see this coming up. I've been living in Southeast Daygo 10+ years from Ocean View Blvd in the westside of Southeast all the way to the eastside in the Brooks and never one day once I landed in the Bay Terraces, never called it Paradise Hills. Lol if you think I'm just full of shit, just simply look at Google Maps. No hate, cool doc but the natives got their geography fucked up, that's all.
@@mrdaveylh1 You are right, my mistake. "southside ocean view basement bloods aka 59 brims" . But logically speaking, Ocean View is the most western community of Southeast Daygo, you feel me? Logan Heights counts as Central Daygo.
Only reason its PH is because straight G's hogged it. Caught enemies slippen and left there brains on the fences. Know your history. Paradise hills from the Brookside to Reo Drive and that's straight PHacts. Ask around why its B•PHls•13 in the bay terraces.
I knew somebody was gonna come here and be all technical about a 9 min video lol obviously this was an amateur video and just a snippet of what could be series on paradise hills. this could be the good kids mad city episode where they interview people who werent gang members but telling their experiences. but you never lived in paradise hills bro so you cant really speak on it. and 10+ years in the southeast is not enough my boy try again lol thanks for the google maps geography lesson tho
Bless you all very much ! PH is my kingdom also ! Watch my videos and truly believe and receivith your miracle blessings! I'll be home soon you true FOREVERS !
Befor the taco shop and blockbuster we owned a filipino video rental shop there JE VIDEOS. Yall old school if yall remember that. Man I remember when someone broke into it and broke all the santo ninos that was sold there.
My family used to live in the apartments on Potomac by the drive thru convenient store then we relocated and got a house on Manos Drive by Parkside. I miss those 80’s-early 90’s Paradise Hills days.
