I think this episode perfectly puts into perspective that coming up from the bottom isn't just about hard work. Hard work is a big factor, but what would've happened if Laurie's headmaster didn't see his potential as a rugby player and personally recommend him for that scholarship at that elite boy's school where he use to be a head boy? Would he have been a Searcher like Spanian? Or, would he have found his way into Rugby another way? Who knows, but there is a highly likely chance the street life would've taken him just like it did Spanian. If we as a society are serious about tackling crime and poverty, we need to start from the start. Find things that individual kids are good at and really help them to hone in on that interest, skill, or passion so that they can make something out of it and reach their full potential before the street life takes them

Spanian, you would make a great 6 or 12 in rugby, you would be a unit. Good to see Laurie again, not that I knew him but he epitomised the fact hat rugby at one time was certainly a sport that catered for all body shapes and sizes, even though I have found this very late. Great chat. I am also looking forward to sampling a kebab from your kebab van/truck.

Awesome interview ! So many of these points resonate with my life , how the decisions I made were affected by the people I was surrounded by . Someone once told me “ Show me your friends and I’ll tell you who your are “ . I look back and so many times I think how I could have gone down a totally different path and try pinpoint what made me choose differently. Coming from Johannesburg to Australia at 18 in the mid nineties things were so different for me as a kid and I think that any group of people who made me feel like I was a part of something drew me in and those people weren’t always … let’s say moral citizens 😂. Nevertheless ,somehow was it fate , lucky choice who knows but I know once you have been to the bottom or at least my version ( and everyone’s is different) the only way is up and once you know what it’s like down there everything else seems a lot easier to some degree because without having failed you would know what success looks like . In the end I think all it took was one person who saw me and was a role model that shaped my future and gave me an opportunity. I’ve purchased your book and look forward to the read . Keep up the good work .
