We grew some wheat by accident and let it grow to see if it was actually possible to make flour on a small scale.

It's called wendling to remove the chaff from the wheat berries. Now I'll give you a tip if you want white flour after you grind the wheat berries the you can use a screened calendar shift the white flour out leaving the wheat germ behind because it cannot fall through the screen.. then you can take the wheat germ and make cream of wheat cereal. There are you tube videos on how to cook and make homemade cream of wheat using the wheat germ.

First time viewer. YT spun you up because of my "homestead grain" searches, I guess. I also viewed your bread make vid. Anyway, I'm no wheat grower, thresher, baker but have "messed with" rice here on Gulf Coast. My totally unsolicited advice is that using chain for threshing is TOO much. Too heavy. You want to jar the kernel off the plant not beat & break the kernel. You might want to switch out the chain for 3,4 or 5 staggered lengths of nylon weed whacker string. It's durable without having the weight/mass that cracks kernels. As for the baking vid...I'm sure others have mentioned using 1/2 store bought white wheat and 1/2 your homegrown whole. I subbed. Not that Canada is ANYTHING like the Gulf Coast but I think people can at least learn something new. Good luck and I'll keep watching P.S. saw you had Highland cattle. Lol. They'd be deader than dead (& precooked!) down here. I've seen other YT "homesteaders" as far south as N.Carolina/ Tennessee raising Highlanders. I shake my head. Straight up animal abuse seems to me. Wrong animal in wrong climate.

Oh some great tips and thoughts there! The one reason the chains worked well is because they kernels aren't being smashed against the ground or something solid. Because they are in a bucket, and can move freely around the bucket, vs being on the ground and being flailed.

There are many ways that electricity has made our lives easier and more likely to succeed. I buy flour and store in pest-free packaging. I guess it might be good to have some wheat grains and an electric or manual mill in case one can’t get to town to buy flour, or if electricity is down for a period of time.

I believe separating wheat from chaff is called winnowing and flailing is threshing..

It takes a lot of work and it's not a great bread. The whole wheat is way to heavy, you need to put it through the grinder a hundred times( talking from experience) to get a decent flour. We gave up on flour and now grind our wheat for cereal which we do really like. Had several laughs watching you bring back memories.

I’ve been thinking about this for next year. Planting food plots for deer, why not harvest some of the grain for myself. I sure would love a small combine.

We can remove the handle of our grain mill and put a drill instead. A bit easier on the arm. hehe. But it's a beer mill, not a flour one.

Somethings are not worth it only on a large scale. I have a grain mill for my Kitchen Aid mixer for making beer. I get my grain when I help a friend clean out his combine after he is done wheat. Nice explement I will gladly pay the $10.00 dollars for a bag of flour.

you can buy wheat from a Grainery. i just bought (just today) 15 gallons of wheat for $6.00. it could still use a bit more cleaning but not much. you could use it as it is. just make sure you tell them you want wheat for human consumption. compare the Grainery price to what you see on the internet. 15 gallons of wheat will last a long time. only 6 bucks. what a bargain.
