Hey guys!! Perhaps you've heard of a growth vs fixed mindset, but I wanted to dig more into how this impacted my academic career and wider life. There's so much power in believing your knowledge is constantly evolving, as opposed to fixed. Is anyone "naturally" amazing at anything? Even though we have different aptitudes and motivations, I believe that with enough effort, everyone is capable of anything 🌟enjoy!!

sometimes it’s just so hard to remember that you can actually grow from your mistakes and a lower grade doesn’t mean you’re stupid. I think that is partly the school systems fault. For instance, if you’re a straight A student and then struggle in a certain subject, teachers are suddenly becoming worried about you like there’s something wrong about failure. At the same time, school tries to encourage students to make mistakes but the main idea is still to get good grades or otherwise you’re not going anywhere in life. I just wanted to say thank you. You completely changed my mindset and now I will stop saying that I’m just bad at something because I’m still growing and will get there! 🥰

I used to have a growth mindset back in grade 9. Back then I didn't have a reputation for being particularly good at anything but I was eager to improve. Then as time went on I developed a reputation for being the "smart kid" which made me fear failure. I even reached a point where I would rather quit than try at all. Now that I am starting university I really want to develop a growth mindset once more.

Thank you, thank you Jade. Since I started high school I've been struggling with scientific subjects and I recognize that I have repeated to myself that I would never understand or be good at chemistry, math and phisics because I thought I hadn't got an attitude or something like that. I definitely need a growth mindset, I have let my grades define my intelligence for too long. P. S. Today I'm grateful for because I did my first weekly planner ever for next week.

Yess Jade, I have struggled with a fixed mindset a lot, until I realized that I need to change my perspective and attitude. I am so happy that I got the chance to apply the growth mindset into my life in a very special way. I always had a dream of playing the piano, but I have convinced myself that" I won't be able to do it". I looked at all of the amazing piano players and compered myself to them, totally ignoring the fact that they have practiced a looot until they got where they are now, and that I have never even started yet.. Last year I have made a decision to start. I made my dream come true and allowed myself to try, and grow. It was not easy, but after practicing and learning and trying- I suddenly realized than I CAN do this, it was all in my head. The minute I decided to put effort and actually try, rather than just saying to myself that I am not good at playing- I realized it is possible. Thank you Jade, you are the best. Every time I watch your videos I get so inspired and motivated! By the way, sorry if I have any mistakes, Lot's of love from Israel!🇮🇱✨

Just wanna quickly pick up on a statement made right at the start of the video where you said 'im just naturally not good at maths' and I just wanna put it out there that some people actually naturally aren't good at maths. I have dyscalculia and my brain just cannot do numbers, yes I can improve but I will always struggle with that, no amount of learning or growth mindset will change that. Fully support everything else in this video and the general message behind it but I also want to recognise that some people struggle and that's not their fault and it's completely valid and there isn't a way to 'fix it' nor should they really be trying to.

@@UnJadedJade Completely agree! You can learn to be better but recognising your own limitations is super important. I agree with this, but I would also wonder what changes in approaches were made in these efforts. What needed to be done that that person wasn’t doing? Perhaps some changes could be made to actually see the improvement. I suppose your question also begs the question “when should one accept defeat?”. Ideally, never. Realistically, whenever one has accepted that they gave their best but the return does not outweigh the emotional or financial burden to continue going. Perhaps their efforts would see better improvement at a faster rate at something they’re already decent at to begin with.

I thought I wasn't good at math and statistics because I had problems in school when I was young. I finished a degree in Foreign Languages and recently (I'm 27!) I started a master's degree in Data Science. With. Maths. And. Statistics! I was scared, saying to myself "I'm going to fail, I'm not good at this". BUT I realized that I'm not bad at all! It feels so good. It all comes with a lot of practice and the right mindset. As you say, it's amazing how our mind prevents us from pursuing life paths that we would have enjoyed more. It's not about skills, but about the right mindset. I love Maths, Statistics, Python, R, and so on, and I have so much fun with my studies that I regret not studying them sooner! Thanks for the video. It is really inspiring and I can relate. It made me think a lot! The casual magic of the day: this video! Hugs from Poland even though I'm Spanish (Galicia)!

So simple, but important words. The problem is, even if I know how this unhelpful fixed mindset is damaging life, it has stuck with me, ‘cuz it’s so hard to reject criticizing yourself if you’ve been doing it for all of your life. I have pretty toxic relationship with maths, as I’ve been growing this “I’m not a maths person” mindset since middle school. Now I have to pass maths for uni and every attempt to solve any problem feels like a torture. I know that I should be kind with myself and let myself grow from mistakes, but brain sees it and like “oh here u are, doing every possible mistake, how did you come to an idea that you can pass it??” WHYY this “growing” concept is not to be taught in school???? It’s way more important than any subject, it can change lives✨ Thank you.

I saw this video at such a great time. I've been struggling a lot with my mindset towards music, creating, singing and playing the piano, and I now realize the underlying problem is that I put so much pressure on being perfect, that I miss the opportunities to grow. I don't have the courage to put myself out there, and when I do I criticize every thing I do "wrong", instead of learning and growing from it. I've really been suffocating by passion by making myself believe that I am not good enough, and that I have to be the best to do it. I'm not at the state I want to be with my creative abilities, YET. thank you ❤️

I do believe that the kind of mindset you describe is ideal, leads to an overpressured, burn-out prone generation. If you constantly feel like you can do and know everything, and there's not really an excuse not to, then you'll be frustrated when you do not really feel the inclination to learn it. Following your example of coding, I DO think that I'm not the coding type of person, so I'm not going to bother with it. And that's fine. My life is fine without that knowledge. You mention that you felt embarrassed to not know something, and that that has improved with this growth mindset: that's not right. You could work on not feeling embarrassed, not because you know you could learn this in the end, but being okay with not knowing this. Ever. I hope you can acknowledge the point I'm trying to make here. This type of "mindsets that change your life" just kind of terrify me for the well-being of the people.

I agree! Especially in practical skills. For example you’re probably never going to succeed in sports unless you’ve started at a young age, and similarly with learning music and playing an instrument you’d have to play for 10 years to catch up with those people that started at 6. Also people have different learning disabilities and body types so nothing is really achievable to everyone.

The area I need to work on is being myself and forgiving myself. During the pandemic I quit A-levels (people please don't come for me) to pursue my passion for horses. I am now on an equine course that I love but am a lot less academic and have fallen into old negative mindsets about motivation and learning. I am also recovering from 16 years of domestic abuse and struggling to live as my own person rather than my sister's protector or the person my parents want me to be. I am constantly giving in to other people's wishes rather than figuring out what I want and who I want to be. So I am going to work on being the person I want to be. I am not the person I want to be...yet. PS. Jade why on earth did I stop watching your videos? Oh my days Jade this is so beautiful and raw and true. It's so brave of you to open up about how you felt during your time at high school. It's so hard and challenging to actually accept that you need help, but really that just proves how badly you want to grow and improve and that's a real skill. I'm fourteen and a lot of people at my school say I'm smart and it puts pressure on me to get good grades and 100% on every test. And I understand that struggle of scoring less than your peers. I love this video and I really appreciate you making it to show everyone that you have to make mistakes to grow. I love you Jade have an amazing week xx

I am so glad you bought this up. I am doing GCSE English as a mature student. I am not getting good grades. I and everyone else said that I am not great at English. then I decided not to care about grades. I said to myself I am just going to learn it the best I can. If I am not where I want to be I will just retake it. I am not sure if my grades are getting better but I am beginning to learn it

Coding! I hear you. I am tackling a project, one which seems not be going well, I always forget to save, cannot find the right chr type meanwhile my classmates are just breezing through. While my teacher said that the more mistakes I make, the more learning I'm doing, I was just fed up with how many mistakes I was making, and more importantly then, how quickly the others were completing it. Now I realise I just need to work on it! Thanks Jade xx

Okay so this topic is soooo important !! I’ve been told by all of my maths teachers growing up that „I just can’t do maths“ but in my last year I met someone who showed me how to use the skills and understandings I had and it basically just clicked and I had the best grades I’ve ever had

Can we all just appreciate for a second just how GORGEOUS Jade is rn!? Like that positivity and wise words just radiating from her is truly beautiful. I'm so happy to have stumbled onto your corner of the internet!!! And the growth mindset here I come - it's been so hard recently coz of my GCSEs and just not knowing what's gonna happen, I find it so easy to slip into the fixed mindset and not raise my hand for help; from fear of my classmates mocking me :(( But jade because if this, I'm not going to let anyone and Their opinions phase me now x Ilysm and you are an inspiration to us all xx

This is such an amazing (and much needed) video! I have always been "the smart one", the one who gets good grades and makes it look easy, but people don't see you in the moments you're struggling and when you're tired - they don't see how much work and effort you put into it and how resilient you are. I am now in my last year of college and I can proudly say that I have learned to ask for help, I have come to the conclusion grades will *never* define you or your worth - sometimes we just need to see the bigger picture. You have helped me so much in this process, thank you for helping us grow, Jade ❤️

Thank you so much for this encouraging video. i constantly feel like I will never excel in certain areas that I struggle with because I have a fixed mindset. It really takes just a mental change and your whole outlook on life shifts. All throughout high school I struggled with math and I had this mindset that said, "I'll never be good enough." I was always getting bad scores and my friends excelled in that area and my thing was music. I was so nervous to share my math scores with people afraid of their criticism. Now that I am graduated and I am going into community college, I don't want to have this mindset anymore. I want to take the courses I am doing with an open mindset. I don't want to think that they define who I am but I need to be more open minded to the challenges I face. if i fail, I look at it as a success because I learn something from the experience. I love your channel and it is so inspiring. Keep doing videos like these. It's like having an older sister giving me advice. :)

I also used to compare my intelligence and self worth with grades and I just didn't realise at the time that advance concepts in any subject will obviously take time for me to understand and learn and all of this landed me in a very bad state of mind where I couldn't even do the questions I knew with confidence. I am trying to change it every single day and it does make me feel a little less isolated to know that a lot of students struggle with this ( even the nerdy ones🙃) . Thank you for this video. Keep growing 💚

Literally everything u said resonated with me. I also had the reputation of being "the academic girl" and what I hated the most was that everyone seemed to believe that I was obsessed with getting perfect grades all the time, when in reality I was just trying to do my best cause I cared about learning. But the pressure and the "don't fail or you'll be seen as stupid" thing happened anyway.... and still happens. On the other hand, I loved the concept of the growing mindset. A couple of months ago I joined a basketball team because it's a sport that I like and I wanted to exercise more. I'm still attending, but it takes me a lot of mental energy. Most of the girls have been playing for years, and I sometimes feel like a burden. But on the flipside, I enjoy most of the trainings. If I think it rationally, I can see that I've progressed a lot these months, taking into account that I had never played before. But the "not good enough me" is always there, wondering why the hell I thought joining a team where I was the only beginner was a good idea. Anyway, sorry for this long comment 😂 but I wanted to thank you, Jade! The world needs more people like you💛 love from Argentina!

I really like the video Jade, and it definitely boosted my confidence in terms of trying new ✨scary✨ things! In the Netherlands we have a term called ‘denken in hokjes’, which basically means placing people in fixed boxes with certain static (so not really nuanced) characteristics (like being introvert or being a sporty person). While people are actually more than just simple words attached to them. They don’t fit into the same boxes, because everyone is unique. People can be surprising, people can reach things they never thought they could do. And this is all by trying and believing that you can be everything. Try and believe you can do it, and you’re halfway there🔆

For me that one field is singing. I took others' views about my progress too personally and I became very insecure about myself when I got in an amazing, high-level choir. Suddenly I felt like an impostor there - I felt like I've got there by mistake, that I haven't got nearly as good voice as other girls in my voice group, I compared myself with others. But now, as the choral singing is suspended, I've got some time to think - and I'm gonna get to practice soon again after a well-needed break. To sing just for fun, for myself, to make my own personal progress! Cheers to growth! xo

I wish this video existed back when I went to secondary school or high school. I was mediocre in every subject (Only got a few Ds, mostly Cs and very few Bs) during those years but I absolutely had a fixed mindset at that time. Maths and sometimes natural sciences were the worst subjects ever. For every grade I got I hated constructive criticism so I never read comments from my teachers and thought that I could never be extremely good at the subject. Already there I hindered myself from even reaching what I truly wanted and grow from it. I didn't believe in myself and thought I could never be as good as the people in my school who got Bs and As. I've always loved learning but I think the stress about grades really ruined it for me. Happily, when I improved and re-did 4 of my high school subjects earlier this year in a private school I became so motivated to learn bc of my teachers and got into a growth mindset. I managed to get two Bs and three As on the exams, improving from C to B/A in the subjects. Now I'm at uni and it's much more difficult indeed but I'm having fun and I learn a lot!! Thank you Jade, for reminding me to continue going on with a growth mindset

I really love this mindset! I like that you picked on the people around you have completely different experiences to you and that will help/hinder them in various ways too. For example: I took Egyptology and I was like "I'll do hieroglyphs, I'm a visual learner, piece of cake" and I'm not even joking when I say the Egyptians literally switched their language up for the ~aesthetic~ and it was an absolute ball ache to learn. However, everyone else was doing fine, understood it etc and we later found out it's because they had all taken the summer programme and had already gone through the little blue book. My knee jerk reaction is "that's not fair! That's cheating!" Which is an interesting one, unpack that later. But it's also really reassuring to know that okay I'm so far behind bc I don't have the leg up that the majority of the class has. I did quit hieroglyphs and reduced my 50/50 split to 75/25 bc honestly even with the extra tutoring that I asked for, I couldnt keep up with the class and the lecturer wasn't going to slow it down for the 5 of us that hadn't done the summer programme. However it was a really great learning experience bc it taught me that if I don't understand something literally everyone else does, it's probably bc they have a head start on the thing or something they've learnt previously is giving them a leg up on the thing

Well.....I was suffering from fixed mindset for so long. In short...I believed myself to be very intelligent..and I stopped trying and learning..it hit me real hard in college..and I became insecure of the slightest things...and go on a spiral of thoughts, without admitting the fact that I was wrong. Now I'm trying and coming in terms with the fact that I'm not intelligent enough. I'm trying and adapting growth mindset. My advice for all is..it is hard..will be hard..but u r strong enough to overcome it.

yesss, I've always said this!! Everyone puts a certain understanding on themselves consisting of words (I am an introvert, I am bad at sience subjects, I'm not sociable, the only thing I'm really good at is sports), but those words are such a misshaped model of you, because they're based on the past and they're words. I’m in 2nd year of medical school, I’ve always thought that I wasn’t good at memorizing long paragraphs and that I only have a short term memory which will not allow me to do well academically and it has been frankly stressing me out therefore affecting my abilities to learn and work hard. I literally started thinking about back up plans for when I suddenly drop out and do something else I’m good at, give up my dream simply because it isn’t for me. One thing that’s been helping me tho is thinking about how many other people must’ve felt the same but never gave up. We all have a brain, some of us know how to use it efficiently, and I don’t YET. It’s such a pity that we like to limit our abilities and feel so intimidated by failures. Thank you Jade for this video ❤️

I am going to take the public exam next year and the revision really makes me struggle. The questions that I don’t know made me feel I am not the material of studying. The feelings of failure drowned in my mind and started to ask myself why I am so stupid. Keep blaming myself when I think that others have greater potential. I totally feel the same when you shared your experience of confusing questions that seem everyone knows. Your words give me energy to believe that I can do it in future.
