GRUFF is a handmade, paper short film I've been designing, building, puppeteering, and editing across almost three years. It's a story about the people you know love you, but aren’t exactly verbal about it. It’s how I've processed my dad’s passing, and learned how to love people who don't love exactly like me.
I believe we all have individuals in our lives, related or not, that pride themselves as the "strong silent types". Through this short film, I hope all of us can learn to empathize, connect, and more deeply love the those who have so much more to say than we think, and just need us to listen.
I hope you enjoy "GRUFF".

3 years of painstaking work... gone where? This has to be the most ''mid'' lukewarm shtick ever put on the site. What even was the message? Pop Pop should have paid more attention to his kids? The old bastard was a prick to his daughter and it's somehow remedied by him getting cancer. Wow! What surface level garbage did I waste 9 minutes watching. When the fictional show within your short film seems more interesting than the show itself, that's bad... Sorry, but if you cried to this, toughen up.

@@Liam-hd1kulmao ur just copypasting this around 😂 why are u pressed that people have hearts🤣 the message is about how actions are louder than words, and how love doesnt need to be vocalized to be felt. it’s a very touching story about family and loss, and how to grow through differences to reach love and acceptance (learning peoples love language). the last scene we see that although he was a quiet father, he was in fact very proud of all his daughter’s achievements. i hope ur just ragebaiting for ur own sake😅

The cinematic storytelling is so incredible; the way her entire life she's been sitting facing the armchair, seeing nothing but the quiet nod. But when she actually sat in the armchair, seeing things from her father's perspective, she saw all the appreciation he's been harbouring all those years.

I’m sobbing because my Pop (grandfather) passed away last month, 3/15, and this reminded me so much of him. He ALWAYS used to watch old westerns and was under-spoken but always loved and cared for us so deeply. I came into this short film just because of the paper-puppetry style, completely clueless that it would encompass my Pop so well. Thank you for putting so much hard work into this project ❤

I really love how in the reveal of the true perspective of that chair. its not facing the tv. its facing the wall of all her accomplishments. but the thing i REALLY love is that the things front and center have nothing to do with her career as a spy but instead focus on her accomplishments growing up. the ones he got to share with her personally. the marshal art competitions her at dance practice. her graduation pictures of her in his lap. those are dead center on the wall.

I can’t get over this at all… it’s technically and artistically brilliant. But more than that it’s deeply moving. I lost my mum last year after her going through chemo, I have memories of coming home with my wife and my 4yo daughter in her pretty funeral dress. I hadn’t shed a tear since that day, refusing to acknowledge all the things this video so painfully and beautifully highlights. And now, as I stand in my kitchen, a 36 year old ex-soldier, biker, covered in tattoos and scars, I’m finally letting go of the pain. Thank you for making this film.

Wow, I'm in tears. This short really touched me. This is my life! My relationship with my old man. I really want to go back home to visit him. My old man is just like the dad in the short. Very quiet, and doesn't communicate his emotions at all. I always feel unloved by my dad. He's always been so cold and distant no matter what. When I tell him my major accomplishments. He just says "that's good" and nods his head. That's all I never get from him. Now that I have my first apartment, I've become the main character of this short. I don't communicate with him. I don't visit. I don't call. I basically gave up because I felt like he didn't care. Also, just like the dad in the short, he got sick from old age. He doesn't do much but sit around and watch TV all day. He always watches old movies and shows. Especially Jackie Chan and Tom and Jerry. Ever since I was young, that's all he does. Watch old school tv, or watch repair videos on youtube. This short made me realize that my dad does care, he just cares in his own way. Just like the old man in the short, he always keeps my accomplishments. Every metal I've won. All of my drawings I made for him. My birthday dress from when I was 1 years old. My graduation cap and gown etc. Things I've bought him over a decade ago, he still has and he takes good care of it. I remember me and my mom sewed him an traditional garment, and he worse it for 15 years until it was torn to shreds and he refused to get rid of it. My mom ended up throwing it away in secret. Now I realize why he was so upset when he couldn't find it. It never dawned on me that it was sentimental. This short gave me a perspective I never saw. Now I see that he cares. He just doesn't communicate it. I don't know how to thank the creator of this channel. ❤

He doesn't have any grandchild yet, because my sisters and i are still figuring out our lives. Despite having huge phobia for childbirth, i just want to get married and give him just one grand child. I don't want to loose him before that happens. Watching this short film reminded me how much i care about him. He is my favorite person after all, and i just have to listen more God! I'm bawling! i cannot thank you enough for making this masterpiece. my grandfather recently passed away, and up until now i was always angry at how he would never speak to me or tell me i was enough. looking back at it, he's done so much to me through acts of service and quality time than words of affirmation. thank you for making me realize that he always thought i was enough.

I don’t cry at things easily, but this made me sob uncontrollably. I showed it to my parents and both of them were crying too. I lost my grandfather four years ago. This animation was so scarily accurate that it actually spooked my family. He looked exactly the same as her dad in the animation, we also called him papa, and he was in the military. This animation is beautiful. Sir, from the bottom of my heart, you have made an impact on my family as a whole. It made us feel in touch with my grandfather even after he passed. Thank you for this. I love how the super-spy's action and praise is described as "living LOUDER", how she craved and chased the SOUND of applause, but found the deepest love in *silence.* The narration unifies the theme with its own language. And an even deeper irony is that this film's most demonstrative moments aren't characters exchanging witty dialogue, but them quietly touching hands and being close. The narration describes the characters' mindsets, and then the visuals deliver the gut punching catharsis.

Well I just bawled my eyes out 😭 what an incredible short film. When I was in highschool my senior year I had an english teacher that would show short films almost every friday to start the class. We would write about what happened and things we noticed and then discuss with her and the rest of the class. We'd talk about deeper meanings, hidden details, writing techniques, all sorts of things. I cant remember the name of a certain short film we watched but it made me (and quite a few others) just cry and cry it was so powerful and moving. Honestly im ashamed i cant remember much about it, but this instantly made me think of it. Youve created a masterpiece and brought back part of a memory I had forgotten that was important to me in more ways than one. Thank you.

A letter of recognition to people who express their love with physical contact, it is really beautiful. Even if it's not to a large extent, it's a gentle and valuable way to signal your affection.

I was honestly expecting it to be an hour long but it’s ok the only thing I didn’t like is that it’s a bit woke but it’s still good

The grandpa liked the movie so much, because he projected himself to the sheriff character. He wanted to be as important to his family and protect them like the character in the movie, but his family was absolutely overachieving, while he was bound to a chair due to cancer. Very touching movie, those years of work really paid of, thank you so much again for putting this on RU-vid for everyone to see.
