The swept-wing Grumman F-9 Cougar holds an important place in the evolution of carrier-based fighters in the United States Navy and Marine Corps. Developed in the early 1950s as a successor to the straight-winged F8F Bearcat, the Cougar incorporated several innovations that would heavily influence naval fighter design for decades to come. With its thin, high-aspect ratio wing and powerful engine, the nimble Cougar achieved transonic speeds while maintaining excellent low-speed handling qualities needed for carrier operations. Its troubled early service life gave way to a distinguished career as one of the premier fighters of the 1950s. The Cougar's design legacy paved the way for Grumman's next generation of swept-wing cats - the F11F Tiger and F-14 Tomcat.
