What a beautiful and useful radio. So well thought out, and in the right hands can be repaired and used for many more years. When Perry Como came on I started to sing. I have a portable currently, but when my wife and I have a house I would want something along the lines of this radio.
What the German company Grundig was back then is the Chinese Tecsun today. Why are there no American radio manufacturers? What a star Grundig was and now all its riches are in Chinese hands.
A Grundig analog classic shortwave radio from 1978 using analog and mechanical technology, with a wide variety of useful controls and warm rich mellow audio from its internal speaker. Thank you for sharing.
It was on this very Grundig Radio, back on 1980 that a Radio DX Amateur, listening, has discovered,ONLINE,before anybody else, the ill fated US military operation to rescue the hostages in Iran that took place on April 24 1980.
Ja, ein tolles Radio von Grundig. Wir benutzen den Satellit 2100 und 3000 heute noch täglich. Und es gab ja auch noch einen SSB Zusatz dazu. A super radio from Grundig. We have a Satellit 2100 and 3000 and use it daily. And there was also a SSB module for the Satellit. We present it in our channel m2counselling and in the next days also on SHE.
@@mikewestphal934 Suddenly it restarted working on all bands without any tinkering. On night is able to catch Voice of DPRK on 15250 khz. Republic of San Marino, facing toward Adriatic Sea. On MW this rig receives very well many Slav and Romanian stations. I can say i'm very satisfied.
thank for the information. I really can't hear any difference with it on or off however but then again my high frequency hearing is all but gone from decades working around aircraft. But I don't have the operators manual for his radio so thanks for the explanation.
Make sure you check the capacitors on at least the power supply. The FM "warming up" is usually a sign of capacitance shifting. Since it only happens on FM, it might be just on that supply / board.
Don't know if you saw my later lost but I had this 3400 completely restored and realigned. It is now perfect, probably better performance than new. I just had to make this radio 100 % , it's just too beautiful.
The best ever made awardwinning radio worldwide. It outperforms the legendary Sony-ICF 2001 easily. Never sell it, such a radio wont come back anymore.
I plan on keeping this one. As I said, I drove over 500 miles to take this to an engineer who completely recapped, and aligned this 3400 and it's better than new.
The released Iran hostages paraded in a Welcome Back, at the US Military Academy, on January 25, 1981. I still have a bath towel, I bought at my job, depicting their return. I just purchased a Grundig Satellit 3400 on ebay and I look forward to it's arrival soon to add to my collection of these receivers, which along with others now total 15. I hope it will perform well, as you point out age causes deterioration. Thanks for your video pointing out your work on it. Ray W2CH.
@@wu2u Thanks, I just received it on July 21, 2020 in excellent condition, with the power cord. So far on FM reception was excellent. Nothing received yet on SW, MW was moderate. Everything seems to work. The bands switch nicely. It is a solid fairly heavy radio. We are moving from here in Delray Beach, Florida in about 4 weeks to Nashua, NH in about mid-September, so I am looking forward to reception up there. 73 Ray W2CH.
@@raymondmartin6737Mine also worked just in FM, but moving a little the switches now works fine in all bands. Still some faulty contacts here and there, but sensibility is great. With its antenna i have been able to catch Voice of DPRK from Italy.
Actually that tweeter is really "on" even when you put it on by the button, only in FM. It is powered on from the amplifier only when switched to FM. What you hear on AM from the tweeter is only placebo.
Que tipo de señal ,,(( en CW )),era esa,en la frecuencia ,(( 0,232 / 0.34 )) MHZ?? Que servicio presta??? Saludos!! EXCELENTE Y BELO RECEPTOR!!! LA ENVIDIA DE TODO RADIOESCUCHA seguramante!!
I was looking for this quite a time and managed to get at last. With some deficiences which I was able to rectify so that is all perfect now. . It is beauty and the performance is unusual. But there is also option for charged battery which seems not popular type - with side charging and voltage 9 V. I got it only with 6 dry cells 1,5v . What may be the type of it?
Its called a Dryfit Type 476, made by Sonnenschein. Another label on it says "Sicherung T 2 A Fuse/Fusible. It is an 8v, 3AH pack. I have one for mine but it no longer takes a charge. I haven't tried rebuilding it yet.
Thanks for essential data. In my place happens sometime 2 hours brakes in mains and it is the best time for reception of AM radio - low interferences make a huge change in plus. Then I need good batteries. What I observed sensitivity worsens with worsen battery voltage. Dry cells when new can deliver 9,6 V I'checked other possibilities and possibly it could (but with mechanical modifications) be Makita 9,6V, 2 Ah. But then charging should be lifeted 9V to 10 V which I am not sure can be done.
first. sorry for my bad english i restored my grandmom's 3400. i clean inside and outside. change bulps. all feature are works. but weirdly, its volume too low. i remember old days, its sound was powerful. but now its weak. i checked everything, but i cant find problem. did anybody know any info? pls help.
Hi, I think I told you a while back ago in 2020, that I obtained a Grundig Satellit 3400 in very good condition and it works well. However, I was just using it today, and while using the red LED frequency digital display, it went out and has not come back on. Would you be able to tell me what might be a problem 🤔 here? Thank you, Ray, W2CH.
I hate to think it could be serious. I believe the digital display is actually a frequency counter, and perhaps the circuitry is bad. If you email me privately I can give you the name and contact information of the engineer who restored mine. (mikewu2u@g****.com)
Hi, about 6 months ago I had the frequency display, digital readout, which had failed, repaired by Tom. Now I wish to sell my Satellit 3400. Would you know of anyone who would be interested to purchase it? I asked Tom too. I also would like to sell my Grundig Satellit 208- 6001 receiver and Grundig Stereo Concert Boy 4000, both from the late 1960's. If you do know, please Let me know. 73 de W2CH Ray
yes, just use a flat plastic tool to pry in the open slot at the top of the clock. It pops right out and the batteries are standard button cells available anywhere.
I have a Grundig Satellit 2100. What can I do to clean it up. It works well except the one of the tuner is stuck on something it can't move. I also have a Grundig, the last one before they were made in China. I don't have an instruction for it....but it is quite a radio....
Not sure if you are referring to the push buttons on top? The radio does disassemble quite easily, and will slide out of the forward "shell". You may find something physically hindering the travel of the button. Sometimes these radios are opened up and the person working on it didn't put things back together right and didn't have everything lined up. That could potentially cause a button to be "jammed" in place. If so, it would be easy to get to function again.
@@Pelerincha I would say that if you can't turn the band selector then something is impeding it. Something is physically blocking the rotation. Once frees up try using Deoxit on the contacts and potentiometers
Obsolete radios everything has gone digital, i have a kenwood R200 picks up nothing now but am and fm radio the odd ham broadcast, but still a nice radio for nostalgia. and yes i have a discone, and a long wire aerial.
I have one for sale.. functions good and normal condition. I am from Switzerland. How much would you like to pay? If interrest drop me an email to maxwellperera@yahoo.com
+agimkhaled Where should I send the photos? I could perhaps post them on Craigslist and send you the link, though photo quality is not fabulous usually on Craigslist.
Thanks, it's actually getting a complete restore as I write this. The caps finally got to the point where things just weren't working as they should. AM and FM were weak, and FM took more than a few minutes to "wake up". So a tech is going to recap and align the radio to perfect specs.
This guy actually tried to demonstrate ham radio SSB at a time of day that was the worst timer for this! You do that in the morning or at night. Very poor review because of this. Most users want to listen to ham frequencies., too
Different bands are open at different times of the day with 20 meters (14.307 USB) open mid morning through early evening. I think the radio shows the bands are open. Think about what you post first, maybe do some research. DE WU2U! Wu2u
