The town of Grundy, Virginia, had been subject to flooding by the Levisa Fork River. After the flood of 1977, a decision was made to move the town. An entire mountain was removed to make room for a new location for the town. This is the demolition of the old downtown, shot mostly from May to September, 2006. Over 40 commercial buildings and several private homes were demolished.
Video clips were taken from the hour-long DVD, "We Remember Grundy". WeRememberGrundy@gmail.com

Thank you for documenting this. I was on the radio in Grundy at WMJD when it was playing top 40 music. We had to abandon the station in the Vansant Shopping Center and broadcast from WNRG AM on the other side of downtown Grundy. That was me who had the job of reading the list of drowned, missing and found every hour every day for a week. A man sitting up in the bell tower of the Courthouse talking on a battery powered CB radio would update that list to me as I received him on a CB radio at the station. This event and the people of Grundy are deep in my heart. Thank you for doing a great job with this video.

I visited this town in 2008 and had lunch on that street. Don't know why I just searched it today but its crazy that its all torn down. That 1 street is basically the whole town!

My lady of twenty years grew up in Grundy. We ended up staying w her dad in 2012 and we both got jobs at the new Walmart. What hurts me is thinking of all the memories she had when those old olacws were there. She passed two months ago and i miss her. She must've had many memories in those places. But good video.

As they say “we’ll keep you safe even if it kills you”. I heard one of the engineers say that in order to protect the town, they had to remove it.

my grandparents went on their normal summer trip from Florida to Michigan in around march, they passed through here and stopped to look at the buildings, on their way back in august they drove through again and noticed 70 percent of the town, to this day they think they were seeing things 😂😂

This is beyond sad to me. I grew up in Grundy. They destroyed the entire town for a Walmart. Population continues to dwindle to next to nothing even with two colleges in the town. Grundy had an opportunity to be Boone, NC if they had played their cards right. Now I haven’t even been there in 3 years and I don’t care if I ever go back.

This breaks my heart, especially that image of the Lynnwood Theater in the thumbnail. I saw my first big screen movie there when I was 3 years old. The Karate Kid part 2. I think it closed a year or after that. If anybody in the comments knows the exact year the Lynnwood closed, let me know. I'm thinking 87 or 88.

Absolutely great video must have been really Crazy to see all this demo. The excavator with the claw was defiantly different the way the arm on it was built!

Why is this entire town being demolished?

Repeat Flooding of years and years. Ghost town because of flooding. Town was relocated by the US Army Corps of Engineers. Rebirth of a town!

@@CJ-my4rv Thank you, CJ. I had heard that the population dwindled dramatically, but I wasn’t sure if this was health related, Mother Nature…or what it was, specifically. Okay, I now have a better understanding!

As part of the rebirth, the county chartered a law school…then a few years later and a few miles up the road, but still in the same county a chartered pharmacy school. Appalachian School of Law and Appalachian School of Pharmacy. So, a ghost town …abandoned due to severe flooding and unimaginable poverty experienced a major rebirth. There’s a “small B rated” movie about the little town that moved a mountain…somewhere out there…

A lot has to do with lost jobs in the coal mines and no available jobs elsewhere other than logging.
