As a 90s child who grew up on Nirvana and Pearl Jam, I'm a little sad that there was no mention of the Converse Chuck Taylor as a defining element, they seem so uber grunge to me. I remember getting my first pair of Chucks when my mother, who was a teenager in the early 90s, realized that I was picking up on those bands. I was so invested in dressing like Kurt Cobain that when I got into journalism school I had a full-blown identity crisis due to having to dress more business-y lol Other than that, great video. It's awesome to see someone talking about grunge aesthetics and not falling into the ultrapurist discourse or refusin to acknowlege that it was, indeed, adapted throughout the last three decades.

I grew up in Seattle and was part of the grunge club scene seeing Soundgarden (and many others) before they were big. YOU NAILED THIS. Even the psychological element of the gentle “don’t bother me.” Grunge is sorta lumberjack/fisherman meets punk. Other elements included waffle-weave thermals (the shirts or the long-john’s under cargo shorts or ripped jeans) and yes Docs but also Fleuvogs, and my own take was a pair of little boys pointed black cowboy boots that I bought at Goodwill. I liked them especially with a red wool plaid miniskirt, fishnet tights, and Bauhaus t-shirt. My makeup was always liquid cat-eye eyeliner, matte skin, and a red lip. My favorite lipstick was a red made by a brand that catered to black women because it was really dark, red, and muted. The other part you also got 💯 was the effortless. Because it truly was effortless. It was like “Hmmm my bodycon tank dress isn’t gonna be warm enough today, I guess I’ll wear this flannel.”

Honestly, I think Grunge ceased to exist when Fashion picked it up. But purist notions aside, I love the casual attitude of Grunge style. Great video, as usual. Also, go ahead and wear your small backpack. It has a casual free spiritedness that works. Just wear one in a more adult style in leather or canvas.

@KaiDecadence
@KaiDecadence 3 года назад
Mmm well if we're talking about how it was doing in the mainstream, I would agree with you that the style died in popularity when the fashion picked it up but as for the music, it was still being made but just underground just like it was in the late 80s before it exploded in the 90s. Grunge music still had a place in the Alternative scene but yeah, it didn't really return to the mainstream after the 90s.

I am a romantic who falls primarily into the grunge aesthetic, which I feel like is pretty easy for a romantic to pull off, I think we can fit pretty squarely into that aesthetic when we want to. But it think it’s interesting that a lot of styles (that I’ve seen) seem to really fit natural body types, and I wonder if this has something to do with how the modeling industry has impacted society (because most models are in the natural categories).
@elyssa_aesthetic
@elyssa_aesthetic 4 года назад
Victoria Que it’s so interesting because some personal stylists hold the perspective that the “hourglass figure” is the easiest to style and that all other body types should strive to create this shape. But just like you, I notice that there is a lot offered to those who have more of a blunted/unconstructed frame.
@lapetitepoire5
@lapetitepoire5 4 года назад
Agree with this 100%. Most models are naturals or flamboyant naturals, and most clothing designers seem to prefer the type of woman who is essentially a human clothes hanger -- tall, wide shoulders, narrow hips, etc. As someone with the completely opposite body type -- short, curvy, round hips -- I have a hard time pulling off almost any styles in clothes today. But that wasn't always the case. I think it's a function of Fast Fashion and its impact on society, where it's cheaper and easier to produce a lot of deconstructed clothes than to produce a few well-constructed clothes. Shop in vintage stores and thrift stores and look for clothes that can be more easily altered because of better construction and materials.
@rebeccajordan4491
@rebeccajordan4491 3 года назад
100% can verify. I went to Parsons, got a degree in Fashion Design, and this is how it is. Models and their long lines are glorified, and clothing is designed for how it hangs on their frames. In my experience, even designing for “normal” women, fit models were either Natural or Classic types, so the end product shipped to consumers was developed on a very balanced-to-yang frame.
@MoPoppins
@MoPoppins 3 года назад
@@rebeccajordan4491 With the internet and direct-to-consumer selling ability, it’s nice that designers can now target the exact body type they want to design for, esp. if mainstream manufacturers completely ignore them. It’s a ripe market w/ built-in demand, particularly in cases where the customer has no DIY tendencies. Sewists can create their own wardrobes, even if they have unusual/unique measurements, but most won’t be sewing up their own clothes from scratch, or even alterating them, so now more than ever, curvy women can be marketed to w/ clothes that will flatter their beautiful curves, and it’ll be a win-win for both the fashion designer/sewist AND customer.

This was a nice little analysis but I think the last tip you should've included is to listen to the music. I'm not saying that one has to be obsessed with it but i really think what helps sell the aesthetic and give confidence is knowing that you enjoy what the aesthetic is centered around and plus listening to music can help get you into the mindset and even inspire looks. Like something that I sometimes do when it comes to certain looks I do is that I'll play some music while I'm deciding and building a look for the day, you know setting the mood and whatnot and it can be pretty fun to do. But that's just me. Aside from that though I think this video was solid, nicely done. :)

You brought me back to my teens in this video! You absolutely nailed the look. I was born in 79, so the 90’s were my teen years. Revlon’s toast of New York was THE go-to shade of lipstick. Girls would use a brown eye pencil to line their lips, then use that shade to colour. You’re right, contouring didn’t even exist (at least we didn’t know about it). We would go to the good will, and find the old man stuff. Oversized flannels, oversized tee shirts, even oversized jeans, sucked in with a belt! And because it was grunge, it didn’t matter if the garment was worn out. Unfortunately I never got a pair of the coveted Doc Martens, but to this day, I still want a pair!

Pro tip- if you wear Doc Martens, make sure you understand lace code. If you ladder lace your boots with red laces, that can be interpreted as being pro- white supremacy. Another example: ladder lacing with lavender/purple laces is popular with the LGBTQ community. To be on the safe side, stick with neutral black laces.

the fashion color we used in our hair in the early to mid 90s was Kool Aid 😁 I was born in 80, so I was in middle school/early high school and this is by far my favorite 90's aesthetic. Its fun trying to recreate the looks for a more mature person.

Woah! I can't believe you're 31!! I would've guessed like 23, 25 at most :O You are so blessed!! Also, these videos that you do are super helpful, I really appreciate them. I'm going to college in the fall & I kinda want to reinvent myself before I go, I'm thinking a wicked combo between grunge, rock n roll, and geek chic, from your videos of course lol. Anyway, just wanted to show your awesome channel some love! Hope you're doing well :)

If you feel too self-conscious to wear it as yourself, tell yourself that you’re in character as another person playing the part. It creates enough separation & dissociation, initially, to help you to eventually BRIDGE that gap between the person you are and the person you wish to become. 😉

This is such a good video but you really should’ve mentioned the music. Grunge music came before the style. Grunge music is an alternative subculture and apart of the alternative scene, the alternative scene itself was mainly based on radical leftist political ideologies and just people who didn’t fit or want to fit in the mainstream society simply embracing that they’re different. Some examples of alternative subcultures would be goth, punk, emo and so on. The grunge music and it’s leftist political ideologies was the base for the grunge fashion.
