So many memories of that wonderful place. Done a wonderful job of resoring the buildings and the church, looks so white and red now, lol. Was not the case back in the day. They were just starting to restore the Whaling museum. So much has changed. Great to see my playground again :)

No trees or bushes could grow in such of tundra enviroment. Only some very special bushes like in the north of Norway exist but you can find them more likely in Falkland islands which is more similar to Argentinian Patagonia climate, fauna and flora. It has deteriated a lot since I was there in January 1995 for almost two weeks on an amateur radio expedition. Three of us operated as VP8SGP. The two sealing ships are still there and I see the whaling ship, the Petrel, is still there. The docks were intact and we used them to offload our supplies. We put our tents in the blubber factory, which I see is no longer intact nor the mechanic shed where we set up our radios. The barracks building was in much worse shape when we were there. The church looks the same, and the foot pump organ actually worked when we were there.

Stunning. Superb footage. I have a Mavic Air 2 and know all about the hazardous nature of flying in Sports mode (see previous comments & answers). I dumped mine straight into the Mediterranean, whilst trying to shoot a friend's boat at full speed (I was operating the drone from the boat). Ouch! Luckily the footage was captured on the app (and was actually quite good). But yes, superb flying and composition from Daniel, despite his freezing fingers. Excellent work.

Daniel excellent footage, really smooth - you’re a good drone pilot! Did you fly it in sport mode? I’m asking this judging by the speed. I was waiting longtime for your next video and here it is! Good complement to the 3D scanning ones. Please send more if possible. Thanks!
@DanielMcCurdyNZ
@DanielMcCurdyNZ 6 лет назад
Thank you ! No this was shot in Cinematic mode - flying at full speed, which is still very slow compared to Sports Mode. In Sports Mode the Mavic Air flies so fast that it goes beyond the limit of the gimbal to stabilise. In Sports Mode it would fly from the station to the survey base (along the road) in about 7 seconds. To be honest we spent most of our time doing aerial photography with the drone (in between scanning), so I didn't have too much time to play around with making nice videos. The wind was too high most of the time to be able to get stable footage, this was probably the most calm day we had and the winds picked up about an hour after this was taken. It was freezing cold during this flight too, so my fingers kept freezing up, hence the occasional jerking motion !! I'll have some really good scanning and drone videos up in a few weeks from South Georgia, Australia and USA :-)
@Drone700Flyer
@Drone700Flyer 6 лет назад
Daniel I don’t know why on my mavic the cinematic mode it flies really slow...some questions: many buildings look to be in very good shape (like the church for example) there is people still living there? I though it was a ghost town or something, abandoned long ago.
@DanielMcCurdyNZ
@DanielMcCurdyNZ 6 лет назад
Grytviken is the one station that has been "cleaned up' (asbestos removal, unsafe building removal etc...) so it serves as a cruise ship destination and many of the buildings are reused by either the government, British Antarctic Survey or South Georgia Heritage Trust. All the buildings on the right hand side of the station are the museum and related buildings. On the left are workshops and stores. The BAS base (at the end of the road) is lived in all year round by scientists and base staff. The Church is still used fairly regularly and is constantly maintained. Most buildings have had new roofs put on recently and most have been re-clad.

Yes you need a permit to fly a drone anywhere on or near the islands, partly since there is a very real risk of impacting bird populations. "Where does he get those wonderful toys?" Cool footage Dan. Find any evidence relating to the Falklands War there?

Haha thanks Dave. Actually there's a crashed Argentinian Puma helicopter in the distance, (a white blob really) appearing in frame on screen at 5:30 until 5:53. I think I have a specific video of that helicopter crash site, so I will upload that at some point for you :-).

I think you can probably only make it out in 4K resolution - it's just a blur in 1080p.

I was stationed on South Georgia for 4 months in 1991. They were just renovating the musuem then. I have a pic stood next to that downed argentinian helicopter.

Grytviken sound Swedish or maybe Norwegian.. In swedish it means Pot Bay. Is that because of the huge pots / barrels in the video lol? Or is it owned by scandinavian fishermen? Im watching this cause im part Chilean and very fascinated about Antarctica and the islands in and around Chile. And the name Grytviken really stood out to me since im Swedish too

Yeah, old pots that you can see some outside museum. The ones you see are tanks for storing oil from the whales and seals blubber that were in operation until 1965.
