I just bought a Yamaha LS36. It's pricey, but It's a terrific guitar! I have high end Martin's, Taylor's, & Takamines and now it's my favorite of them all. Believe the hype,, The concert body Ls-36 is a gem! It resonates like no other and it's a small body guitar. It's also well made in Japan and it's beautiful, ! Even the case is luxurious! A keeper for life!

Just bought a LL36 last week. Every bit as good as you described! Thanks for the review. The 36 is my fourth Yamaha. At age 69, this is my last one, well almost as I have a mahogany top and cocobolo rear and sides coming from a luthier in Honduras.

Hey JP. The Yamaha LL36 guitar is one of dream guitars to own. Especially since it is handcrafted by 12 or 13 craftsmen under the direction of the master luthier, there is something unique about it. It has a nice deep end to it, I find which isn't overpowering while still maintaining the mids and highs of the guitar. The guitar is aesthetically pleasing to look at. Hopefully, one day I get to try one. I live in Toronto, Ontario by the way

I’ve had a Yamaha LL16 for a few years, and truly enjoyed it. I finally came across an LL36, and bought it. I still love the 16, but oh my, the 36 is astounding. When played side by side, the depth and complexity of the tone on the 36 jumps out of the guitar. Love the smell and feel of the nitro finish on the 36 as well.

Sitting in front of me, a Huss and Dalton Custom OM Sinker Redwood top, Indian Rosewood b/s; a Lakewood M32 CP and a LL36. They all sound very beautifully and differently. Among them, LL36 is the lowest in prize but it's the biggest, sweetest, warmest, most important, it's most pleasant to my ears although my younger son loves the Lakewood most which has a very unique voice, a lot people misunderstood it doesn't sound good as it doesn't sound in the common way but it sound truly beautiful too. But I have to be honest to myself, LL36 is the best, at least among the three.

I did not realize these guitars have non scalloped X bracing. Love that low end rumble in Drop D. I just looked on reverb and I see three for sale, two in France and one in Japan. I’m in Oregon state (USA) and I’ll need to call a dealer to see if one can be sourced. I do own Martin, Guild, Alvarez and Blueridge and I might have to add one of these LL36’s to my Harem. 😂 Very beautiful instrument. Thanks J.P. (Post script) hope you are on the mend sir.

I had an L-25AT (amber tint).- it was perfect, except I didn't like the oval fret markers and have never been a fan of the standard Yamaha pick guard - sold it and just bought a limited edition Japan custom shop LA-28E that's on the way with snowflakes and no pick guard with the brown leather signed by the single builder....that said my L-25AT was brilliant.

I bought one of these guitars after playing one at a local shop--it was, I think, the only one for sale in Canada at the time. They are gorgeous and sound great--with one big caveat--and there are quirks that any buyer should beware of. 1: the top and bottom strings are oddly close to the edge of the rounded edge of the fingerboard. Yes, the fingerboard is about as comfy as they come, but it's really easy to slide the lower E string off the end of the fret, especially in challenging fingerings. I've gotten used to it--for the most part--and am getting more used to at with each passing day. 2: The guitar has a terrible wolf note at the low G. I didn't notice this in the guitar shop but it has grown into a bit of an annoying problem, which hopefully a luthier can fix, though that's a big ask. Obviously that note might not plague another LL36, but it does mine. Yamaha is not interested in warranty claims that concern "tone". That said, I still love the guitar, but am bummed about the wolf note.

Thanks for a very interesting review of this amazing guitar! Very useful. It made me look for one and I bought it unseen from Japan - I live in Austria - and you are completely right. It plays almost itself and sounds incredible, even compared to my Collings CJ IRW and even more to my Collings D42A!!!! Also have a Solid Sigma SOMR45VS, which is a beautiful little guitar and a Martin D35 1970 and 1968 D35S Custom. This one beats all of them in playing and in sound, vibrations and construction and finish! I,m almost broke now, but hardly regret it :-) What I am still wondering about is: is the extra money worth it, it would cost getting a LL56 compared a fantastic LL36??? Thanks a lot Mr. JP!

JP, thanks for this great review. You also play terrific and that's what we need for a good guitar review. I have an old L25 from 1978/1980 but I think your L36 sounds wider and warmer. About the strings: you mentioned that they would be better with Elixir strings. I can not agree with that. Elixir strings sounds too sterile and soulless to my opinion, I tried them on many guitars. I would recommend Martin Treated which have no plastic coating, they sounds more organic and they last longer than regular Martin strings. You should give that a try, really. Let me know what you think of it. Another thing I would like to know if this Yamaha can beat the Eastman guitars. Keep on playing! I subscribed :)

I bought a Hiroshi Sakurai LS36 10 years ago, mainly because I thought it was cheap, it was an ex-demo guitar from Yamaha's main supplier in London and cost me £1,100. Like most old geezers I had several guitars already (some far more expensive) but found I only ever picked up the LS36 so I have given or put the rest away. Some people think the neck is a little slim, obviously I don't. Another caution, the finish marks easily but since I have no intention of selling it I don't mind that too much either.

Hi John! Is the neck shape on the LL16 the same as the LL36? I just bought a LL16D and it really blew me away. What an awsome instrument. This must be the best buy for that price. The only thing I've done is that swapped the saddle and nut to bone and swapped the piezo pickup to the L. R. Baggs Lyric. The sound changed and it sound more like a LL26. Hey there. Curious about your L-15. Is it from the 80's and stamped on the inside" made in Taiwan"? Just asking, I think the L-15 (Spruce and Rosewood, all solid) was produced early to mid 80's. I have an 1981 L-10A (Tiawan, spruce and rosewood), and an 1983 LL10 (Japan, Spruce and mahogany). Not a lot of info on them, but they are great. I did contact Yamaha Canada and they were able to provide me info. Very cool. Perhaps an email to Yamaha may get you some info if your still looking. Hope you still have the Yammie and are enjoying it. Take care.

I have a first generation L-15. Here is the specs etc. 1975 Yamaha L-15 Hand-signed (and built) by renowned Yamaha luthier Terumi "Terry" Nakamoto, This is first Generation guitar that Yamaha made, same time as the L53 of John Denver. This has to be one of the finest Japanese designed guitars ever made. The online reviewers go nuts about them. I agree it has a special something all it's own. This is NOT the L-15A which is made in Taiwan, it’s the real deal made in Japan! Not like Martin or Taylor, this guitar has a special sound that makes me feel relaxed every time I play it. It has such a well broken in sound and feel that it has to be played to be appreciated. It has a sweet timbre and is inspiring to play. The bass response is exceptional and it responds to the lightest touch. Because there were 2 cracks in the back ( 20 years ago) , and at the time were repaired by a luthier, since then, it has been kept in a well humidifed environment. No further cracking. (See Pics) In addition, Morris CP-3 passive pickup is attached. This guitar has aged beautifully, and has a one of a kind personality. There are some scratches and scars, Neck is straight, Bridge and saddle are perfect. (See Pics) Top: Rare Ezo spruce! Sides: Solid Mahogany Back: Three piece solid mahogany / rosewood / mahogany Action: 1F:2.25mm, 6F 2.75mm Truss Rod: smooth in both directions Tuners: Gold plating You can see details here: yamahaguitars.nl/facts-figures/the-l-series/ @@stevebernard221

I remember in college, one of my friends (who got me started on playing) was an international student from spain, and his mother's side came from luthiers of classical guitars, and he told a story of he was at the meeting with his uncle and the best luthiers in Spain, only his uncle admitted that the best Yamaha classicals and flamenco guitars were louder than the Spanish made ones, and kept the tone, and they should learn from them. The other luthiers said Yamaha team was being tainted as they made "American Cowboy guitars." and they would be the laughingstock of the flamenco and classical world. The snobbery still goes on, but the classical /flamenco players that know good guitars will say hand made Yamaha is one of the best. Plus if you name all the top classical guitar luthiers to the average person off the street, they'll won't know who they are until you say Yamaha.

Such a great channel! I enjoy every one of your videos. One quick question: what would you choose, SIGHT UNSEEN: a new Yamaha LL16D or a 1968 Harmony H1260 (in great form, neck reseted, etc)? (I'm poor and these are my two favourite options). Cheers!

Yamaha LL16D. Too many unknown issues in an old guitar to buy sight unseen.

@@JPCormier That's what I thought. I've asked around to see if anybody with some knowledge would say: "Grab the Harmony no matter what!!". Hasn't been the case. Thank you very much for the response. You've helped me a lot. Cheers!

To me the highs of this guitar have more of a sheen than the 28. The some Martins have a glassy clink to the high notes that I don’t want in the studio. Might carry better live at a distance but I don’t want that near a microphone. Old Martins and D18s are better.
