GSX Block Prep 6 - 4g63 Block Pre-assembly

Here we go over 4 parts groups that cover the cylinder block and your preliminary build preparations. Gasket sets, sealants, the valve cover assembly and the engine block section. Really my rocker cover section has been extensively covered in other videos, and heavily modified, but I never went over that parts group in detail for everyone else, so it's here to get everyone caught up.
I have 4K stills of these parts groups available at Patreon.com (not on the upload date, though) and when you view this video 1:1, it's easy to read all the detail under the part numbers. I am not the only one capable of connecting to a 4K display and taking a screen shot, but I will be including specifications of everything I can measure to help you identify everything in your pile of parts, and to help you determine what you can substitute if that is important with your goals. The information shared here is all from my notes, references, and things I researched prior to even ordering my parts. A lot of work goes into my preparations to ensure I have everything I need to do the job correctly once the day arrives. It's a lot of work to do this for a build, so I figured I'd share it for others taking the same journey.
Every single person supporting me on Patreon no matter their contribution is helping me pull the pants off my 4g63 build for the whole world to see, and to keep 'em off. Covering this level of detail is tedious; but if it helps people save their DSMs, then every last one of those Patrons supporting my production are who made their success possible. It sucks to throw my life away editing video in a chair, but this is so much bigger than me. I get it.
RU-vid is as close as I will get to social media. I don't view social media as a positive force in anyone's life, but my friends and family often text and email me screenshots of things they find about this channel in other places. It's hilarious! I can't explain the effect this has on people. It's an accomplishment to be meme'd, but it's an even greater accomplishment to discover that all the meme's are funny, positive, and intelligent. I have always put everything I make from ad revenue and Patreon right back into it to improve the equipment, parts, tools and projects you see here and I hope it shows. So if you wish to contribute to what I do here... to help clean up at least one side of one street on the internet, then for as little as $1 per video you can join the rest of those fine people at the end of the video and gain access to private discussions, technical data and additional content at www.patreon.com/jafromobile.
Mean, dirty balance shaft removal:
ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LR-1adDayQY.html
GSX Parts video (most of the internals and plans for my whole build):
ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CpgZ0_DZCRg.html
6-bolt short block rebuild parts (gaskets & non-reusable parts):
ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ofWnFXkix3w.html
It's nice to be putting some of the parts from the last 2 video links to work.

Jafro, having been a dealer mechanic there are few that even come close to the level of detail you achieve. Furthermore an engine only MIGHT get this level of detail at a specialty shop (there are a lot of dodgy ones out there). I'm glad you're showing everyone the steps of due diligence for a successful build so they can take the fate of their investment into their own hands. Can't wait for the next video man.

I typed a bigger longer thing in response to you, because I know you'd connect with it. I know you'd have been sitting there reading it, nodding your head and going "yes, exactly", except that 90% of everyone else who reads it might either think I'm crazy, old fashioned or just plain nuts. So I'll just summarize it in saying that today's mechanics really get the short end of the stick because nobody takes responsibility to fix the things they wear out or break anymore. People have become merely operators, and they view and use their cars as appliances rather than any sort of self expression anymore. Cars are dollar signs now, they're no longer art. I forgive mechanics that don't exercise my level of detail because they have a difficult and often thankless job mopping up the messes other people create. Day in, day out, that wears you down. I experienced it long enough to realize it would kill the hobby I enjoyed the most. They don't get to do what I'm lucky enough to be doing here, to take something they own and love and own responsibility for the heads it turns, the noises it makes, and the numbers it produces on race day. Even the way they're paid for the work they do discourages this level of detail. If they did it, they'd be working for free. So to me, it's not tedious. It's a gift that I get to do any of it at all. Thank you for your vote of confidence. Having walked in your shoes, I agree with every word you said. I also know that there are tens of thousands of those few people you described who watch these videos. I know when I'm in a conversation with one of them, and I even get some of my best new tips and techniques from their comments. :)

Couldn't agree more. A build like this is a labour of love - so you don't mind taking the time to do it right. People won't pay for work like this very often, so techs have to cut corners and rush because the $ is king to the customer. But if you want more power than an engine was designed to have, and you want it to hold together for a significant length of time, then...as they say, the devil's in the details. As for people treating cars as appliances...it reminds me of my brother's old FIAT 124 Sports (BC) that everyone said would be a moneypit. He serviced the car religiously, and by the book - no more and no less. Not once did it let him down with anything major, but some small jobs (plugs, points, etc.) could have _become_ major if they'd been left for a few weeks. Since then, I've found most cars are like that - look after them and they generally look after you. Just don't get complacent, don't wait a week or two for that oil change or fresh set of plugs, and it usually won't bite you in the wallet - or at least, no where near as bad a bite as when the problem cascades into a waterfall of more and more serious issues.

You can replace the "puff" with the replacement ones they give for pipe glue (last time i was in Canada, it was like 1 dollar or there about for a bag of 10 at the Homeless Despot (as in, that's the only spot i saw bags of it, but they do exist). You can drive a Fplug without the die set, but you need to get crafty, AKA, you use washers. Small ones inside, Big one on the lip, then a bolt stuck through a socket that just pokes out enough to hold the lot aligned. You wack the bolt and you're home. Advanced Scrooges will spot weld their washers in a packet. I'm lazy Scrooge, so i just taped mine together with 3M double faced tape.

In high school I put together an old honda d-series motor to learn about engines in our auto shop course. Put the spun-to-hell-and-back main bearings back in whilst soaked in grit, grime, and oil. Used some plastigage on them and torqued it down, didn't squish at all on 2 of the bearings and were grievously under-spec on the others. Poor little bastard ran and spat flames with all its heart, and I would wager that it will continue to do so for years.

I had a d15B8 that held redline with worn out rings for 15 minutes sitting still trying to kill it for a video and though it smoked like the space shuttle, it wouldn't die. So I drove it 30 feet into a service bay, put it up on a lift and the distributor seized once it cooled down. That was fine. I had a freshly-built d15b7 going into it. That thing made 40 more horses than the 8-valve and got 44mpg hwy. For such dinky lightweight engines, they sure are tough.

jafro it's this kind of stuff that make me feel like I owe you money for all of your knowledge. Jason drew gave me the confidence to awd swap my gst. Now that that's complete, it's you that's giving me the confidence to build my first engine. I'm picking up a 90k mile unmodified 1998 4g63t engine this weekend to build and one day, drop into my eclipse. This has been a dream of mine for 20 years and its youtubers like you who've given me the knowledge/advise/confidence to learn and tackle these things myself. It's either right, or it's not. Complaining only turns opportunities into a burden. It's not going to fix itself when you don't show up. These are the unwritten rules that outline every struggle we face, and acceptance is the key to overcoming the mindset that any struggle can test you with. The sooner you accept any thing for being exactly what it is at that time, the sooner your inner peace returns, and the sooner you show up and start to make a difference. Acceptance is how you install patience under any circumstance. It's how we learn to operate under fire. I can tell you get it. I watch your videos and know your work ethic, I know you get it. It's a simple recipe, but that's why it works, and why you can serve it up hot or cold on the side with anything else.

The stationary part that the bearing shell sits in is the main bearing bore. The part that rotates inside the bearing, separated by the oil film, is the journal. I may be wrong. Thanks man, really love your videos. So glad to see your finding time to produce new ones. These Mitsubishi engines are used ( NA) in a LOT of different applications, in my case Clark fork trucks. I rebuild a lot of them,it seems some people can't grasp the concept of a cooling system. After watching your channel , I might have to build a boosted version. Na. Thanks Jafro

Fork trucks for decades were predominantly 4g63 and 4g64 across many brands. Crown used them. All the Mitsubishi stuff, of course. They really got a lot of mileage out of them. If you wanted to run your DSM on propane, you could get all the factory parts off a fork truck. A boosted fork truck, formerly NA... LOL! OMG that's genius. Just be warned that engine's set up tighter than a clam with lockjaw. You'll have to do extensive honing and ring filing to loosen it up or you'll run out of ring gap and decapitate your pistons. We exceeded the gap of the rings by double of what's required for a DSM and still killed the engine. I think it's the heat causing not just the rings but the pistons to swell up bigger than the bore's clearance. The older, high-mileage worn out engines took to it better than the young, fresh tight JDM engines. I won't tell you it can't be done, just that you'll have to accept that tightness as a potential point of failure, and that it's hard to overcome without either an aftermarket piston or a metallurgist who wears a Honda logo on his lab coat. I can't find specs for thermal expansion of the factory pistons, and we killed 4 engines experimenting trying to figure it out. Perhaps if we had more self control with the boost controller there wouldn't have been any problems at all? 5-7 PSI is all I'd be willing to throw at it. We were frequently around 15. It won't take what I throw at my Hyundai. Not even once. But when you do, it's REALLY fast once. I think Bisimoto makes a set of pistons for this thing. Given enough time and interest I might be able to find some other piston that fits it, or could fit it with a little work... but I lost track of Foofy's owner and where that car is today so I haven't been looking.

@@Jafromobile thanks for the info! The engine is a 98 f23a w/220k on it, last summer I threw a $700 Amazon piston n ring kit on it, it was a clean engine but used oil/had blowby b/c the rings were siezed/gummed/gooped into the lands. Prob coulda got away with some type of piston soaking to loosen the crud but I went thru it anyway. I have no idea of piston/wall clearance but it does have some skirt noise...altho idk if that is a honda/alu block thing or not (it's my 1st honda). Ring gap is whatever...? I didn't check it when I assembled the deal as it is just a 1000 dolla driver. If'n I do a dsm setup I'd try to keep it @5-8 lbs anyway seeing as the Amazon kit is an unknown. Thanks!!!!! Copy the original diagram to a clear sheet for an overhead projector. Then use an overhead projector to shine the document onto the wide board and then trace it.

JonnyBMK Overcomplicated old school. A simple computer projector does the job.

You know Jaf I like your videos they are well thought out and totally make sense.... Now here is what I see in a deeper meaning to your videos I can use those same techniques with my VG30DE granted it's a Nissan 6 cylinder vs 4 cylinder. But the process is the same. Granted you can find lots of videos on LS, Ford, GM & Mopar. But they are built vastly different from those Asia.

Yessir! You get it. The tools and techniques are the same. I could be all generalized for everyone, but I set a better example if I just do one thing well. After all, that's what everyone else is trying to do. ...but if you do happen to run across a 4g63 though... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I finally know who does the drawings of the exploded views in all manuals... It's you. Damn that's impressive drawing skills for what's essentially a quick demo that's gonna be relevant to maybe less than 100 of your viewers (but damn interesting nonetheless).

I have to get a huge wall white board someday. This reminds me of history/Government class I once done an oral report and drew out freehand entire scene with extra pages for the Boston tea party etc. I'm guessing that it took you a few hours each section for your prep build.

Quick tip RE Oil squirter crush washers. Order more than 8.. I had several of mine 'tear' or deform when torquing to spec, with correctly prepared surfaces. Pain in the ass delay if you only order 8 and tear one or two..
