GSX Block Prep Part 1 [1080HD]

Preparation for powder coating and Glyptal application. Audio track is an original performance by Rojo Del Chocolate.
My block is being powder coated rather than painted. It's just something I do. The GSX had it on the last block so it's getting it again.
Since the tools are so similar and the mess is the same, I'm going ahead and preparing it for the Glyptal application as well. These 2 coatings will require being baked separately. The powder coating is baked on at a hotter temperature than the Glyptal, so it's going first.
The surface preparation instructions for Glyptal is as follows:
Surface to be painted should be dry and free from dirt, wax, grease, rust and oil. Remove all grease and oil by washing surface with mineral spirits. Wipe or scrape off all loose dirt, rust or scale.
The last sentence is what's covered in this video. The 2nd sentence happens next (although it's already degreased), and I'll get it back from powder coat with it in the state described in sentence #1 completed. If following these instructions to the letter of the law.
Second and third opinions in... the main journal is fine.
You'll notice that I didn't coat the main caps, or "suitcase handles". I'm not going to. You bang around on these installing and removing them, and I don't want to risk chipping them once they're coated. They're below the windage area, and there will also be an un-coated main bearing girdle down there.
This video covered 25 hours of actual work. Yes, I kept changing into the same filthy clothes every shoot because I wanted it to look consistent. You have to take your time doing this kind of work, and be VERY VERY CAREFUL! If for some reason you're crazy enough to attempt what I do in this video, you do so at your own risk. This is an elective treatment that I've never done, but I am by no means the first person to do it. I'm learning about it just like the rest of you.

im surprised your not aware of the 2 things you got when you did this procedure..because you spoke of it in your "7 bolt diagnosis" vid..cleaning this block up in the manner you did with that conical carbide burr was just like peening the block to relieve internal casting stress..making the block more resilient..removing the flash and casting burrs removes a lot of internal resonance points that can lead to block fatigue/fracture and other issues that you mentioned in your other vid..so kudos to for taking the time to do this..dont beat yourself up on the time it took..you got more out of it than you realized :) btw i like your style..these vids are worth watching..

When grinding in the bottom end of the block, leave the old bearings in place. They will give you more protection than painters tape and you won't have to go stand in the corner. Don't have the old bearings? Go on ebay and buy the cheapest set you can find. There are always cheap knockoffs from China that OEM fanatics would never use and are cheaper than factory or high performance shops offer. I know its messy, but sand blasting will give you a nice"tack" to apply your glyptal to. Just be sure to blow all the sand out.

Nice videos. To some doing a prep, this is known as "therapy". Feels good taking pride in a job well done. The only real pain comes when engine eventually blows up. Didn't watch all videos but while you have grinder and files out, journals and caps should be relieved. Before Glyptal came along RustOLeum red primer used to coat innards. Glyptal also works good preventing creep with threaded electrical connections. For some, building a small extension the size of a small pallet outside on back of building to house compressor cuts noise and frees up space.

Not sure if anyone posted this. I didn't go through all the 100 comments. You could put a set of old junker bearings in the block. You can even put the cap side(bottom) ones in so it would cover up the oil passages to prevent shavings from entering. You would have to try pretty hard to gouge those down to the main journals vs a thin layer of tape.

I don't know if internal coating is necessary since the oil will prevent the inner from rusting. altrough smoothing surfaces from impurities inside, specialy the oil channels do great things to the good function of it as a whole. faster lubrification does miracles

+Pablo Mini It's a 40 gallon Central Pneumatic upright. In other words, Harbor Freight. They used to make this 40 gallon 240V model and I bought it on clearance for $399. No coupon. 110 PSI. I wanted it because it was 240V and because it had a twin-cylinder oiled compressor with a 14.2 CFM recovery rate. I've kept it oiled, but it does nowhere close to that anymore. It's doing about 5 or 6 making banging noises.. It needs work. I've done some grueling jobs on it. Using it Jafro style made it only last about 7 years, but divided up on all the jobs it was well worth it. My point with it was to demonstrate that it doesn't matter what you spend if you can just find one with a good recovery rate... but with cheap tools, you're going to get what you paid for. It's loud. It develops leaks from crapmetal regulating parts, has never been well balanced, and eventually shakes itself to pieces. At that price, who cares? It's still going and I'm going to run it to death just like I did with the Hyundai and the GSX. I would have traded 2 or 3 CFM for a whole lot less db. Look up the Airmax HRA25-12 Air Compressor if you've already dropped anchor and can afford it. They're stupid-expensive bushed and balanced, 25 horsepowered, 208, 230 or 660 VAC 3-phased, magnetic started, self-draining, low oil emission workhorses. They will last you a lifetime and service parts will be available forever because it's a medical-grade unit. It's a 175PSI 90 cfm 125 gallon compressor that runs so quiet you can mumble a conversation to someone half-way across the shop and they will easily hear you. You will hear them mumble back even if you're standing right next to it. It's amazing.

Now we know why such careful grinding is required. Once lapse of focus is all it takes to screw up big time. Let's say that it did put a small gouge it. Why would that make a difference since there is a large journal going to be mounted on top of it. The shaft rides on the journal and not that surface. Obviously you don't want any scratches but I don't see what the big deal is about for something so miniscule. Only thing missing was a homemade dunce cap. That would have been funny. :)

Dude....... Theres a fine line between being a perfectionist, and having OCD, taking the burs of with a grinder shouldn't take more than 20min, but hay, I'm not hating on you, you'v got the same passion for small turbo cars I've got and I'm sure it turned out to be a sweet little engine, keep wrenching.
@Jafromobile
@Jafromobile 8 лет назад
I'm not just taking the burs off. This is stage 1 pre-burn-off oven preparation for a Glyptal application and powder coating. The car this engine is going in is an 8-time trophy-winning show car. The judges are the OCD perfectionists and I'm just ensuring I stay a step ahead of them because I'd like to someday put this thing back in the show circuit, even better than it was. I'm trying to raise the bar on myself. I learned a lot from the previous powder coating on this car's previous engine. I found flaws that occurred from not doing these kinds of treatments. These treatments are permanent so I'm pushing myself for the absolute best results possible. What I am guilty of… is having done something and conquered it once… and then pushing myself to do it even better. Even in cases where my goals aren't visible or tangible, I challenge myself like this in *all things in life*. I always strive to do better even when I've left the competition in the dust. Once I get around to assembling this monster, you'll agree that it's the most beautiful engine to ever have its entire assembly filmed and uploaded to RU-vid. My efforts will only add to the car's character. It's not about me. It's for the car, it's for the judges, and it's for the fans viewing it right here on RU-vid. :)
@donrosscojoe5014
@donrosscojoe5014 8 лет назад
+Jafromobile Arrrr it's going on a show car, now that makes more sense to me, Iv only seen 2 of your other vids, the tear down with the spun/screwed bearing, and that coating inside the head dose look amazing, if you could engineer a viewing window into the rocker cover or get a clear plastic one made somehow. Yeh don't mind me man, that comment was just a light hearted dig at the most epic de burring (I know it's not that) I'v ever seen. Hope it all comes together nicely, with the attention to detail in this vid I'm sure it will.

So polishing the cylinder walls is a benefit too?
@Jafromobile
@Jafromobile 9 лет назад
No, not the cylinder walls. Just the crankcase. It improves oil drain back to the pan in order to add a tiny bit more oil volume on top of the oil pickup so that it doesn't create a vortex and suck air. Slow drain back means a shallower pan with the engine running. It's not a design flaw of engines to have a rough interior, after all, the oil level takes that into consideration. But what about engines built to run flat-out for 10 seconds straight at rpms 2000 higher than its original design? That oil is not hanging out in the pan. If you polished your combustion chamber, your rings would stop working. I just did this to the crankcase. ;)

ThatDanDude Perhaps I should explain this better? The crosshatch on the cylinder walls is what holds oil, and it reduces the surface area of the bore that contacts the rings as they sweep the chamber. Compression relies on oil viscously-filling in that gap. Once the cross-hatch is gone, there's nothing for the oil to stick to, and the rings scrape it dry. Friction increases, wearing out the rings faster, and compression is also lost through that gap. That cross-hatch texture in the combustion chambers is critical to your engine's efficiency and performance.

***** I think Dan thought the inside of the crankcase was the 'cylinder walls', fyi.

JinEteru No, I know where the cylinder is. There is a lot of engine builders on RU-vid, not all take the time to polish the crankcase web. Thought maybe he had a trick up his sleeve unbeknownst to the rest. The crosshatch is pretty important. I do know that much.

That's meticulous work. Is there a benefit from it? Your an expert at polishing. I do get that.

Sharp casting edges are potential weak spots for cracks to form, smooth surfaces aids oil returning to oil pan, reduces rough surfaces that promote varnish build up.

Seems to me Glyptal would cause the head to run a bit hotter, is this not the case?
@Jafromobile
@Jafromobile 6 лет назад
Sure, it could potentially... IF the engine and oil cooling systems are insufficient for the application. You can offset where the cooling occurs by upgrading other thermal systems. With a thick 3-row aluminum radiator and a thermostatically-controlled external air-to-oil cooler it shouldn't be a problem on my car. My engine's cylinder head also has a pretty elaborate water jacket around the combustion chambers so it's easier for the cooling upgrades I have to be effective at offsetting that difference.

Jafromobile ok, so it may not add much heat load due to insulation, i thought glyptal was a good insulator, which is why i asked.
@Jafromobile

It is an excellent insulator, but not the kind you're thinking. It's electrical insulator paint. It resists 50,000 volts per mil. That's a pretty astonishing property for a paint coating. 2 coats of it isn't really thick enough to block all that much heat. If the oil drains faster, though... it will spend less time touching the part that's hot and therefore absorb less of the heat. In the chemical testing video I made, we did a race to demonstrate what that difference is. There's a difference in drain speed, but it's not all that drastic of a difference.

Ah, but usually things that isulate voltage also insulate, but i see your point.

I remove the flash on every block I build. Inside and out. I find it unsightly too.
