Thats an impressive find. Great lesson on paying attention to what we are doing when fixing this stuff. It really pays to not take for granted what the factory does and keep an open mind. Thank you for this!!
2014 Shelby GT-500 owner here. Most definitely Not going to tear into mine. Engine purrs as smooth and as quiet as your grandmother Ole fashioned Singer Sewing Machine. All the while producing 673 RWHP at 665 lb/ft of Twist. Slightly over 755 FWHP. (Following mods... a 2.4" VMP S/C pulley, JLT C/A Intake, CORSA EXTREME Performance Axle-Back Exhaust, Shelby Air Filter, Lund Tune & TB. Thanks for the heads up though and I'll keep an ear out for this. Appreciate it man. 😆😎👨🏽✈️✈🌍🏁🐍
So the tensioner problem was on the driver’s side only? Good find Mike! Makes the purchase even sweeter. Enjoy it, my friend. Maybe I can get a ride in it soon. 😜
Incredible diagnosis and find … beautiful car. I’m partial - I found a perfect super low mile ‘14 last year and I absolutely love it. Seems this would have been a detectable issue from day one - no? What I mean is, based upon what you found - it didn’t change over time … it was there from date of build. Am I missing something? Great job!!
You would be correct. It had to be noisy from day one...certainly was noticeable on this car. I loved that car too, but I just didn't like the blue stripes. I thought I could get past it, but couldn't. That's why I own a new one now. Enjoy your car and Thanks for watching!!!
I got a piston skirt broke in a 2009 gt500 right now, with silver metal flakes with no copper flakes, all aluminum in color.oil pressure is great, and car has a very very slight shake but not a miss its not the same it moves hard to explane, that little vibration is a unbalance piston and the knock is piston knock, pulled both valve covers cam and heads perfect.no plastic so rules out timing guide, compression test 175-180 all cylinders except drivers side 3 hold back from front tested at 141 dry(178 wet)sorry i stopped typing as soon as you said timeing tensioner, this is crazy.not my problem got metal in oil, starting engine removal monday, car black/white stripes black interior very sharp car, took me 2 days ruling out and good oil pressure.good job guys i will check this.
Love your garage & mustang. I have a 2014 Gt500 and a 2007 Shelby GT. I’m in the Fayette Co. if it’s possible I would check out your mustang collection
@@mustangmike5324 thanks Sir, no haven’t had those issues, thanks to God, but 2010 is a one off year and difficult to get some items for my car!! It’s the Bastard Child of Shelby’s 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Thanks!! Just trying to pass along some info. Some things are not what they seem...even to the professionals. Troubleshooting is the key!! Thanks for watching!!
I bought an old 1995 Lincoln with the 4.6L 4 valve that had a weak tensioner so the chain rattled for a second on start up. The owner must have thought it was a bearing because I got it cheap and drove it another 40k miles before I sold it.
Hey Michael, well if your car isn't making a noise there probably isn't a problem. Mike's GT500 was making a noise, and we had to figure it out. Like the video shows the Drivers side tensioner was prevented from fully extending. So what we had was the Cam chain was never tensioned correctly and it was causing an unusual noise. If you don't have any noise yours is probably fine. This was just one of those weird problems that happens every once and while. We haven't seen a whole lot of talk on the forums about this so we are of the opinion that this is a fairly rare incident. Thanks for watching and the comment.
No noise, no problems. Simple as that! We wanted to get this out as a possible issue on some Shelby's. Havent seen anything like this in the forums or RU-vid. Don't ever rely on the dealership to shoot things straight... Thanks for watching!!!
I’ve got a 13 that makes a tapping noise, doesn’t do it all the time, mostly after warmed up. I’ve searched online and found a few posts on forums regarding this 5.8 tapping noise but there’s never really a cure or damage from it. I was wondering if what you’ve found is what I am hearing. Would you happen to have a video clip of the noise? Great job on the fix!
We didn't get a sound clip...sorry. The noise did get louder after it warmed up, but was always there. It's possible you have the same issue. Try to isolate the noise to a cylinder by pulling the plug on each coil. If sound still remains or has no change in sound...could be it?? Old school ways can help too. Try a long screwdriver or a stethoscope to help pinpoint the location of the noise...could be a tensioner or idle pulley. Hope this may help in some way...
Thank you for the tips,! I will certainly try. The best way I can describe the sound is kind of like two marbles hitting each other. I made a video clip of it, maybe I’ll try and upload it.
@@johnguardi2711 that's a good description of what I was hearing too. It was half speed of crankshaft rotation..give or take. Just try to figure where the noise is most likely and think about the speed of the knock and what it possibly could be. Baby steps to figure out what the problem may be. Isolate and investigate. Good luck. I'll try to help if I can....
I have a 14 GT500 and when it’s hot and I’m backing into the garage sounds like a very faint typewriter tick underneath the car. I can’t hear it at all from top of engine, is that what yours was sounding like?
If I was the original owner. That dealership would be finding me another low mile GT500 at their expense. I hate to imagine what he end up selling the car for vs it's TRUE value.
The guy wasn't the original owner. I think the car kept being sold at auction for the engine noise. The guy I got it from was the one that got stuck with it and was pissed when Ford quoted the price for repairs. Hated it for him. He made out considering...I could have been the unlucky one. My labor is cheap, but still. Thanks for watching!!!
@@mustangmike5324 true...but as a mechanic this is gonna bug me until I can see for myself...then again I've learned if it ain't broke don't try n fix it.
Do it...it's an awesome ride. Just enjoy the car the way it is...it's plenty fast and will always retain a better value over time being left alone. Thanks for watching!!! Good luck on finding the perfect one!!
You would be correct. The new shelby is iconic silver. I traded up...the 2020 gt500 is a beast! More power and more comfortable! Never was really crazy about the blue stripes, but I didn't want to change the car. Great car, but the new one is even better IMHO!!
