This is so great. Even though you haven't started building anything yet, I know this series is going to be 10x better than any of the other RU-vidrs are doing. Very excited to see this!
Seen Project Binky by Bad Obsession Motorsport? They professionally make a vid look as though it is made by a couple of knock about blokes. Started in 2014 still unfinished. Subject of many jokes all over RU-vid. Many channels on YT have Bad Obsession Motorsport mugs in the background. Binky is legendary.
Mate, that took a couple hours to unbox and lay it all out initially, just for that thumbnail. I just had the crazy idea pop into my head and I had to do it!
This was really great ! I encourage any viewers to share, like, and comment. This series should be getting 1MM views per episode : every car guy/ girl I'm sure would love to do a project like this. Well done Dan ! Greetings from Prague, CZ
G'day Dan, great vid. If you want particular coloured wheels you could always ask the local spray painter, I've done this in the past. Take a sample rim and your photo in and have a chat, can't hurt. My dad had a saying " you don't take a sick horse to a plumber." Hope this helps. Love your work.
Glad I watched whatever series of videos resulted in your build being suggested. A GT40 would be an amazing build and I look forward to watching you put yours together. There's a lot of good ambitious projects being documented on RU-vid right now.
Great project, just found your videos by mistake and had a look at all till now, getting tired of all this Copart rebuild, this is for sure something I look forward to see! Congrats and good luck with the build
Dan looking good. There a few builders on RU-vid that I am watching. Here are today’s question. 1. Is there any luggage storage available? 2. How many hours, weeks, or months do you anticipate the build taking? 3. How or where did you get the skill sets to build this super car? 4. Are you thinking of installing and automatic fire suppression system? Not a question but you might think about having the part of the wheel you wanted orange, powder coated. Great Video thanks
1. No luggage storage really. 2. I expect an approx 12 month build. 3. I've not built a car before but somewhat technical / analytical mindset. 4. I have not considered a fire suppression system. Yes I would be looking to powdercoat the wheels if did proceed with the orange centres.
Nice to see this , I am planning to do a project like this in the Netherlands for years ! . I wait and see how you are doing Iam a restorer of classic ford mustang and have done a lot the past 50 year in fabrication .
Hot damn!! It’s a GT 40! So tired of all these Ferrari and Lamborghini rebuilds. This is a full build from scratch. You got our attention from the US, Dan.
Just caught up, it looks like a great build. A small tip, will help if you have more lighting in the garage as a single light casts too many deep shadows. I went from 3 strip lights down the middle of my garage to 3 rows of 3 units covering the whole garage.
Thanks for the support and feedback Duncan! I'm looking into getting probably an additional 5 LED fluro lights installed, but need to wait until I get out of lockdown to get an electrician to install them, damn covid! (also looking to upgrade to 5500k LED tubes as suggested by another subscriber)
Nice one, a project we can only dream about. A long with project Binky and the electric supercar channel this may be one of my new favourites, far from the generic rebuild channels. Good luck from UK.
Check is you can set the audio recording level to manual, not auto gain control. Also check if you can record in mono audio not stereo, this might be what's causing the weird fluctuating audio sound.
Great video!! Super detailed and like how you included the cost of it to give the viewers a real taste of everything that's going on. Super keen to see more of it 🙌
Better sound, but I suspect you're also getting some audio from the camera's mic. There's a bit of phase cancellation or "comb filtering" going on! The project itself and the level at which you are working is awesome though!! :)
Thanks for the feedback Peter. I'm not sure what was happening with the audio in this episode, but after playing around with the settings a bit more, I think I finally got it sorted in the latest episodes. Glad you are enjoying the project though!
G’day Dan and Wifey… Congratulations on your first 10,000 Subs, 🍾 You haven’t even started building yet 😂 Really looking forward to watching the build, good luck and keep these Episodes coming 🤤👍
Hi, that looks the best quality kit I've seen, and so well packaged. Looks a cut above what's available in the UK, love the way the chassis is all tig welded together. Do they ship overseas? Cheers.
You can look into audio compression for video, this will equalize the volume from clip to clip if you're interested. It's an extra step during editing.
Now that's a big model kit! Glue not included...lol. Have you given any thought as to the time frame on finishing? Good luck with the build, it looks like fun. Steve in Texas.
Great start to the video series. I have also prep'ed my garage and am looking to start building my own GT40 soon. I will use this as a rough guide. I don't have as much money as you, so will have to buy my kit in multiple stages over 5-10 years. Given you have paid 100 grand for the kit, why did you not get the steering wheel you wanted and have the wheels painted orange? One point that concerns me: you asked the factory to cut the body - why not do it yourself? You strike me as not wanting to get your hands too dirty so why take on a project like this?
For such a small cost to have them do the cuts was cheap insurance to make sure it was done right in my opinion. As for the wheels, the manufacturer could not supply me the BRM's with orange centres.
After listening with better stereo headphones it sounds like the room is causing lots of sound to bounce of the walls and make it sound all wonky. By chance do you have the original audio from the camera and from you new mic both on? Meaning you have two audio sources in your video?
I did look at that but camera manual notes that when the external mic is plugged in it automatically overrides the camera mic. There is a lot of echo in the room, I've installed a few acoustic boards to try and reduce this.
G'day Michael, unfortunately I don't have access to a completed kit by this manufacturer near me, but I am starting to build a network with other local builders, so if I get the chance I will look to incorporate into a future episode.
The original GT40 was notoriously unstable aerodynamically. Do you know if the manufacturer of this kit has address that issue? The issue is that the GT40 had a tendency to lift up at high speeds.
Not sure I'll be hitting those excessive speeds, at least no on the road, and I don't intend to track it often either. But in answer to your question I don't know, these kits do get tracked regularly though so I assume it's not too bad.
Wow, gulp, that price would be hard to swallow, but definitely looks like the parts list is extensive, looking forward to this. What did that transmission run ya ? Dan, I'll be watching close. Didn't take long to smash that sub button. Don't know if your aware, your mic was cutting in and out.
Thanks mate, yea not having much luck with audio, think I might be onto something to resolve for the next episode though thanks to some advice from another subscriber! Fingers crossed, as I really want to get it resolved. Trans was in the order of AUD18k.
??? how much would this kit cost to build it to your spec? ( I was planning to buy the 2022 Lotus Emira V6 Manual, but this kit would be a dream car also, just not sure I'd have time and space to build it before I'm to old)
I'm actually not too sure about that. You can chose left or right hand shifter location, but unless RHD is not registrable where you live, wouldn't you want to keep it RHD to stay authentic to the original vehicle?
@@BuiltbyDan Getting a car registered here is the US is easy. We don't have all the crazy regulations like Australia has, at least not yet. But with this crazy person we have in the WH now that could change. Safe drive-ability is more important to me than originality. Besides we drive on the correct side of the road here, lol.
It's a booklet and DVD with all the high resolution photos from the booklet. I'll look to include some footage of it in future episodes, maybe when I tackle something like the suspension.
Have just watched your Ep 01 and subbed, as you appear to be in Melbourne, have you ever checked out "Roaring 40's GT Replicas" down there, they, to my mind, make the most awesome GT 40 replicas, I would love to have one of them. I guess I will find out in future episodes which kit you have finished up with and am sorry I didn't see your channel way back when that I could give you that info on Roaring Forties ... good luck with the build, I will be watching with interest .... cheers
G'day Ian, I did look into Roaring Forties kit as well, but I liked the modern aluminium semi-monocoque chassis that Absolute Pace does. Thanks for the support!
G'day Rick, I have kept an eye on the market for quite some time, average examples typically get listed for around the $180k mark, but I wouldn't consider them to be the most sought after examples, prices go up from there.
@@BuiltbyDan thanks Dan. I was wondering too if there’s a market for building them for others. Seems a person could make a nice business doing it. Are there such 3-party people doing that?
@@BuiltbyDan I’m sure. I would only like to build one day. Was just thinking it might be a nice gig for a young talented guy to do. I mean, after building one, I bet the next one would be twice as easy. Anyway, I think it’s a great idea that you are doing a video documentary of your build - if you ever decide to sell the car some day, the buyer will appreciate it, and I think it greatly will increase the value of the car because prospective buyers will be confident you knew what you were doing and conscientious (rather than a hack job). Plus, you’re helping the rest of us before we jump into it ourselves to determine if we’re up to the task. Long way of saying thanks Dan!
Tail lights looked incorrect, they are Fiat ones, not sure the model off hand. Also look for a Lucas 608 mirror second hand, fitted to loads of cars of the period and OEM on GT40s.
Simca 1000 tail lights, made by SEV Marchal. I looked into them a couple of years ago and in France where I live they were fairly easy to find, sadly covid has stopped all the autojumbles. Lucas 608 interior mirrors seem to be getting crazy expensive lately, 200 euro was the only one I found after a whole 30 secs of googling.
I'll be looking into all options, but buying from the US typically doesn't work out too much cheaper by the time you factor in exchange rate, shipping, import tax (15%) and goods and services tax (10%). Australian Government loves their taxes!
Retired, cashed up, looking for a project. Bikes/cars/both. 100k, no problems. However, question: Anticipated on road costs in total. Engineers, drive train etc. I'm sure you have a balls to the wall budget upfront and have anticipated 99.9% of it. I can cop $100k. But not a couple. Why? Read somewhere kit car production is dead in Australia as compliancing and getting it engineered can cost absorbent amounts. One post inferred, a few hundred $k in engineering alone. So yeah, drive train costs & onroad/engineering? Also cost on return? Is there room for profit if built and sold on. Any market for new builds. Or a fear of future resale. Or if it can be sold(anyone would buy)? Sydney based? Guessing Melbourne. I might be able to lend a hand here or there. Paul Zernick on insta. Good luck.
Hi Paul, lots to cover here! Aiming for a total build budget of around $165k based on coyote engine and graziano transaxle. Regarding the few hundred $k in engineering, maybe for the manufacturer to undertake all the initial product development and engineering tests, if the manufacturer has done all that, the engineering costs for the builder are typical a few thousand. Cost on return depend if you want to factor in a cost for your time really, but there are some average examples that are registered on carsales around the $180k mark. I'd expect a well build and well spec'ed example to do much better. Feel free to reach out on my insta page if you'd like to discuss further _builtbydan
@@BuiltbyDan ah, so long as ya got your coin covered. Sounds like it👍 for me, I think the total might put the conservative side to pasture. Good to here the engineering isn't as bad as expected. Driveline has tapped me out. That box must have soaked up a bit😔 not ruling it out just yet but. Good luck. Need me a few more sq.m in brissy before I play mechanic.
100k Aussie Dollars.... that's 63k euro or 73k USD 🇺🇸 - before you take all the rest into consideration...... who said kitcars is an affordable option. ???
Looks really great ! Do you know Benjamin Workshop RU-vid channel ?? He's making a GT40 from scratch, including the CAD design ! Even though it's in french, you should have a look, I think you'll like it ;) Good luck and congrats judt for starting it, I'll be glad to see the following :)
Thanks for the in depth look at what you received in the pack. Definitely one of the coolest of unpack videos I've seen on YT. Although we're all excited to see the build process, what I have learned from other YTubers is the huge growth in skillset as you proceed through the build.
A little confused Dan. Built by Dan. Watching the videos was interesting, however, soon started to fall apart. An extensive garage make over, with enough not much thought for sufficient or proper lighting. Next, it was the lame installation of the casters that more than likely wouldn't support a hundred pounds or more. Mmmm. Later reading you have no experience, even preforming an oil change. A pattern develops. What makes you think you can "build" a car, even if its a kit? Good luck buddy.
Been saving this video for weekend viewing and was really worth the wait. Looks like a very impressive kit and looking forward to seeing it come together.
TBH I think halibrands look nicer on a GT40, especially if not going for the gulf livery. Powder coat the halibrands orange, will look just as nice with chrome knock offs and rims.
G'day Dan. Weird question: how tall are you? I sat in a brand new kit-built GT40 in Auckland some years ago, and my head touched the roof. I could not safely drive it. I'm 188cm (6'2"). Thanks from a happy subscriber.
A lot of kits do drop wells for the seats as an option, still at 5'14" you will still be a tight fit. I am 6' with long legs and only just fit comfortably in the one I tried. Not sure if it had dropped seat wells or not.
G'day Paul, I'm about 5'9". The seats that come with this kit have the sliders integrated into the seat profile to maintain a very low profile install. The manufacturers claims their chassis/ interior design suits people 6' plus.
Those components look like great quality. What kind of camera and wireless mic are you using? This is getting me excited to start my RCR build. The supply chain is a bit messed up. I have three chassis in front of me and GM has run out of camshafts. The motor won’t ship until the end of November. I don’t want to hear nagging about using a GM engine in a Ford! I am going with Frans configuration for the Ford vs Ferrari movie. LS3 and Porsche transaxle. Your Graziano is much more robust. I won’t be doing drag racing. But, it’s a road racer anyway.
G'day James, I'm using a Sony a7ii and Rode Wireless Go mic in this episode. Supply chain delays due to covid definitely affected my delivery timeframe as well. All in good time, it'll be worth the wait in the end!
Hey Dan, I have been anxiously waiting for the next instalment. Loved the way you explained the stages you bought and the upgrades. Would you in a future video show the details the assembly manual provides, do you get novice detail on fitting off the wiring loom. Is there expected welding during the assembly (eg. coolant pipes) and any machining that you have seen so far, excluding getting an exhaust fabricated? Do you know the process to go through for registration in Victoria? Sorry I have too many questions for you so will stop now.
G'day, no welding, the build manual lacks a lot of detail other than for the suspension install, I was a bit dissappointed about that, I expected it to be more detailed for all aspects of the build. No details provided on wiring, or any of the interior assembly. I'm currently working with an engineer to understand the finer details of registration, that might need to be saved for one of the final episodes, once I've actually been through the process. I think that covers most of your questions!
One other thing. This type of car will practically last forever - if there is no reliance on computer-controlled tech onboard. Is there any computer or computer modules, chips, etc in your spec, Dan?
