Tune in to this episode of Built by Dan to see the unboxing of my Ford Gen 3 Coyote engine for my Absolute Pace GT40 replica kit car.
I prepare my Gen 3 Coyote crate engine and Graziano transaxle in readiness for test fitting into the GT40 engine bay. I also attempt to install the engine and transaxle, but not everything goes to plan…

Yes, I too was surprised to find the sump full of oil 😄 A rotary burr with a die grinder should be able to sort out the excess aluminium to give clearance for the transaxle without removing the engine, just cover the engine to keep the swarf out.

DAN, mark with a Sharpie where you need to trim that left rear mounting tab, and any other modifications you've detected, and pull the engine. Reverse the intake, install the new - correct oil pan, do everything you think you need to do on the engine, and then mate the engine and gearbox for the next fit. I always mated the adapter and gearbox to a bare block to test fit/fabricate/modify and set the entire drivetrain, before I tried installing a complete engine. I'll send you an email..., there's too many individual things to write in the comment section. (You amazed me that you got the engine as far as you did with the oil pan in place).
@BuiltbyDan
@BuiltbyDan 2 года назад
Appreciate the advice, as always Carl. I'll keep an eye out for your email. Whilst I didn't film it, I did test fit the adapter plate to the transaxle prior to fitting the adapter to the engine, so I know both components bolt up to the adapter plate, will just be a matter of clearancing the chassis to get the transaxle to sit where it needs to.

Hi Dan, I couldn't help wincing as I watched you lower the motor in for the first time, I put a gen 1 in my GT Racing chassis. On the gen 1 the inlet plenum turns through 180 with minimal assistance from a dremel but I I'm not sure it's so easy on the later engines. I had to build a new oil pan to suit because the original is way to deep for ground clearance. I read someone else's comment about vendors trying out their stuff before they sell it and can confirm that you will buy lots of stuff that the seller will tell you "fit's straight on", you'll throw it away and design your own. You have incorrectly titled your video as a kit car build, you will likely by now be learning that there is not much kit about this build, it will take you way longer than you anticipated but stick with it, the rewards are phenomenal. I often found the best way to solve a problem was tea, tea will give you the time you need to think things through. Good luck.

Personally I would have went old school. I would have taken a 302 shorten the stroke, went with a completely forged rotating assembly new heads and went for torque lots of torque. Because the car is so light that is why. These cars were screamers back then and you can make them that way now. I've seen a lot of guys put these coyotes in cobras and I'm not sure if I would do that. Well I'm not doing that I'm putting a 460 in my Cobra so I guess that's just as ridiculous but anyway I can see you're having fun and that's the point!

Good job so far, use a grinder to clearance the transaxle with engine in situ, with a template. Getting the engine in and out is usually done with transaxle mounted which means the engine tilts backwards not forwards this allows it to swing at same angle as bulkhead slope. Might make it easier. Awesome work so far. It looks well. Thought about building an aluminium bodied replica from scratch myself.

just an idea, Al from the Skid Factory used a damp-sump oil system on his BBC Crown project. It gave him lots of room under the car. while a Damp-sump isn't nearly as complicated as a Dry-sump it will still beat a wet-sump when it comes to rounding tight corners on a track day. as far as your adapter plate goes just torque the m10 bolts to 45 ft lbs and use blue locktite you shouldn't need lock washers. GM doesn't use lock washers on transmission to bell housing bolts, on their 4L65, I only use blue locktite because I'm a scaredy cat.

@kululv
@kululv Год назад
Congratulations! Cool video, thanks. that Mustang flywheel is a monster anyway, so hopefully, you get a much lighter one! I was surprised that you even tried to lift the motor in with the oil pan and intake manifold installed. Why is it that you can't just reverse the original manifold? I would try. Also, give a little extra clearance around that front left trans mount because it can move in that bushing and hit and vibrate against the chassis! I would like to know what model number your Ryobi impact wrench is, it looks really big, bigger than the one I have. Btw: I think it's cool, that you stick with the good Ryobi tools instead of showing off Milwaukee or whatever! I still use some I bought practically 20 years ago and my batteries last 3-5 years and are still cheaper than the competition!
@BuiltbyDan
@BuiltbyDan Год назад
Reason for not using the Gen 3 intake is the big vacuum pumps for the CMCV would clash with the top tube of the rear firewall. due to other engine fittings and the shape of the underside of the intake, it also needs a spacer of approximately 16mm (from memory), which raised the intake and exaggerates the issue above. Front left trans mount has now been trimmed to provide more clearance. I've not had any issues with my Ryobi tools - at the end of the day, I'm just a DIYer, I don't required 'trade quality' tools for what I am doing. I'll have to get back to you on the model number!
@BuiltbyDan

yes but if you ask for help you don't have the satisfaction of saying you did it yourself. Besides, I've used a cheap harbor freight hoist to take a v8 connected to transaxle in and out of my kit car a thousand times myself, on rough concrete. Building something that requires pulling an engine in and out contantly, you're not going to always have a helper around. It's not like you have to lay underneath it and a helper isn't going to really be able do much but get in the way anyway..
