GT7 | '13 Volvo V40 T5 R-Design | Gran Turismo 7 Car Review

Despite having both a predisposition to liking Volvo's combined with fairly low expectations of what this car could be capable of, the V40 R-Design somehow managed to disappoint me overall. Its not slow, or necessarily bad in any particular way, but something about it just doesn't quite come together for me...
''The V40 was revealed at the 2012 Geneva show as a C-segment 5 door hatchback. Though it was positioned as Volvo's entry level model, the V40 would actually play a huge role in the Volvo catalogue as it served as the combined replacement for 3 different models; the conventional S40 saloon, the V50 family estate, and the sporty C30 3 door hatchback.
To create a car that could provide the comfort of a saloon, the utility of an estate and the youthful, sporty styling of a coupe, the car was developed completely from scratch.
While the base structure utilized a platform in common with Ford cars, the styling is innovative and has no trace of Volvo's conservative image of the past. Incorporating design cues from the classic P1800 of the 60s and its later 1800ES variant, the car has flowing lines and a soulful silhouette that can be interpreted as a coupe or an estate. The car was an immediate hit from its debut, attracting worldwide attention for both its aesthetics and utility, able to comfortably seat 4 adults along with their luggage.
The T5 R Design is the sportiest model of the series. Its 210.1 BHP 2L inline-5 turbocharged engine provides quick acceleration performance, and its sports suspension and 18 inch wheels provide both sharp handling and a smooth ride. The special front bumper and rear diffuser provide additional aerodynamic performance, as well as giving it a bold look.''

The V40 added to the game is the Japanese T5 trim, with the 2 liter engine and 210 hp and fwd. The rest of the world had a more powerful T5, with the 2.5 engine, around 250 hp and all wheel drive

I wasn’t expecting the turbo to sound so aggressive when I give it a stronger turbo.

I really like the performance of this car. Despite being front wheel drive, it handles very well. But after tunning it to take on the weekly challanges, I found out that when driven in the cockpit view ( having in mind that I play with speakers), it sounds like a very loud vacuum cleaner. On the rear view sounds good, but I just can't stand the noise in the interior camera. So I ended up selling the tuned car, bought another and kept it stock.

In my opinion, it’s not a bad car and it works well in some of the single player clubman club events. If the V40 has an engine swap in the future, an Audi TT five cylinder engine would work here since the V40 already comes with a five cylinder engine.

I‘ve worked for over 8 years on Volvo and honestly, I was surprised about the engine in the V40. When I first heard that it was going to be the V40 T-5 R-Design, I was expecting it to have the 2.4l Inline 5 engine (the one you mentioned, that was also in the Ford Focus RS). Surprisingly it was the 2.0l Inline 5 engine, which is completely new to me. I‘m sure if it was the 2.4l engine, it would feel a bit more sporty. And since the 2.4l engine was paired to an AWD system only, that would also help with acceleration. Overall I‘m very happy about the Volvo and the way it handles. It feels pretty much like a V40, and since I own an S60 T6 R-Design (in Rebel Blue), inside almost feels like driving my daily. Also, since it‘s the R-Design, it comes with a different suspension and brake setup, compared to the regular V40 models. But the difference between R-Design and Standard is pretty small and even with the „sport suspension“ from Volvo, it doesn‘t really feel that different. I really hope, they bring more Volvos in the future. Performance Models like the 850 T-5R, V70 R, S60 R and the 3.0l Inline 6 Models of the V60 Polestar and S60 Polestar. Having owned a Polestar, those cars are severely underrated in their performance. The S60 Polestar even held the Lap Record around the Nürburgring for a few years in it’s class (4 Door Sedan) before the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio took it‘s spot. Also the Sound of those models is on another level.

Mike, I had VERY low expectations for this car, thinking it would be a dog. If it weren't for it's presence in one of the weekly package's mandatory one-make races, I'd never have raced it. To my surprise, it's a wonderful car to drive. Really lively, great handling. Granted, I kitted it out with as many goodies as I could, but it was still a lovely thing to drive.

I personally think the V40 is charming. It drives average, but I got in with a sports exhaust and just think "that 5-cylinder engine is worth the experience". On race exhaust with anti-lag it sounds even better. Only thing missing about the experience is that the gearbox isn't sharp enough and I barely hear any downshift noise from the cockpit view. I like cars for the experience and not necessarily for the performance, and this Volvo delivers something unique in the game, at least until PD releases a 5 cylinder Audi roadcar like a TTRS.

but actually PD needs to add a 5 cylinder Audi or PD can have an engine for both gen TTS with the S1 Quattro Engine

It FEELS heavy even when the weight is dropped. However I attempted a C30 S2000 Polestar WTCC (~330hp/1159kg) build with this and it feels pretty good for a FWD car, a bit more understeer than I’d like but it’s much faster than my 240 Gr. A build. Pleasantly surprised by this

For me I found the car extremely fun. I fully upgraded it and gave it a BTCC look. It blew my expectations out of the water. With any ff car. I expected it to wheel spin a lot and under steer but no it had barely any of that issues and it handled so good that honestly it could fit well in gr.4 with the Mazda 3

The V40 was supposed to be in GT Sport from launch, though it was never added due to licensing issues. They likely scanned this car when it was brand new
