Gran Turismo 7 has built up quite a pattern of adding what I would call 'semi-returning vehicles', that is to say cars which old school GT players will immediately recognise, despite not actually being the versions which were included before. The 1993 Volvo 240 SE Wagon here being a prime example, since the last Volvo estate which we had in GT was of course the similar but different 240 GLT. Despite this one being slightly slower out of the box, its upgrades are a night and day improvement over the older non-premium model which we used to have...
''When the 240 was introduced in 1974, it featured a number of different body styles, including the "244" sedan, the "242" coupe and the "245" 5 door wagon. The last digit in these numerical designations denoted the number of doors of the model.
It wasn't until 1983 that these variants were consolidated into a single 240 model. The model was introduced with round headlights, but were replaced with the company's iconic square lamps in 1979. The exterior appearance of the 240 was timeless, remaining largely unchanged until production of the vehicle ended in 1993. But in terms of safety, it was always on the cutting-edge, with airbags and ABS offered as standard equipment. The Estate was extremely popular, making up one-third of the 240 sales mix in an era when sedans were the 'in' thing.
One of the most notable features of the 240 Estate was its styling. Its boxy exterior became its most distinguishable feature. It emphasized "safety" with its long overhangs, front and rear that incorporated ample crumble zones. This resulted in the car's characteristically long thin silhouette.
Like the exterior, the car's cabin was characterized by a simple yet functional design that defined cars made in Scandinavia at the time.
Although not particularly powerful, the engine was robust and capable. Ride quality was excellent, thanks to a well-tuned suspension system. Everything about the 240 Estate made drivers want to pack their bags and head out on an extended road trip to enjoy the countryside. It took quite some time until the 240 was recognized for its historical significance. It's rare for a car to retain such a following well after its production run had ended.
Say the word "estate" to European car enthusiasts, and they're bound to think of the Volvo 240 Estate. This station wagon made its debut in 1974 and enjoyed a long life, with a production run that stretched for two decades. Although it was discontinued more than thirty years ago, the model remains popular to this day. Built with the philosophy of form following function, the 240 provides excellent outward vision and superb handling. Some users have logged several hundred-thousand kilometres on their vehicles, so you can get it's a reliable machine. Sure, it may not be fast, but it's stylish and has plenty of luggage space, making it the ideal for extended road trips.''
