Most interesting to me is how just a few extra wattage increase or decrease creates such a massive difference in temperature. I'm not familiar with cooling systems and heat capacity but it's neat to see.
My first thought seeing the title is that it better perform well because that is an old game over 10 years old and the ROG ally is the latest tech in handhelds. Even if it is a handheld it should be able to easily play a 10+ year old game.
Please make more ROG Ally videos! Also silent mode is pretty useful just not as optimized as SD. You can play the entirety of Halo MCC at 60 fps on 9-10W on this though!
I believe the stutter is from connecting it to the video capture device you're using. Ally has VRR. But thats a display dependant technology. VRR would compensate for the stutters. For VRR you need VSync off.
You can add more to the armory crate menu like a resolution icon that switches between 1080 900 and 720p by tapping the icon like how the performance button works without having to change it in the game also you can create a custom profile and turn off the boost like make it 20w which is what I do
Oh that's pretty cool! Thanks for the tips, I already recorded cyberpunk on it for tomorrow before I saw this comment. But I'll definitely use the resolution toggle from now on! Nice!
Nice. I haven't plyed GTA on my Ally but I've completed the the first two Tomb Raider games on it from my Epic Games backlog and had a blast. I'm currently playing Atomic Heart on it and get really solid performance around 1080p medium. This little thing punches above its weight in most cases. My main use case is as a backlog device as it does really well in older titles performance wise. My rig has a 3080 10gb but I've honestly used my Ally more since I had it just for the convenience.
@@madhuparnabanerjee9067 Best Buy is where I got mine. One call out is the battery life isn't great so that's something to consider for heavy travel. The Steam Deck has much better battery life, but the trade-off is you could get 50% more performance or even greater on the Ally which I personally prefer. I use it mostly at home and I have multiple high wattage USBC cables throughout my place so it's a non-issue for me. But if you want to play for two to three hours at a time purely on battery, that's probably not going to be likely unless you travel with a 20,000 mah portable charger which I also have.
@@Iatecheetos I don't use the SD card slot so I can't speak for that part. I love mine. As I mentioned in my OP, I have a beast pc with a 3080 that can run pretty much all my games max graphics at 1080/1440P but just firing up the Ally is so convenient. You should go with the Steam Deck OLED just to be safe. I'm not sure how a PS5 is in the mix vs handheld devices as they are two different categories. I think a lot of us who get handheld gaming devices already have a main PC or console. If you don't already have a pc or console that can play next gen titles, I'd go with the PS5 first as you'll get an overall more immersive experience being that it's way more powerful.
The performance was better than this before the latest amd graphics driver that I updated. Hopefully the next one improves the performance in GTA 5. I got 80 to 120 fps at normal settings before
For me it was latest bios or 330/331/333/334. GPU kept going down to 800hz during gameplay causing stutters and fps drop especially in GTA V and IV. I'm on 323 and both games run beautiful even on 15w
great video, could you make a performance comparison video with the steam deck and rog ally in titles such as spiderman remastered, fortnite, call of duty mw3, starfield, etc (would love to see how a dual booted steam deck compares to the rog ally)
Glad I snatched up the Asus ROG Ally…….i love definitely love it, got Destiny 2 and Division 2…….need to get GTA 5 on it and I’ll be set……I will also have my gaming pc by Christmas
After the awful customer service ive had with asus on a few occasions i dont go near them anymore lol Couldn't imagine trying to claim warranty on the ally lol
Just got an open-box return copy for €370 from a retail bargainbin. (Yes, I double checked the EAN code = Z1 Extreme). Good to know I can cruise Los Santos while painting my toilet. I'm of trying that 54W system mod, because I'm stupid. Must do it before summer though
Even I don't understand than the CPU bottleneck. It's quite a bit better than Desktop Zen 3 as it's based on Zen 4. I reckon 30W is not enough for the whole APU. It's unable to reach 4.5Ghz single core (capable of 5.1Ghz single).
That screen tearing wouldn't be there on the ROG Ally either. I remember with xbox 360 and PC's of that era, screen tearing was so awful. but literally normal lol. Yay for my VRR displays. I have 3. One 120 hertz LG nanocelll 55 inch (TV). And 1 165 hertz KOOURI 27 inch 1440p monitor with adaptive sync. And of course the ROG ally 1080p 120 hertz screen. I love my VRR. The 2 big screens are both hooked up to my Ryzen 9 5900x and Rx 6800 gaming PC. It's awesome. I use the cheap 1440p one mainly to move things near to me so I can read them. as using Windows 11 on a living room TV (well studio flat) is not good on the eyes. But i do game on it sometimes No HDR though they lied. HDR does not seem to work well on my rig anyway. I put it on in windows and it looks worse lol. Looks more HDR with it off? Looks good when a game impliments it well though just windows is buggy with HDR. I always feel a bit silly hooking the ROG up to the 1440p monitor. It's awesome (at 1080p) but I may as well just use the PC at that point lol. Btw my 1440p monitors freesync range is 100 to 165 hertz is that normal or good? My other ones 48 to 120 hertz. is the 1440p one not great VRR or something? Hah I just changed it to 48 to 165 hertz in custom resolution utility. Yesss.
An interesting video. The Steam Deck and the Asus ROG Ally are good products in my opinion. I play on my PC but if I had to choose I would choose the Steam Deck because of its operating system and price.
I stopped playing desktop as handheld gaming is way more comfortable for me and gets me more into the games I play as I hold the game in my hand. If you get a handheld, get Deck OLED
definitely go for the ally or the legion go the deck still can’t play everything like games like destiny 2 and mw3 run at 30fps on the ally it’s much higher. Windows and play nite will allow you to play all your games in one place.
Iactually have an aftermarket rear panel and high quality thermal paste and now even when I overclock my rog ally it doesn't get any higher then 79°C I suspect with thermal paste it would be even better but I dont wanna risk my motherboard
is there a way to disable cores though? There's no reason to run more than 4 cores when playing something light or old, and disabling cores (or maybe HT?) may free some of that power headroom
@@zWORMzGaming oh, that sucks that Asus didnt respond. the xg mobile unleashes the ally's full potential as well as other laptop's potential like z13 and should be reviewed by more people like you if they want to make it popular to more people
I have a question. If you download the cracked version of gta 5 in rog windows 11, I assume the game will come with pc setup. Does the game can automatically detect the rog controller or I have to set it manually or I have to download another app?
Imagine Z1 Extreme 3D !??? Like for iGPU or CPU Edit : Looking at benchmark from GN, Jarrod's Tech at native 1080p 3D gives like from zen 2 to 3 performance
