Two Big Boys for 35 cars? That is the epitome of overkill. Big Boys were the most powerful steam locomotives ever built, they could easily pull 100 car train
It’s also like giving a small metal ball to the strongest man in the world and you’re telling him to throw it as hard as he could. That’s what this situation is like, right?
@@VeshremyEnjoyer Well, let's see one Big Boy is said to be capable of pulling a 15 mile long cargo freight train. A one mile freight train usually consists of 80 - 85 cars. So, 80 x 15 = 1,200 cars or so. So two Big Boys should be able to pull double that number. Like 1,400 freight cars. Damn...
It's a shame that this mod doesn't have the articulated front wheels (Wheels that move independently of the rest of the engine!) But overall, this mod really completes this railroad!
They sure did. And in early 2019, after 60 years in retirement, it was fully restored for excursion service to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Transcontinental Railroad/Golden Spike ceremony. :)👍
Great video, but did anyone notice that he kept saying "they used this to get the supplies to/from Pearl Harbor... Last I checked that was in Hawaii, how a train would get there doesn't make much sense to me. LOL, it reminded me of that one song peter and quagmire sing of family guy, "train on the water, boat on the track"LOL.
Epicburst I totally agree!!! I started volunteering at the Illinois Railway Museum and I get to work on there Steam Locomotive No.1630. They said when it's running season I'll probably get to ride in her cab :D
its not actually pearl harbor they used them for. it was for hauling heavy freight through Sherman hill. they went from Utah to Cheyenne and Laramie Wyoming.
The Big Boys were also designed to take on the steep grades of the Wasatch Mountains. In fact, the Big Boys were originally meant to be called Wasatches.
That exact Union Pacific 4-8-8-4 Big Boy #4014 is being restored to working condition in Cheyenne, WY at this moment. It should be up and running by 2019. It IS the biggest steam locomotive in the world!!
Its actually not the biggest steam locomotive in the world. There are longer and stronger steam locomotives however the 4-8-8-4 is the most successful of any.
Actually, the OP is right: 4-8-8-4 Big Boy is the largest steam locomotive in the world, followed by 4-6-6-4 Challenger and 2-10-0 Decapod. And at a weight of 625 tons, I'd like to know of any steam locomotives that saw regular service for more than 5 years, that wasn't military equipment or had a specialized use, because to my knowledge, there isn't an engine bigger than Big Boy.
Hopefully, if they release a new GTA game, they'll include Train missions, Police missions, Firefighter missions, Taxi missions, Trucker missions, Taxi missions, and Ambulance missions, like GTA San Andreas did.
The cab is accurate for an oil burner even, amazing. It has the atomiser controls on the left, and 3985 and 4014 have 2 drivers to run them, and generally 2 fireman as well under oil firing.
If you go into forms of Mechanical Engineering you will learn the mechanics of basic steam engines and trains. If you take history in school pertaining to Industry or WW2 you should learn somewhat of how trains helped win the war, at least I did in traditional High School (even though the majority of what I was taught I already knew ;) )
not even close. 80 on flat ground with moderate length train, just like the Challenger counterpart, but they rarely ever ran at full speed, that wasnt their purpose
I can't see very well, but is that a double heading dual Big Boys? Cuz this sounds and looks insanely badass. I mean, it was the biggest and most powerful locomotive made by UP to go up grades unbeatable even to Challenger without assistance, and here we have two Big Boys!
Thanks for doing this! Brought back fond memories of my Railroading Grandfather. Love The Hudson, Mikado, Allegheny and BigBoy Locomotives! Hope you do Bring the BigBoy back out in a 'good weather' video! :-)
This mod is absolutely amazing, its bit of a game changer actually! It opens up so many awesome ideas and possibilities in the relm of machinima making! Great Video!
I honestly find it hilarious you decided to do a double header with Big Boys, since the Big Boy was basically created so that you wouldn't have to do a double header with two smaller locomotives over certain sections of track.
Problems with locomotive: Locomotive’s wheels move a lot slower than they should be. Some wheels don’t move at all. Sounds aren’t right. Chuffs aren’t synced with the wheels. Some rods aren’t connected and some aren’t there at all.
+Poopsticle_256 not unrealistic though, remember the Union Pacific did this quite often to help balance out the need for power on either side of Sherman Hill.
Redneck Chevy I know, hell these things in ideal conditions could haul a 5 and a half mile long loaded freight on level track. That statement was more in reference to the point that Sherman Hill had more westbound traffic than eastbound, therefore they would double head them to reduce light locomotive moves over the hill.
Okay. Iges everyone is confused 1. No, the Big Boy is not running in California ONLY! 2. The Big Boy is actually being repaired in Cheyenne, Wyoming, and should be complete within the next year or so.
there where lots of other steam engines that are being restored too CP 2816, Francisco I hope they restored SP 4460 GS-6 so it can partner up with SP 4449 GS-4
My son loves trains and we have one of the original big boy trains at the local train museum in Scranton, PA. The horn honking long long short long, is actually a horn signal for crossings, human or car. One long means the train stopped and locked its breaks and two short horns means that the train started moving. Another fun fact about big boy in particular is that its too heavy for most standard train tracks so most tracks that are still operational arent tracks a big boy could travel on. You said in the description that they are restoring 4014 and you can actually follow their progress on their youtube channel. And another little fun fact, big boy has a little sister who's practically as big. Challenger is a 4-6-6-4 whereas, Big Boy is 4-8-8-4 like you mentioned.
@DoctorGTA Do you know when you'll release this Big Boy steam train mod privately in this video? And I really do like that train alot. I'd say I give it a thumbs up. 👍
Amazing detail on the big boy. Drivers don’t turn fast enough so it looks like it’s almost like sliding. But these things could top out out around 80 mph. And they still do double head it’s just not really popular anymore. But nice mod tho for the most part. Also the stack don’t put out a lot of smoke. If there was 35 cars behind you. Then one would’ve been easily able to pull that. 4014 just got restored fully last year and it is about to finish its 1 1/2 month race across the Midwest so it’s nice you chose 4014.
No it does not, to me anyways. The Big Boy shown in the video here is a 4-8-8-4 locomotive while the Polar Express is a 2-8-4 locomotive. The big boy is a much bigger locomotive.
i was looking forward to seeing how it turned but nope they had to be cheap on it . these engines were so long that the drivetrain had to be split into two sets of eight wheels with four sets of pistons rather than two. the forward most set of wheels and powered wheels would hinge away from the boiler around tight turns but the developers didn't make an animation for that. i am triggered
Johnnymack1234 I mean why would someone put the time into making this? Especially doctor gta which is a shitty RU-vidr. In fact why am I even here in the first place?
Yeah Kinda sad that the chuff wasn't even close, or that the wheels aren't going the right speed... I mean if people can make crazy mod vehicles with big tires and shit all over them, why not this?
If he says "honk the horn" for a steam engine one more time. Great mod, but if I might make a recommendation, the front and rear drive wheels ought not to be in the same position all the time. Example, front at any given time being up should mean the rear 8 drive wheels have their rods on the lower side of the wheel.
Calm down, he said "I am new to this train stuff" so cut him some slack, and also, I'm sure you don't know anything about steam locomotives or diesel engines.
