I'm going to show you a mashup of some different projects. I'm taking the dungeon blocks from DM Scotty and dungeon stackers (from Black Magic Craft) and merging them with Thingiverse user sablebadger's block files. I like sable badger's designs and takes on the blocks, and in this episode I'll show you a comparison of 3D printed blocks to the XPS foam blocks.

I was scrolling past the videos and saw the thumbnail... I said hey that looks like my stairs. :). I go by sable badger on thingiverse. Thanks for the mention, and glad you liked the models. I like what you came up with for the stackers. Nice work! Edited to add... I took your advice and I have been making a bunch of new stacker designs. Thanks for the nudge.

So after just going through and watching videos on occasion, I have to comment years after you post. If you paint your foam with a light layer for your base, you can then wait like 30 minutes and glue all your pieces without melting your foam with super glue and not deal with the wait and moving about when bumped after glueing. I get a lot more tiles done when crafting. I do have a 3-D printer and obviously don't use it for this. I love the look and detail of buildings, however with 3-D printing.

Do not just power off the printer. Power it on again so the fan can work. If you power it off, heat can creap up, past the heatbreak and melt filament in all the wrong places. :-) Edit: good comparation video. There is one thing you can do to save time, sleep while the printer works. With foam you can easily affect the result, cutting and hacking. I'm normally all about 3D printing, but foam is good too.

I posted some final photos of all the blocks painted and arranged to form a complex 3D dungeon area. You can check it out on my Game Terrain Engineering Facebook page here - facebook.com/groups/252832065563012/

Question: The proxxon makes the process easier and faster to a degree. How many do you think you could cut and put together by hand just using a knife and no proxxon in that same 3+ hrs it took to print the stacker block?

Good work there Sir! I'm at a disadvantage that I don't have access to either a 3D printer or the type of foan you use. I live in India, and many of these stuffs are either not available or crazy expensive(for people like me). But I love how people like you make it and I get to learn from it. Thank you! Also I was wondering if you could, in the next video, showcase the Colosseum type structure that's on the top shelf behind you on the right side of the frame.. maybe a quick build steps series of photos if you have. OR, if you can explain how to come up with the joint movement mechanism for the At-At walker. I intend to make one out of cardboard but the joint mechanism is something I've been trying to figure out for a while now. I'm not an Engineering or Arts student so I find some things a little hard to understand at first.. any way you could help will be awesome. Thankyou!

I'll try to remember to pull the Colosseum down and show some closeups in an upcoming video.

I use a LOT of these blocks. Almost weekly in a Frostgrave game, but often in D&D and sometimes for a few other skirmish wargames.

can I ask why you put 1/2 inch squares at the edges? do you glue walls on your blocks or something?
@jktechwriter
@jktechwriter 5 лет назад
It's just the way the grid worked out. I don't use walls.
@kenfox9577

Why didn't you scale up the prints to match your 4" squares? I usually try making things compatible because it's nice to mix and match stuff. You could print the top 3 steps for example and glue them to a 4" square to really cut down on print time. Your channel is great btw! I really like your ideas and techniques.

I printed them at the actual size sablebadger set them. I guess I could have bumped them up, but they're for use with Frostgrave so the lack of a grid and the smaller size doesn't bother me. I like your idea of printing top 3 steps BUT that will still take some time. I'd be willing to guess that the 3 top steps would take about 1 hour. I could crank out a dozen or two in foam in that time. Steps were the easiest of the 3 variants to make IMO.Thanks for the kind words about the channel.

Seems technology for the sake of it to me - the foam worked out perfectly fine, was done quicker and cost less in electricity alone. A camera to watch a printer seems like overkill too! I guess it’s up to people how they spend their money but I prefer the hands on approach any day

Trust me... having a camera on my 3D printer is a nice bit of insurance. But yeah, creating these with foam is definitely faster than 3D printing, but there are plenty of things my 3D printer can do that I can't recreate in foam or chipboard.

Hello, I noticed you were printing on your prusa, and not the ender 3. I looked through your blog was curious as to how the ender 3 was working out for you. I am not sure if you have covered the machine in any youtube videos or the blog. I would your opinion on the ender 3.
@jktechwriter
@jktechwriter 5 лет назад
I have one of the early versions of the Ender 3, before they made some changes related to the bearings beneath the printbed. I like the Ender 3, but after hours and hours of tinkering with it, I still don't have it printing at the quality level of my Prusa. I'm not disappointed... I took a chance and ordered it for $169 and it does work, but I just haven't had the time to sit down and really tune it (or try to tune it). Not giving up yet, but it isn't at a level where I'm using it much. The newer production version is much more solid according to my contacts, and Tom over at Fat Dragon Games swears by them and his Facebook page has a great sticky'd post with all sorts of advice and links for owners.

If you make more, you might want to reinforce the pieces with some toothpicks for pins where you glue the pieces together. The end result is a lot stronger...
@jktechwriter
@jktechwriter 5 лет назад
Yeah, but I've never had any breaks with the Tacky Glue... that stuff holds foam like nothing else.

What are the apps and devices that you use to control the camera and shut off power via your phone?
@jktechwriter

The camera is a baby monitor camera from 1st Safety. The power device is from Superconn although Belkin makes some good ones, too.

What is the difference in cost?
@jktechwriter
@jktechwriter 5 лет назад
That's a little harder to estimate. A roll of filament (1kg) is about $10-20. A 4x8 sheet of 1/2" foam here in Atlanta was $12. A 2x2' sheet of 1" foam was $5. I burned through the 1" but have way over half of the 4x8' sheet left. My best guess is maybe 8-12 of the blocks (the first one I made) from a roll... versus the almost 30 blocks made from $11 worth of foam.
