Great video. I love your channel. Just a note on acidifying fertilizers... I recently came across a fix for alkaline soil. In Calgary my soil has a ph of 7 to 8 with heavy clay and too short a growing season for elemental sulfur to be very effective. Ammonium sulfate, potassium sulfate, and epsom salt have turned everything around. Finally winning after years of losing. See "Great Tips on Fertilizing Blueberries For Improving Yields" by Get Growing with Gary Heilig for amounts and organic options. Thanks, Jeff!

Blueberries have perfect flowers, so they can self pollinate… but they’re not very good at it 😂😂😂 I kinda knew all that, but the way you led into it was kinda funny ❤ As far starting/replacing blueberry plants, would you say buying a plant from local nursery or starting from seed would be best?
@TheRipeTomatoFarms
@TheRipeTomatoFarms 2 месяца назад
Ha ha thanks Mcgritty! I'm normally all about the DIY and taking the long route, but when dealing with hybrids and the length of time to get an adult plant, I'd always either buy my blueberry plants or take cuttings in the spring to expand my current crops. Seeds just takes sooooo long! 🙂

Great video Jeff! You mentioned not bringing your blueberries in for the winter but I've been doing that with our 15gal grow bagged plants. Do you bring your growbags into a warmer area or just leave them out? Do you lose any due to sub-freezing temps?

Back in June we had a 2 week hot zone.. above 90 and I was out of town. When I left I had like 50 blueberries and when I got back they had all fell off and plant looked half dead.. plant is looking good now.. but no berries ever came back. Maybe next year

Been there so many times. Its that tiny window of time when the berries are 1/2 size and green......moisture is just mission critical at that stage. At least the plants are still good to go, so not a total loss! :-)

@TheRipeTomatoFarms
@TheRipeTomatoFarms 2 месяца назад
I have watched his stuff, love it. However, I've never seen anyone say that Blueberries love a neutral pH. This includes the three major blueberry farms in Saanich and Delta that I've visited. They all acidify their soil and for these guys, its their livelihood! I have seen blueberry plants thrive in higher pH's, for sure.....but not what I would call "max harvest". :-)

But the other 3 are in wicking tubs to control soil ph and they look like they are dying. I thought wicking tubs would be ok so the bush can take in what it needs.
