Lane Thomas' Grand Slam Lifts Guardians Past Tigers, Into ALCS Against Yankees
Lane Thomas' grand slam off Tarik Skubal propelled the Cleveland Guardians to a 7-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Saturday in Game 5 of the AL Division Series, sending the Guardians to the AL Championship Series to face the New York Yankees.
Cleveland and New York will renew their postseason rivalry in the ALCS, marking the seventh time the two teams have met in October. Their last clash came in 2022, when the Yankees won the ALDS in five games. Game 1 of this year's ALCS is set for Monday at Yankee Stadium.
Thomas, who racked up five RBI in the series-clinching win, came up big for a Guardians team that defied expectations all season. Not predicted to contend, Cleveland captured the AL Central title under first-year manager Stephen Vogt and now has a chance to end a World Series drought dating back to 1948.
"it's incredible. I've said this a lot over the last few weeks. It feels great, how they accepted me coming in here and trying to just keep this thing rolling. Obviously we've played well this first series, and we gotta keep it going for another couple."
