Heinrich Böll Stiftung Southeast Asia Regional Office went to Sungai Utik, nestled in the heart of West Kalimantan, Indonesia and talked with Bandi Anak Ragai known as Apai Janggut, Raymundus Remang, and Yulius Kelabo. They represent three generations of Dayak Iban 'Long House of Sungai Utik', the indigenous group who have consistently defended their lands against illegal logging, palm oil production, and corporate interests.
Throughout the conversations, Apai Janggut, Raymundus, and Yulius shared their ecological wisdom and indigenous knowledge about forest conservation and the relationship between humans and nature, emphasizing the possibility of valuing nature over wealth. Their message is clear: it is possible to sustain livelihood while protecting the forest, preserving their customary land, ancestral legacies, culture, and identity for future generations.
"Guardians of Sungai Utik" is a compelling testament to resilience, culture, and the unyielding spirit of the Dayak Iban. This documentary not only highlights their struggle but also celebrates their deep connection to the land and their hope for a sustainable future.
