If you're referring to the tag play on loftin, don't take your cues from the announcers - they absolutely didn't understand the rules involved. Personally I also think he could've been called safe, but not because the umpires were idiots. It was a close judgement call

I think he was safe but it’s not a joke. It didn’t affect the game and in a 162 game season it doesn’t matter at all. They are still human and thus will make mistakes

Exaggerate much? 😂. The call at third was 50/50. If they call him safe you can see why and if they call him out you can see why as well. It was not even close to as bad as you say.

I think it was the right call, the fielder has the basepath when fielding a ball, and you get 3 feet and it was close how much feet it was

He didn’t even go that far out. I’ve seen runners go further and not get called out

@@davidjames5448runner’s path allows for 3 feet from the tag, you could subjectively say that was more than 3 feet. Luckily this play didn’t matter for their outcome.

I can try to explain if you'd like! First, there's a difference between baseline and base path: Base line: the line between two bases. It is fixed and never changes. Base path: the line between a runner and the base, determined AT THE MOMENT the fielder receives the ball in order to make a tag. There is a 3-foot rule which states that a runner cannot deviate more than 3 feet from their base PATH when attempting to avoid a tag. So, you mentally draw a line between the runner and the base as soon as the fielder receives the ball, and then make sure that the runner doesn't go more than 3 feet away from that line. In short, you can definitely do a swim move to avoid a tag, as long as you don't go more than 3 feet out of your base path. The umpire in this case thought that the runner went more than 3 feet from that line and therefore called him out.

It's just weird that the NHL, NBA and NFL all post highlights about 30 mins after a game ends and MLB takes over 3 hours....just sayin...

MLB has to make a lot more highlights than the other leagues. And they are generally higher quality, blending all of the broadcasts into one video.

I'd recommend doing some research on the rules you're referencing before forming your opinions. First of all, defensive players commit obstruction, offensive players commit interference. Second, there is no way this play could be considered obstruction by the third baseman by any reading of the official MLB rules.

The ball arrived before the runner did.

Fielder has the right of way to field the ball. Runner has to give way. You learn that in little league.

@@jaydee4177it’s not obstruction but in that same thought he could’ve also ran jram over because as a fielder you’re fair game if your in the base path without the ball. This is the thing the mlb wants out of the game so they really should be giving leeway to players who are actively trying to avoid those collisions they hate so much. Or just let loftin take out jram like he used to be Able to do

@ctay7216 no, this is just simply inaccurate - you may be confusing this with the home plate situation pre-Buster Posey rule, where runners could level catchers who were waiting to catch an incoming throw. After the rule change, if the catcher blocks home plate before having possession of the ball, the runner will be called safe (so there's no need to try running the catcher over). On the rest of the base paths, however, it's long been the rule that the fielder has the right of way when in the act of fielding the ball, and the batter must avoid them to not be called out for obstruction. If you want evidence, this happened literally last week to Juan Soto in a Yankees-Orioles game: Soto was running from second to third, accidentally clipped the third baseman who was coming in to field the ground ball, and was promptly called out for obstruction. If Loftin had run Jram over while Jram was fielding the ball, he would've been called out instantly.
