I wish we had our passing out parade at Pirbright filmd but unfortunately it wasn't the done thing back in 1979 . I've still got the passing out program. Blue red blue around the edge. I Remember the Caterham company CSM D. White Scots Guards . He was absolutely fabulous as a person and brilliant at encouraging you to get it right . He taught me how to slow March by taking me to one side. Sadly I believe he was killed in the Falklands war but I will never forget him . R.I.P CSM D.White . SCOTS GUARDS.
I grow weary of piss stained BAOR heroes slagging off today’s soldiers. The last twenty years have been a relentless cycle of operations; you lot did NI (been there done that), the Falklands, which was a one off for two battalions and the Gulf for two battalions (did that one too). I started my career in BAOR and wasn’t impressed by the army of functional alcoholics who worked four days a week and swamped mattresses the rest of the time. Fast forward to later years, and the Catterick trained guardsmen I served beside were more intelligent and more resilient than the tick tock drones produced by the bullying of the Guards Depot. All you lot moan about is drill standards; that means shag all in an operational unit. If you’ve got time to waste doing drill outside of the depot, then you’ve got time to organise ranges, cadre courses, upgrade courses or adventure training. We haven’t formed square to receive cavalry since about 1854; the old way are dead fellas.

Colin Atkinson he was my company sergeant major Caterham company, I babysat for him a couple of times when I was a crow, good bloke. I passed out November 1986.
