As a Canadian that’s travelled abroad and met people from all over the world, nobody has a fucking clue what we sound like. When I was in Panama with my dad, we met a lovely older English couple at the resort bar. Drinks a plenty, chatting away, and out of the blue they asked us “are you guys from Scotland?”… On our way back to BC/Alberta we had a 48 hour layover in Vegas and the first night we figured we’d go see a show and a hypnotist was performing so we went to the ticket booth to get some tickets. Talking to the ticket booth lady and she asked us “are you guys from Ireland?”… So the English think we’re Scottish, and the Americans think we’re Irish, but I have Scottish and Irish friends and they would never guess us for one of their own. I’ll say it again, nobody has any fucking clue what we Canucks actually sound like. And people say we sound like Americans..😂 Funny, I can travel a couple hours across the border from Alberta to Montana and there’s a distinct and noticeable difference. We do not sound the same. Plus, if we did, the Yanks wouldn’t mistake us for Irish. The proof is in the -pudding- maple syrup eh.

I’m from NZ and constantly got asked if I’m from South Africa when I was in England/Ireland/Europe. Not now I live in australia though lol.

Not as much as Alex sucks at accents however, wish he'd had a go! Him trying to be a cowboy on the podcast is hands down my favourite TM podcast moment 😂

It's also really hard to get the voice in just 1 word from a standing start, even if you're generally pretty good at accents.

Frankie Boyle has one of the strongest yet easily understandable Scottish accents ever and Irish (at times) is not too far off. He definitely had to hold back on his own accent a bit to get that Irish accent down

I really don't get offended easily at all, but I'm honestly getting a bit sick of how incredibly poorly people imitate us. I mean, at this point it's kinda ridiculous. The amount of times where international tv or movies has portrayed our language even remotely correctly, that I've seen, I can count on one hand. Not even using all the fingers.. I kinda get it, because it IS a hard language to learn, and us Nordics do have a completely different melody than other places, but if they aim for the most mainstream dialect, they should be able to do a better job than this. (Not bashing her and specifically, but people and actors in general. She just triggered me a bit 😂😅) Most often I can find it funny though. But the fact that you get shocked when someone actually manages to imitate the melody is damn right laughable 😅

I think he was specifically trying to do an impression of Mae, because they're Canadian. Either that or his idea was an American accent but more North = higher up = higher pitched.

He's from Glasgow, which has Irish roots. He didn't have to search far for this accent.

​​@@vice.nor.virtueUhm, dude, the person who wrote this comment is actually Swedish 😅 That really isn't "basically the generic Scandinavian accent", but I can get how people who don't speak any of those languages can hear some minor similarities. But the thing is, that our accents has been so poorly portrayed in international entertainment for so long that people outside of the Nordic think that thats actually how we sound, when it really isn't. The accent media uses for especially us Swedes, is pretty much a Dutch or Schweiz accent, NOT Nordic. We have some things in common with the Dutch because our languages stems from the same tree, but for the most part it's just not the same at all. It is a hard language to learn though, so I kinda get it, and it can be funny too. But it's gotten to a point where it actually starts to feel kinda disrespectful. Sorry for the rant, but I'm tired and your comment triggered me a bit 😅 Also sidenote just because I know these things aren't really taught that great in school. Heck, Im from Sweden and I had to google some of this myself 😅 But Scandinavia is only three countries: Denmark, Norway and Sweden. The Nordic is five countries: Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Iceland and Finland. It also includes the three independent islands Åland, the Faroe islands and Greenland.

As a swede, you don't get a say because your biased by region. Your going to looking at more details, outsiders are looking at more generic things, as they deal with it less so serious the nuance
