Can you do a follow up video with a dog that isn't so calm?

one of the biggest mistakes I made with a past dog was to not do this. It got so bad I would have to isolate my dog ina room alone when guests came over for safety. Now I know better and learned from this mistake. I love the bed method and love the way you present it.

I hear you! I’ve made mistakes too, and would do differently now with access to such wonderful methods. But you did your best with where you were and what you knew at the time. I’m sure you had great love and plenty of great times. Please be gentle with yourself. He would want that for you. Sorry if too sappy. 🤷‍♀️ I’m working on this too.

We had a neighbor come to door and inside. Everything went beautifully. These tools and your instruction is changing our lives! We’ve utilized barking at window, door method, walking with head halter, and recall “go get method” ALL are exceptional methods with results. Many thanks!🙏

I don't have a gig. I watch these videos to learn how to deal with other people's out-of-control dogs. From my observation, most dogs do exactly as they please and believe that their owners yelling, "No!" over and over is just a normal part of the soundscape.

Thank you for your videos, Joel!! Your instruction has helped us and our dog immensely! We did the exercises in this particular video for barking at guests. We have a 3yr old, 80# mixed breed. Last night when we got to point of ringing doorbell, our dog went nuts barking loudly and continuously (as he does) but he did go to his place with continued direction. (No one at door yet) it was hard for him to calm down. He continued barking and growling. When he sat and calmed a bit I went to get a carrot, he stayed and calmed down and quiet, then I gave him the carrot still in his place. Tonight we did the exercise again and he was so much better 😲. Progress not perfection. But an interesting part for me is that I ignored his barking in place this time as long as he didn’t get off the pet cot, and he stopped barking more quickly. Just diffused on his own. I only cared about him staying. (I thought about this from your video with Aussie Blaze on leash reactivity - to let him “get it out a little”.) So, I am learning and my dog Happy is learning and I am simply and gratefully amazed. We also added talking to my husband thru door and he is less and less reactive. We will keep practicing. Sincerely, Thank you!! ❤️ And for other owners- this is working! Just practice and give your dog a chance to figure it out with your direction. All the best to you!! It CAN get better -Really! 👍

Day 3- 10 minutes -loud barking with doorbell trigger. No barking during voices thru door or me coming inside. Still reiterating and reinforcing stay command. A few “Uh Ohs” and Staying treats. Release and Meeting the dog treat. 👍

Day 6 - still practicing - but it’s getting easier and more fun. My dog is realizing what he’s supposed to do and I’m getting better at what I’m supposed to do 🤣 He still barks initially with door bell but calms down in his place and will even lay down and “smile”. We’re getting this! Thanks Joel!!

@@arielepouhe80 - Hi! Well I just tested him out because we haven’t done this particular exercise in a while. He barked when I rang the doorbell, and I went through the steps again and he did pretty good. Out of 3 tries he broke the stay once when I opened the door. But not the next two times. He barked the first time but not the 2nd two times. He remembers the exercise and I think he likes the training. We don’t have company often, but when it is people he knows he imay bark at first but calms quickly and doesn’t rush them or the door. It still takes a bit for him to stop barking if it’s someone he doesn’t know which is rare. How is your dog doing with this guests coming over (bed/stay) method? We are still working with our dogs reactivity with passing other dogs on walk. And him barking at random people when we’re out with him. But not every stranger 🤷‍♀️ we just keep doing best we can. He’s doing great with Beckman’s recall command “come” using his “go get them” method.👍And better at window barking with “I see it” method.

@@caw4791 Awesome! That's great to hear I was just curious. I don't have a dog yet, but have been reading and watching videos because my fiancee and I may get one in the next 6 months or so, as we're moving into a bigger place that allows dogs. Never had dogs growing up, so I want to make sure I familiarize myself with training and techniques before that happens so we don't ruin it's life. Was also curious about real people's thoughts on advice that emphasizes positive and negative feedback for dogs versus just mostly positive. So that's why I figured I'd ask you since you commented on implementing this video's advice for your dog. I also just finished reading yesterday the "Place" chapter of Michele Welton's "Respect Training for Adult Dogs". Which has a lot of positive reviews, but also one or two negative reviews I read that just makes me antsy about making sure that real people are having success with these types of techniques.

Ginger did great even when you said ok multiple times speaking in general, not directly to Ginger as her release word. She only got up one time when she heard ok. This is why I teach a different release word to my students. Even my hard core obedience people have switched it to okie dokie - you're only saying that to the dog, not to people in every day conversation.

I have two huskies. I follow all your trainings. Your leash method worked perfect on my dog, as well as many other things. One of my last things it’s actually keeping them calm when guests arrive. They always super crazy the first 5 to 10 minutes. How old do you think the dogs should be to teach them the bed stay? I have one months old female and 1,5 male.

I have had the nuttiest cocker spaniel puppy for 10 months now and making good progress using Joels methods for many unwanted dog behaviours. At one year old do you think she has the mature enough brain to be able to control herself when new people come to the house? If so, I will start this training immediately 😂

I used to get frustrated with this guy but I was struggling so every dog trainer was my enemy . I've watched nothing but balanced dog trainers and then I started watching forced free dog trainers it wasn't helping. I kinda take a little bit from what I have learnt and just keep on going and it's paying off but I always watch this trainer because he really explains things and I need that and I enjoy seeing his methods. Consistent and trying to help people understand.

When is it ok to release the dog? I've started using this method with my dog. Sometimes I can read that she's super excited and not under control even though she's still on the bed. Is it ok for me to keep my dog on the bed for 5 or 10 minutes while she calms down and I talk to my guest?

Does he stay when you knock or ring doorbell even if no one there? Open and close door? Could you go out and come back in and direct him back to place? Do you have someone whose willing to wait for you to get him back to place? Or go back out and come back in and try again? Just a couple ideas. Good luck!

ok so my girlfriends dog looks like ginger, but she is way more hyper when people visit- gf already taught her to go to her bed when people visit, but the problem now is if the guest stays and sits on the sofa with a coffee or goes and chats with the missus in the kitchen or whatever, as soon as given the release cue its like a starting pistol for the dog. so instead of her being nutty at the door she's moved the hyper behaviour to other parts of the flat. she clambers across the sofa and uses the guest as a climbing frame, She'll be laid/ sat seemingly calm till the cue then her tail wags so hard & fast her entire back end swings with it and her nose sniffs so frantically she could give herself whiplash as she darts towards the guest or to where the guest had been, I know in general my lass needs to work on reinforcing calm behaviour with her but what could be done to remove the starting pistol mentality from the dog so when she's released she can calmly get up from the bed and approach/ investigate the guest?
@ChurchFarmer
@ChurchFarmer 2 года назад
I would say put her on a leash and correct her like in his leash pulling videos. You can also not release her from the bed, there is nothing wrong with having her on the bed until she shows real calm signs (head down, slower breathing, no panting, etc).

@pmlm1571
@pmlm1571 2 года назад
Just my two cents: I bet Joel would do some version or refinement of what Cesar Milan showed years ago as "dog whisperer." You claim whatever the dog is claiming. You do it without touch, talk or eye contact, by standing big and tall and slowly moving into the dog's space and eventually standing over the food bowl or whatever, while the dog, after objecting, eventually surrenders it to you and turns away. A mind game.

We have to crate my Shepherd. He bites the guests! Nips at the clothes, but gets skin in there. He’s territorial and also resource guards his people. He’s much better with women. He knows place, but gets too agitated and breaks it if a strange man would enter. So, we crate him and he’s really chill in his crate.
@pmlm1571

@@lillieberger2883 If you bring this up because you'd prefer your dog to be "chill" with all guests, men and women, have you viewed Beckman's videos on resource guarding and people aggressive dogs? I think things could be even better for your dog and you...
