We need lots more of these. Having had a Q4 for 6 months I find the amount of charging locations ok but having 1 or 2 50kwh chargers per location (sometimes less) is useless. A location needs at least 4+ chargers to be viable. Corley, Rugby, Beaconsfield services are doing it right 🙌🏻

Every time I've used a Shell Garage either the charger doesn't work or the max speed I got was sub 40kw - Yes my car has pre-heating to the destination, which I used, and I was around 18% SOC on Arrival, and no there was no one else sharing etc.. so I should have gotten 125kw+ So far totally unimpressed with my Shell experience .... also pre-electrical shortage I was shocked at the cost they charge, and it wouldn't shock me if now it's 60p+ per kw. (April 4th 2022) Shell are defiantly on my "only if I'm desperate" list.

@Yanquetino

This will prove helpful for potential EV buyers who worry about where and how to charge. I will say, however, that these 3rd-party charging outfits really need to get their act together so that plugging in, charging, and paying is as seamless as filling a gas tank at any fuel station, no matter the brand. So far, those steps are complicated, necessitating special fobs, cards, apps, pre-paid accounts, sometimes the equipment has broken down, and most of them still only offer 50kW speeds. EV buyers: be aware that there is room for improvement, dust off your patience, and remember that you'll be driving a better, cheaper, cleaner car despite those occasional frustrations.
@hughmarcus1
@hughmarcus1 2 года назад
It won’t be cheaper if you’re only using those fast chargers. Latest comparisons using those show that it costs as much to run an EV as an economic diesel. Unless you’re able to charge at home or work at a discounted rate then it’s not actually that much cheaper to run an EV.
@Yanquetino
@Yanquetino 2 года назад
@@hughmarcus1 That depends on the pricing from different charging companies, and "cheaper" doesn't only refer to fuel, but also maintenance. Over time, EVs come out ahead, not only in costs, but also in emissions.

With EV's you can assume that 90%+ of your charging will be done at home (if you have off street parking), so you will be leaving each day with a full charge and returning home and plugging in, most people will not need to visit sites like these unless they are doing an extra long journey, at that point you will probably be pulling in to take a break and top up anyway. you cant treat charging an EV the same as filling an ICE car.
@Brian-om2hh

Which is why many EV owners charge at home through the night. Sure it takes longer, but you won't need your car while you sleep. It's also the cheapest time to do it....

1. Find the 0800 number on the blue sticker just underneath the screen. Call the number. 2. Explain to the operator that the charger is providing less than 50kW and that you have a warm battery and no faults with your car. 3. When the operator explains that they cannot see any faults with the unit, ask them to reset it. 4. Wait… 5. Explain to new arrivals what is going on. 6. Consider going to a different charger if you have enough range/correct RFID card(s)/ Apps/time… 7. If reset, plug in and watch charger provide the same output kW as before. 8. Go to Shell Recharge App and click the ‘notify issue’ button. 9. Return some days or weeks later to find the same issue.

I charged ar the Shell station in Etruria near to Hanley Stoke On Trent and it was the easiest charge I've ever made. There are four bays and on arrival, the charger indicated to connect to my car. I waved my Octopus card at the indicated place below the screen an hey presto the charger started ifs process telling me what it was doing every step of the way. To finish the charge I just pressed the button on the charger, no problem. Non of the confusion I've had at other chargers. The down side is there are so few of these multi charger Shell setups across the country. This site does not even show up on Zap Map. And in the near future when the goverment had trapped us all to change over we will be paying road tax or somekind of extra tax as well as the electricity hike as the UK and people will have all there eggs in one basket meaning we have no choice but to use electricity at sill costs as well as huge issues if areas have power looses .it's all exciting now but that will die. There’s also a pre-registration fee when paying via credit card. At the moment, that’s running at £27. So Shell add £27 to the bill before charging the vehicle. You get the £27 back if the card is valid but it’ll take a few weeks to be returned to your bank account. Meanwhile, Shell is earning interest on the pre-registration fees and you won’t be. But if the charge fails or is interrupted; each additional attempt at charging, will incur an additional £27 pre-registration fee. If it takes you three attempts to gain an actual charge, it’ll cost you £81 extra, that Shell will keep for weeks and earn interest on. Sure you’ll get the £27 or multiples thereof back… eventually. But Shell keeps the interest and you’re down every time this happens.

John 3:16-21 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God. Mark 1.15 15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.

Too slow. 350kW should be standard. And min 800V battery charging tech. 1200V would be better. German Autobild made 130km/h range test and only 2(!!!!) cars made real life 400km mark. Most couldn't even get 300km on a single charge!!! And that's an absolute NO GO for a single family car

I reckon after the initial pay-out for said car, charging at say Shell or BP would last me a whole month in winter but in summer half that - where as £22 buys me half a tank of unleaded fuel giving me a range of 380 miles which can last me roughly the same.

Add on the cost of VED, exhaust replacement, higher annual servicing costs for filters, oil, brakes, congestion charges coming soon in many cities and towns etc. Reflect on TCO. Total Cost of Ownership. Not the comparison of cost of energy used per mile.

@@smc812 Correct Steve, more like 38.8mpg on a good run but then I always refuel at half a tank and as it is a 1ltr eco-boost, turbo Fiesta, it still does not bad mileage per litre - hence why I am resistant to get rid of it in favour of an EV.

175 kw is good charging speed. Not sure we really need 350 kw charging.

Except that 350kW charging should come hand in hand with better cell technology. That will also mean higher cell/pack energy density, so smaller packs, lighter cars, more efficiency, etc.

Hmmmm, you don’t mention the sky high prices at Costa which is conveniently on site? I’ll embrace electrification when the infrastructure is established. Until then, no thanks.

We need more cheap 7kw where we can park overnight or for the day. Let's target motorway services with 100 x 7kw chargers, 20 x 50kw chargers and then 10 x 100kw+ units. You'll get 30 miles on the 7kw units in about 1 hour. Many other vehicles are currently capped at 50kw. Many peeps don't need to even get to 80%. Let's leave the chargers for those that need them. Charge accordingly. The more expensive faster units should charge more. Hubs make sense. Community solutions are required for villages but councils still have not woken up to the gold mine they're sitting on. My slogan is Park and charge, do something else. I never wait at a charger unless I'm waiting for someone at the location.

7kW chargers only make sense in places that don't have time limits. Motorway service stations usually have a 90 minute or 2 hour time limit before you're handed an overstay fine.
@HairyCheese

@@q3b26 I know what you're saying, but 30 miles in 1hr can be a choice to the next charger or perhaps even home. They're cheap and they're for overflow.

If you're on a motorway you're trying to get somewhere quickly, even home. Hell is being stuck in motorway services where the only charger is 7kW, or some fast chargers hidden out of sight, or inaccessible, or long queue, or unsafe because you have to back into the caharger in the exit road. We need proper provision at motorway services, without greenwashing and wasting more money on a poor coffee. 7kW chargers have their place on the street or car park for a prolonged stay.
@HairyCheese

@@CW-om2qq , ok but many peeps blocking 150kw+ chargers with their slow charging vehicles is going to make people wait. Even at Braintree, Gridserve has a mix of many chargers so you can charge appropriately. 7kw chargers are cheap to put in for many reasons. Imagine putting in 10 x 150kw chargers but limited by the slowest point or the local connection. Everyone drawing less than 150kw is inefficient. It's like plugging a USB1.1 device into a USB3. Plug the keyboard into the USB1.1, plug the hdmi adapter into the USB3. Do it the other way around and the keyboard is ok but you'll not be using the monitor.. Seeing hybrids sucking 3kw from any charger is diabolical unless it's at their home. Perhaps it's time to have a time+kw charge on all units. Stop peeps with slow charging vehicles blocking up chargers? I've taken over 200kw.ony.Tesla, my Leaf has peaked at 38kw. Taking 30 miles onboard is about the same.at 7kw for both. But I'm wasting a charger if it's over 50kw.

I can fill my truck up in 5 min range 650 km. I do 100,000 km in a year. What is the life expectancy of an electric car in km range. An electric truck is also way more expensive. My ram truck with cummins Diesel engine can go a million miles before it needs to be serviced. Till electric vehicles prove to be this reliable i’m going to stay far away from them.
