I actually took a detour right before the Senbon Torii and hiked up the side road that is full of tombstones right up to the summit. Then I headed down to finish it. It is a great alternative since you avoid all the stairs up!

Smart! I usually come down this way... Not as crowded either. Thanks for leaving this tip, I hope others read it.

It's actually also a great tip for shopping in stores with no escalators. I saved my legs during a full day out in Akihabara.

Another top not notch video Andrew! If I was without the kids, I'd go for the top. With the kids... I think that's a no go :-) I've been to Kyoto a few times and have never been to Fushimi Inari Taisha, but thanks to your vid, I'll be sure to see it next time. Keep up the awesome work!

I am young and enjoy exercise so I went to the top, and it was a nice hike, although much less crowded, few kids and seniors up there, also maybe more sparsely decorated. Still, worth going since that is probably your main stop that day.

Sometime also I cannot decide whether to go all the way to the top of the mountain or not... because it would be a lot of work. Whole mountain is not only good walking course for strengthening my legs and lower back but also it is holy place where the deities living in the nature and humans can all be together as one. So It is worth climbing up holy mountain to make me feel refreshed and renewed.

This was my absolute favourite place in Kyoto (possibly even Japan) although I'm kinda sad we didn't reach the top, it was getting darker and starting to rain before we even got halfway so we decided to turn back but if I ever go back I'm definitely hiking to the top!
@HappyInJapan
@HappyInJapan 8 лет назад
+Cateaclysmic Ya, it's a tough trade off, because if you only have a few days in Kyoto it's hard to spend an extra few hours in one spot. It's a nice walk, but I wouldn't regret not going all the way to the top. My first two times to Fushimi Inari I didn't even go half-way up. :-P
@PandoraDaFoxx

I never made it all the way to the top. But I do have a funny/embarrassing story: I got all the way up to the Yotsutsuji Intersection, then decided to turn back around (I'm not in the best shape). So I went down what I thought was the exit... It turns out it was a side path that went AROUND the mountain (or at least it felt like it), and I wound up in a suburb completely lost! I found my way back onto a path, with help from some locals, and climbed up the steepest path I had ever climbed in my life. I eventually began to hear voices in the distance, and I began to pass people. I thought I was finally nearing the main shrine at the bottom (yes, I know I said I was climbing up, don't ask how I came to this conclusion, I don't even know now). With a final push, I made it back, sweaty and exhausted... back at Yotsutsuji Intersection... Yeah, I went back to my hotel immediately afterward and played my Switch. My feet hurt and I had no energy left lol. I'm glad I went, though. Seeing all of those small Shinto shrines sprinkled throughout the paths was utterly breathtaking. I had completely forgotten they were there (I've seen almost all of your videos), and it was an amazing surprise when I found them. 9/10, would visit again... after I get better shoes to climb in.

+Happy In Japan IF I live long enough to inherit I will. It is one of the only paper Gohonzon that was made into a wooden object by the Soka Gakkai like at Temples. And since they excommunicated the entire organization, twice in 1991. I won't be making a pilgrimage to TaiSeki-ji unless the entire priesthood admits what it did and there is some kind of reconciliation. Look up the former Head Temple Sho Hondo that could seat 5000 at once. The outside and inside was amazing! It was said to be a modernist image of a Crane taking flight. The Crane is the symbol of the Nichiren Shoshu Priesthood. The then mad High Priest had it, and every other building the Soka Gakkai donated since the 50's destroyed.

Wow! I just recently discovered you (I think maybe via gimmeabreakman) and I must say: I am totally amazed. The quality, the editing, the graphics everything is just beautiful. Are you a professional filmmaker? At the same time it is also really informative and you are a great host. But what amazed me the most was the atmosphere that you captured in your video. It touched me really and the title Happy in Japan really suits your videos. It is a refreshing new point of view of Japan. I think that the jvlogging community became really boring when you look at the "successful" jvloggers and I hope that youtuber like you will get a bigger audience! So please keep up your amazing work!
@HappyInJapan
@HappyInJapan 8 лет назад
+UnArtig Thanks for the kind words! I went to school for photography and graphic design and have made a living for the past several years making all sorts of marketing materials... but not sure I would call myself a "professional filmmaker." I wouldn't know what to do on a real move set or anything. I think most of the difference between the top jvloggers you might be referring to and me is that they produce several videos each week. I'm always impressed how prolific they are while still maintaining a decent quality level. My videos takes between 7 to 12 full work days to make (planning, shooting, and editing all added up). I can see how it is difficult to produce pro-level content regularly unless you hire people to help you. Anyway, thanks so much for the comment! Glad to meet you. ~Andrew

+See Gritti I think we're both talking about the same clip (hyperlapse at 3:17 ?). That was actually a series of still photos taken in increments all the way through the tunnel, then stabilized in After Effects. Walk this long I wouldn't be able to use a handheld gimbal without getting a lot sway and drift. By using hi-res stills, It allowed my to stabilize in post easier and then crop the best 1920x1080 rectangle I could find.
@chillinkansai

I've visited 伏見稲荷大社 twice and I'd say that going to the top all depends on your plans. If you can make the time I would highly recommend going all the way to the top, you can get some great views, eat some great food along the way and plus doesn't it just feel good to reach the top of any mountain? However if you have other activities planned in 京都 on the same day or your time in the city is short then it might be alright just snapping a few pics and then leaving.

Fantastic video! Fushimi Inari Taisha is in my Top 3 favourite places of Japan. My two tips for visitors would be. Be at the Yotsutsuji intersection for views of the sunset. Each time I've been the sunsets have been beautiful. Visit early just after sunrise. This is the perfect time to get a selfie with the torii gates as there is hardly anyone around. And there is just something mystical about walking around the shrine grounds at this time of the day.

Your videos are so beautiful, they always make me teary! I been using them to convince my boyfriend to visit places that he's not really interested in. We have a very tight schedule and he thinks that just one day in Kyoto will do, but I know that I need at least 2. He doesn't care much for Fushimi Inari Taisha, but after this vid, he'll HAVE to! Does it take all day to get to the top? More than half a day? Thank you!

I didn't go all the way to the top coz I was rushing to go to as many places as possible... Now I wish I took more time to enjoy this place.

Visited there back in May this year and only made it to Yotsutsuji Intersection because it was way to hot already... but the view was well worth it. And we found a cute cat strolling between the graves :)

+Where's Stu Also, crazy is that at this moment you and I have exactly the same sub count (not really, I'm 11sub behind you). Cheers to the 10.47k club!

Nice video. Having been there going to the top felt less important to me having seen plenty of shrines by then but at least I can say I went to the top. The green tea ice cream at the 2nd shrine stop (With a view over the city) was pretty awesome.
